Snowboarding

Northstar 1/10/12

With no new snow in California and the roads clear to explore, it meant heading up to Northstar for a couple days to get in riding time. I was really stoked because it meant being able to hang out with the Shreddy Times crew when we got off the mountain. I made the drive from Mammoth to Northstar in the morning just in time to meet my friend Ashley on the slopes for a day of shred. Conditions since the last time I...

Mammoth 1/7/12

It's the second day of the Burton demo tour, so today meant an early start to make the most of the mountain with the early groomed conditions. The crowds have died down from the holidays so most of the day wasn't too busy in the Chair 6 lift line. My camera battery died early in the day so most of the photos were taken on my iphone. Demo collage photo [singlepic id=12834 w=500 h=500 float=] The demo tent kept busy...

Mammoth 1/6/12

It's a good time of year when the Burton demo tour rolls into town. It means getting on the snow to try out a bunch of gear in three days. Today was busy in the tents as the masses came up to try out the 2012 gear and get a feel for what Burton offers. It was an interesting day to demo on the icy, hardpacked snow and get a good feel for the board handling. While in line for demos, I heard from the girl working the t...

Heavenly 1/4/12

With the lack of snow in Mammoth, it was an easy decision to visit my friend Ashley at Heavenly for two days of riding. Tahoe seems to be better off with snow coverage and snowmaking capabilities so you don't get too much impact damage on the mountain. It's been a couple years since I've visited Heavenly but it's always been a memorable mountain. The views of Lake Tahoe while riding is quite heavenly and you can ride...

June Mountain 1/3/12

The vibe at June Mountain has always been great. It's a mountain that is full of good times. I finally talked the skier into joining me for a June day despite the park not being insanely huge right now. We ended up having a great day on the slopes, working on tricks in the mini park. He worked on spins and I worked on hitting more features. The skier and myself on the J1 lift [singlepic id=12787 w=500 h=281 float=]...

Mammoth 1/2/12

Most of the holiday crowds have taken off so the mountain is almost back to normal for January. We headed up a little early in the morning to get the most of the conditions. It was the first time in a week that I was finally able to check out how the mountain conditions are holding up and the lack of snow is starting to show. You could see dirt in spots and there were a lot more rocks on the mountain. The jumps were...

June Mountain 1/1/12

It felt really good to start 2012 on the slopes. Snowboarding makes me happy. It might not have been powder or a ton of terrain, but sometimes it can be one run doing something you love to make it matter. I hope everyone else enjoyed a good start to 2012. This time of year means new boots, specifically 12-13 Vans Boots to test out. Last year I got on board with their wear test to offer feedback (like I had with th...

June Mountain 12/30/11

Hard to believe the year is coming to an end but at the same time 2012 means unlimited possibilities for the future. Friday on the snow meant heading over to June Mountain to avoid the crowds and have a run practically to myself. Luckily for me, the June park crew was out riding so I didn't have to ride alone. The one run open is Mambo but it's in great condition for snow. It's soft, easy to ride and isn't bumped ou...

Mammoth 12/27/11

Snow matters. Good snow conditions can help bring out skiers and snowboarders while bad conditions can mean finding other things to do instead of skiing/riding. I got back yesterday into town with a clear drive over Yosemite which is insane that there is no snow on that pass right now. I knew what to expect today: lift lines, manmade snow and a higher injury of collisions because of packed people on slim runs. Aft...

June Mountain 12/21/11

After the madness at Mammoth yesterday, I opted to take a 15 minute drive down to the highway to June Mountain. Termed "California's best kept secret," it really is a hidden gem of a mountain. Last season I had my best powder days at June, so deep and never tracked out so you had endless runs to yourself. This year June's been working hard to make snow and get the mountain up and running, they only opened last weeken...
