Tailgate Alaska: Splitboarding Thompson Pass 4/2/12

It took a while for splitboarding to get kicked into full gear but now that I'm in Alaska it's finally happening. It's the cheapest way up the mountain and a great way to explore around the mountain. I ended up heading out with Tony, Peter and Jordan for a morning trek to the ice cave. It was a good warm-up for Alaska splitboarding. Myself on the skin up. A huge thanks to my grandma Sue for investing in my future, s...

Snowboarding with 907 Snowcat 3/30/12

It's been an incredible season of firsts. First Baker Banked Slalom, first heli, first backcountry turns in Alaska and now my first cat day of snowboarding. When I first arrived in Valdez, I met Nate from 907 snowcat and decided that a day of cat boarding would be a great way to start the Tailgate AK experience. I ended up joining in with a really great group of snowboarders from Alaska and Sweden. We had seven of us...

Thompson Pass 3/29/12

After spending the last couple days exploring Valdez, it was finally time to head up to Thompson Pass and get the full scale of Alaska mountains. I headed up bright and early with my gear to see what work needed to be done and ended up getting in a couple laps to warm-up for this adventure. During Tailgate BC, Nico was telling me about Alaska and how your whole season is basically practice for AK. That everything ...

Stevens Pass 3/16/12

It's been a stormy week for the Northwest. Lots of rain in town and snow in the mountains. Stevens Pass has been getting snowfall that kept delivering powder days on the mountain. I waited for Erik to start the day on the slopes we could carpool up together. Even by the time we arrived in the early afternoon, there was still powder in spots and turns to be made. The best part about Friday snowboarding was the sun ca...

Stevens Pass 3/14/12

It was great to arrive back in Washington to fresh snow falling from the sky. The Northwest has certainly been the place for snowfall this year and it's still coming down! I took yesterday off for a much needed down day and hoped that today would still deliver the snowfall. It did, the snow was still great on the mountain and offered up powder turns throughout most of the day. I got picked up by Jason, we met at t...

Flow Tailgate BC Day 4: Eagle Pass Heliskiing!

To say I was excited to win a day of Eagle Pass Heliskiing was an understatement. It was a dream come true and I was so excited, so stoked and so ready for my first experience on a heli. Despite all the anticipation, I made sure to get a good night's sleep to prepare myself for today. I was nervous about it, but didn't let nerves take over. I wanted this experience to be amazing and it definitely delivered despite so...

Flow Tailgate BC Day 1

After weeks of anticipation, Tailgate BC has finally arrived in Revelstoke, British Columbia. The next five days offer up a party in the parking lot mixed with a range of snow sports from the backcountry to the resort. We arrived late last night into Revelstoke and woke up bright and early to get a feel for the surrounding mountains. It's pretty incredible to be part of the first Tailgate BC. It's a cool concept to ...

AAI Avalanche 1 Course - Day 3

The third day with the American Alpine Institute (and second day on snow) meant taking all the education, on-snow practices and really applying it to our experience in the backcountry. It was focused on us enjoying the snow while remaining safe and watching for terrain that could be avalanche prone. We had made a trip plan on Saturday to explore farther out in the backcountry but at our morning meeting, we discuss...

AAI Avalanche 1 Course - Day 2

As soon as I got confirmation that I would be heading up to BC and AK this year, I knew it was time to take the avalanche level I course. I checked out a couple options for course providers in the NW and eventually found the American Alpine Institute out of Bellingham and Mt Baker. I signed up and paid my fees so I could finally get a better understanding and more practice in the backcountry. The first day was Fri...

Stevens Pass 3/1/12

If you're wondering what mountain has been getting hammered this season, I can tell you Stevens Pass has been getting the goods. The snowbanks are high, the coverage is amazing and today was another powder day. Despite the backside not being open (due to avy danger), the front of the mountain and especially the trees offered up some really fun riding for the day. I was pretty stoked to get out on the mountain with m...
