Here’s what gaper hunter says about what a gaper is:

What are these people thinking? Do they actually look at themselves in the mirror and think their kit is tight?!? Jester hats? Fake dreads? Gaper gaps the size of Texas, with the sauce from a mid-day hot wing adventure still staining the area around their mouths.

And a decent definition thanks to urban dictionary of a gaper:

A gaper is a skier or snowboarder who is completely clueless. Usually distinguished by their bright colored clothes and a gaper gap, the gap between the goggles and a helmet/hat. Gaper’s also do the “Gaper Tuck” which is an attempt at being a ski racer by tucking, however it is done incorrectly with the poles sticking straight up like thunderbolts and lightning, very very frightening.

Hunting gapers…signs I look for:

-A one-piece or ski/snowboard outfit that does not keep them warm or dry.
-Gaper Gap
-Arms flailing with ski poles swinging all over the place.
-A fanny pack in use.

The Gaper Hunt Point System:

-Gaper Gap: 15 Points
-Gaper Helmets or Hats: 5 Points
-One Piece (in one color): 10 Points
-One Piece (in multi-colors): 25 Point
-One Piece (in what looks like a blob of abstract art): 75 Points
-Fanny Pack (non-matching the one-piece): 50 Points
-Fanny Pack (matching the one-piece): 100 Points

I never had to worry about gaper’s back in Washington…but when I came to Colorado all of a sudden it was incredible the amount of gaper’s you can hunt. I took my camera on the mountain was because of these fantastic gaper hunting shots I got. I mean seriously most of these pictures were taken in one day at Steamboat and there’s many more I missed.

Be on the lookout this upcoming winter for the 2007-2008 Gaper hunt…because I’m sure it’ll be of epic proportions.
