The 25 year old Snowboarder named Shay

Today I turned a ripe age of 25 years old.

Living in a resort town means that birthdays are celebrated not with families but with friends you’ve made. Two years ago I moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Back in Washington I would always spend birthdays with family and since moving here, I’ve found that my friends have become my family.

It’s quite amazing that one town and one sport will bring people together from different places. I’ve found that my closest friends here in Steamboat come from such a range of locations: Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Colorado, New Jersey, Minnesota, New York and my best friend comes from Germany.

This upcoming 08-09 season will be my 14th season on the mountain and my 3rd season in Steamboat Springs. I am very lucky to live where I live, to be happy and have friends that share the same passion as I do.

Happy belated. I sure hope you’re right about the whole friends turning into family thing. I’m tight with my fam, but I’m going to move to a mountain town sooner or later. I’m glad you’re enjoying your time in Steamboat.

    Hey Halley,

Awesome on your potential move to the mountains. Definitely it took a while, I only knew 2 people when I moved here. But with jobs, sports, and generally putting yourself out there…you find people who are fun to hang out with. I now spend holidays with friends and I’ve found that I enjoy that a lot. Most of my close friends here I found through summer sport teams or introduced through work events or just snowboarding and met each other.
