June Mountain 1/1/12

It felt really good to start 2012 on the slopes. Snowboarding makes me happy. It might not have been powder or a ton of terrain, but sometimes it can be one run doing something you love to make it matter. I hope everyone else enjoyed a good start to 2012. This time of year means new boots, specifically 12-13 Vans Boots to test out. Last year I got on board with their wear test to offer feedback (like I had with th...

June Mountain 12/30/11

Hard to believe the year is coming to an end but at the same time 2012 means unlimited possibilities for the future. Friday on the snow meant heading over to June Mountain to avoid the crowds and have a run practically to myself. Luckily for me, the June park crew was out riding so I didn't have to ride alone. The one run open is Mambo but it's in great condition for snow. It's soft, easy to ride and isn't bumped ou...

Mammoth 12/27/11

Snow matters. Good snow conditions can help bring out skiers and snowboarders while bad conditions can mean finding other things to do instead of skiing/riding. I got back yesterday into town with a clear drive over Yosemite which is insane that there is no snow on that pass right now. I knew what to expect today: lift lines, manmade snow and a higher injury of collisions because of packed people on slim runs. Aft...

June Mountain 12/21/11

After the madness at Mammoth yesterday, I opted to take a 15 minute drive down to the highway to June Mountain. Termed "California's best kept secret," it really is a hidden gem of a mountain. Last season I had my best powder days at June, so deep and never tracked out so you had endless runs to yourself. This year June's been working hard to make snow and get the mountain up and running, they only opened last weeken...

Mammoth 12/20/11

The good news? The mountain is open. The bad news? Holiday crowds are riding limited terrain and manmade snow conditions. Today we headed up together for laps but stuck to South Park to ride the park. It's frustrating because I'd love to ride other stuff but there's really nothing open other than parks and riding outside of parks in my opinion is a recipe for injury. There are so many people on the limited runs that ...

Mammoth 12/19/11

Exactly one year ago today, I was riding over three feet of snow and this year I'm riding manmade snow with really sketchy conditions. It's pretty crazy the variety of seasons that can come to Mammoth. I've been out of town the last couple days to spend time with family and came back to a busy Mammoth Mountain. Kicked off the shoes and put on the boots at chair 4 to avoid the crowds. Instead of walking on snow to ge...

Park City Mountain Resort 12/11/11

In my opinion, Park City Mountain Resort has it all. You have amazing parks with tons of jumps and features built to perfection, tons of acreage for freeriders to play on and a vibe that makes you feel welcome and want to come back for more. Plus you can also get a Cobradog. It was a long drive back to Cali from Colorado but a stop at PCMR was definitely worth it. We stayed in Sandy at the Gandee household before cru...

Grand Prix Copper: Men's & Women's Superpipe Finals

A couple weeks ago I was watching Copper put the finishing touch on their always perfect Superpipe and now I"m seeing the best riders in the world completely dominant it. Today was the Grand Prix Superpipe Finals at Copper Mountain in Colorado. The best pipe riders throwing down for their chance at winning cash, getting points and proving their skills in the stunt ditch. In previous years at Grand Prix, the weather h...

Keystone 12/9/11

It feels great to be back in Colorado. It's well worth the drive from California for a ton of events going on, seeing friends and better conditions. Today we headed to Keystone to get in some early morning laps before the Grand Prix at Copper in the afternoon. The snow conditions had good coverage, parks were filled with skiers and riders jam packed to hit every feature possible and the mountain was busy but you stil...

Canyons 12/8/11

A detour can lead to many great things. Today's detour included a morning stop at the Canyons Resort in Utah to get our fix of skiing and snowboarding. The best part of today was the resort to ourselves, soft snow groomers and fun turns with friends. We woke up in Park City and headed to the Canyons, parked and took the people mover to the base, then the gondola up to the slopes. The mountain coverage is great for th...
