Ask Shay

  1. Hi Shayboarder, what’s the easiest way to find a product or when it might be released?
  2. Hey Shayboarder, I’m a little skeptical about reverse camber technology since I don’t see anything wrong with the regular cambered boards I’ve been riding for years. What’s your take on reverse cambers to regular cambers?
  3. Hey Shayboarder, I really like your reviews. Would it be possible to put them on our snowboard site/forum?
  4. How long have you been blogging and do you make any money off your blog?
  5. I’m coming to Steamboat Springs to visit and would love to meet up with you. Are you able to ride/meet up?
  6. Hey Shay, I’m getting into snowboarding and finally ready to pick up my own setup.
  7. Who do you ride for?
  8. I just got a Never Summer Premier F1 and there's a label "factory waxed" on it - So do I have to wax it again by myself or not?
  9. Hey Shay, why’d you trade in your Union Contacts?
  10. Sup shay? Congrats on the new site. I've written before and read reviews of yours to get ideas about product that I am considering. Specifically, this past season I purchased a barely used Bataleon Riot and fell in love with it for the same reasons you did. The person I bought it from said they had spoke with you as well about Bataleon. It showed me that your opinion is valued and it's no wonder the industry looks to you for testing/reviewing. You basically sold me as well others gear based on you honest and comprehensive reviews. I'd consider myself seasoned veteran that know quality from crap and it's difficult to find info that cuts through the crap/hype. Anyways, I was wondering if you would ever consider using your readers opinions in some shape or form? I hate forums for all the knuckleheads they attract but maybe there is another way of creating a resource with reviews/opinions for minds that think alike. Just a thought. Keep up the good work. -Jared
  11. Shay- I've been following your blog for almost a year now and am pretty blown away by the volume and quality of your content. I was wondering what your day job is that allows you get so much great work done on your website.
  12. Hey Shay, I've seen your shayboarder die cut stickers. Where and how do I get those?
  13. Hi shay just wondering if you know if vans is having the kento jacket this year or a pro shell. I sent my last years kento back for warranty and just wondering what to expect. Any ideas. Thanks and pray for winter to come soon. Tony
  14. hey shay, its zag from the sierra forum. I was wondering if you could hook me up with steves email address (the one who painted your A-frames). 18. Hi Shay, First off, I really like this website btw. Question: I know you say you have a love/hate relationship with th nana..But you own the pickle right? The pickle is supposed to be the nana with the different sidecut...and a tad stiffer so I heard... Right now,, I want to buy one of them, however I have not ridden either. What in your opinion is the best option? Please note, I will be riding this all around the mountain as well as the park... Also, your thoughts on the TRICE C2 BTX?? Thanks, Bobby
  19. Hello Shay! i've been riding for 2 seasons now looking for a new board. have looked at the skate banana but like you said it is easy to ride and won't push me to the next level. i do like the 2010 dark series. i do like to freeride but do want to start to get into the parks and start to freestyle sooner or later. is the dark series a good board for me?
  20. hello shay! I'm a little bit undecided because of my next board. i stand between the "lib tech phoenix lando 09/10 157 w" and the "lib tech phoenix jaimie lynn 09/10 157 w". You tested the 08/09 versions of these boards and according to your review the lando is a little bit stiffer than the jaimie lynn. The 09/10 versions of these two boards have at a size of 157 w the same flex (6,5) so logically they should have the same stiffness now. now my question is: what differences have these boards? i ride the flux titan rk bindings which are very soft so if the boards would have different flexes i would take the softer one. but now with equal flex i would prefer the lando because the graphics look a lot better. so maybe you can give me some more informations about the two boards. thanks a lot and best regards from germany daniel
  21. Hey Shay, I'm wondering if you have been able to test out the new Burton Joystick at all. I'm thinking of picking this up, but I'm looking for a 'real' review first!
  22. hey shay i was wondering if you know if there will still be snow at 4th of July bowl in September 5?
  23. Hi Shay, what're your thoughts on beginners learning to ride on reverse camber boards? I've got a cheap buddy and a burton hero, figured that's better then putting him on my anthem when next season starts
  24. heyy shay..i was wondering if you or going to test the 2010 horrorscope? im considering picking one up, but im not sure if it will be able to handle the hole mountain and not just park
  25. Hi there, Shay, do you know something about the Option Snowboards' insolvency? Is it true?
  26. hey shay i was wondering if as a girl with size 7.5 boots if i could ride a ns circuit 148 or 151? i weigh 150 and im 5'8" so im too big for the pandora at 146 but im worried the circuit will be too wide. Any thoughts? Also if the circuit will work should i get a 148 or 151? I already have a rome blue 155 to slay the mountain and a want a solid park board to compliment it. Thanks!
  27. Hey Shay, I'm looking to buy the Roxy Envi from last year. I ride at Stevens Pass, had my first full season last year since middle school! I picked it up fast and it's a borderline obsession now. I want a board that can handle ice, pow and anything the northwest gives us. I'm 5'7 150lbs and looking at the 157. What do you think of this board? Is it to aggressive? I want to be challenged and will be riding ALOT this year but don't want to set myself up with a board that will kick my butt. Any feedback is greatly appreciated! -Katerina
  28. ok so i bought the 2010 forces in green and on the bottom of the highback, where in is u-shaped, there is like a little peice like crushed in, almost as if it would look if it got nicked, i returned them and got a new pair and the same thing is wrong with them, do u think this is just common, does your forces have this mark???
  29. Hi Shay- I'm trying locate the women's bonfire boots. Would you recommend them? Do you know if they'll be sold online or in stores only and when do they release? All the board shops here in Minneapolis have never heard of bonfire boots....!
  30. Has your blog received enough attention from the snowboarding industry that companies are sending you free stuff to review and write about?
  31. Hi Shay, I'm a chick who's been riding off and on for the last 13 years or so. Just got back into it with a fury last season and am now looking to replace my beat up old burton with something more suited to my skill level. I consider myself a high intermediate, love cruising the mountain, trees, general freestyle; never got into the park too much, but am still looking for something with some pop to it. I ride mainly in the NE USA, but am heading to CO this January, so I'm looking for something that offers high control in all conditions (especially ice). I'm 5'8", about 145lbs. Looking at the Roxy envi, Rome blue, and the Gnu b-nice (all 151-ish). Any advice you can offer would be great! -- Jodie
  32. hey shay! just gotta say you run an awesome blog! lots of research/test riding and a massive input from your reviews had firmly led me to wanting a NS SL-R. now the age old question as their website is lacking in info - which size?!! i'd say my riding style sounds pretty much like yours - lots of shredding, some flatland tricks and occasional venture onto rails (often leading to bruising and a dented ego!). generally just having fun on the groomers and in the trees but with the option to try anything. i'm 200lbs, 6'4" with size 11 feet. 158 for a more playful ride or 161 for a stable blast? i'm wanting the 158 to work but have bought too short boards in the past and don't want to make the same mistake! many thanks for your opinion and keep those reviews coming!
  33. I've talked to quite a few people, but I'm still not sure. I'm looking for a new reverse camber/rocker board. I'm favoring the never summer legacy or revolver, but also like the lib tech/gnu stuff. These two companies have the sidecut technology which help you hold your edge. Do you have a personal opinion about which is the best all mountain rocker board out there? I'd say average day I ride 60-70 percent all mountain, the rest terrain park. I'm mostly looking for an all mountain board that will slash any given day anywhere, but give better performance in pow than a camber board. Thanks shay.
  34. Hey shay. Great site! I've been doing a lot of research lately and am trying to find a good board for pow & backcountry that still functions well as an all mountain board. I currently ride a Smokin Vixen 08-09 148. I'm 5'5 135 so it's a bit small but I ride mostly southeast which is relatively icy, groomed so its fun, playful & easy to control there. I love it! However, I'm going to Jackson Hole this winter & doing some backcountry so I'll need a bigger board to hold up in the POW and whatnot & that will ultimately push my skills as well. I'd say I am about an intermediate advanced rider. Ideally for $$ reason I'd like a 08-09. Can you recommend anything? Thanks!
  35. Hey shay, My gf wants to buy the Union trilogy bindings and mount them on my old Burton Custom board (with the triangle mounting pattern). Do you think that setup will work? BTW do you have a recommendation for bindings (she wears size 9 Thirty-Two Lashed boots). Thanks!
  36. Hey Shay. I was wondering if you had any inside info on resort deals for lift tickets and season passes that you could post up? By the way I love the blog!
  37. Yo Shay. I found it. My question is What is better at the end of the day of riding? PBR tall boy or Jack & 7 haha see you soon
  38. I see you've ridden a lot of Bataleon and Never Summer boards. Do you like the Bataleon TBT style or the Never Summer Vario RC style of boards more ? Also, whats your comparison of them in general ?
  39. so im sure you have heard all the hype about YES. snowboards i just picked one up at the board room in boise( well its on layaway) but any ways just curious if you have had a chance to ride one and what your thoughts are on it P.s. Im the guy who asked you if the highway house was still standing last winter, also if you get a chance to come up to grand targhee or jackson hit me up and we should go shred. Stefan
  40. Hi Shay. Quick question. I am stuck between two boards. The evo_r and the park pickle. I ride mostly park with a few powder days and icy nights. Which would you choose? Thanks
  41. Hello from sunny San Diego. It is time to purchase new boots now, I got about 100 days of riding on them in the last 3 years or so. I am a die hard fan of DC but I like the new 2010 Thirty two's. If you know anything from you or your friends about the Thirty two "Ulralights" or the Team- Two's that would be great. Thanks a lot
  42. Shay, i didnt see the reverse camber K2www in your reviews. have you heard anything about it? i'm looking at the 2009 model, cause this years is outta my price range. Thanks. Love your site! hope to see you at loveland saturday!
  43. Hi, I'm about to buy the Ecopop and can't decide on what size. I'm 5,4, and 133lbs. I'm used to riding a 153 but have been told to go for 148. Just don't want to slow down in the powder. What do you think? 148 or 152??
  44. Hey Shay, Sorry to ask a question about last years boards, but a budget is a budget. I am getting conflicting info on the 08-09 Infinity. Some say they are all RC and some say that NS also produced some camber boards...If I see an 09 Infinity for sale do I need to call and ask if its RC. Or can I just assume so...buy it...and shred? Thanks. P.S. Love the site, and thanks for getting my wife and I into NS boards, they are incredible.
  45. What type of wax do you recommend?
  46. Hey shay, you said you rode the lipstick in your easy living v rocker review. Any chance you can put a review of the lipstick up? My sister is seriously looking at it, and id love to hear what you have to say about it.
  47. Have you heard anything about a brand of goggles called Siberia? I can't find any information about the various models?
  48. What camera do you use for your videos and pictures? Love the site, Rey
  49. How bout an updated review on the Malolo. I see you have riden it in some deeper snow ... give us the verdict in the deep Pow!!
  50. Hi Shay. Your website should be commended - there aren't many sites out there that provide women-specific snowboarding information and reviews. Thanks a lot for your effort. My question is: have you ever tried ThirtyTwo boots, and in particular, what do you think of the Focus Boa and the Lock Boa?
  51. Hi there please help i have just started snowboarding and am wondering what board to buy. I am female 5.7 inches and weigh around 133 pounds. I am looking for a board for mountain and easy to turn and flexible please help what should i get. Ps i want one i can learn jumps air etc easy on.
  52. Hiya!! Im looking to get a new all mountain snowboard. I have been snowboarding a few seasons and I am confident on European blue and most red runs and have now started attempting jumps and tricks. I am torn between the K2 Ecopop and Ride Compact, which would you recommend? I am also confused about what board size to get as I am chick, roughly weighting 65 kg and 162 cm tall. I have riden boards that vary from a 143 to 150 cm and am not sure what board length to go for?
  53. hey shay, I'm wondering how the ashbury and airblaster goggles will fit compared to anon figments. I have figments right now and the have a gap in the nose which drives me crazy.
  54. Hey Shay. Thanks for your website. It's great and very informational. I am getting a new board and I was wondering if you could help me out with the sizing. I'm looking at a do-it-all board and from recommendations, I think I have decided on the YES board. I am 5-10 and about 180-190 lbs. I'm looking to do a little bit of everything (park, backcountry, freeride, powder, etc). I am torn between the 156.5 and the 159. What would you recommend? Thank you so much!
  55. Hi Shay, My friend turned me on to NeverSummer and your review on the ladies Lotus has me convinced that what i want. I've been riding an older board, not a woman's 157cm. It was a gift, but I believe now that's too long for me. I was told for my height and weight 5'6" 170 that i should be on a 151-153cm. Is that right? Is size determined by weight and not length of board to your chin? Thanks!
  56. Shay, Just learning to board this season. I am making progress each time out, but continue to battle getting off the lift. Any tips or thoughts? TIA
  57. shay, if you had a choice to buy either omatic extr-eco bs or never summer evo-r board, which one would you buy?? i'm currently riding 09's gnu d.kass btx board..
  58. hey shay. can you review the nike zoom force 1 boot? and let me know what you think of it?
  59. Hey so my brother is learning to ride and i heard that the skate banana is supposed to be really easy to learn on because its easy to turn and is very forgiving. i was just wondering what your opinion on this is. Thanks
  60. Do you know anything about the 2011 burton camber board de ja vu flying V? How does it ride? Its suppose to be able to hold an edge but still soft enough to press and pop. Anyone had the chance to check that out yet?
  61. Hi Shay. What board is a good all around beginner snowboard I haven't figured out what style I will be doing so I want to explore all of them. Should I get a Never Summer snowboard, I read your review of the Lotus and it sounds great. Any suggestions on other snowboards to look into would be great.
  62. Hi Shay. Since you own the Union Force, maybe you can help me with size since I'm a female with boot size 7.5 and I ride a 145 Gnu B-Street. Will the M/L size fit what I have? It's kind of hard to tell from your pictures but any help from you is appreciated. Thanks.

  1. Hi Shayboarder, what’s the easiest way to find a product or when it might be released?

I always check www.froogle.com to get a good idea of what shops have what products that I’m specifically looking for. It’s google’s search engine for products and does a good job of tracking them down.

  2. Hey Shayboarder, I’m a little skeptical about reverse camber technology since I don’t see anything wrong with the regular cambered boards I’ve been riding for years. What’s your take on reverse cambers to regular cambers?

It’s been a couple years now of reverse camber so it’s becoming more and more normal with regular camber. Companies have really adapted the technology to give their own input on it and the switch from regular camber boards to reverse cambers by model has been without glitches. I ride both, right now spending more time on reverse cambers but I still appreciate and enjoy riding regular camber. It really depends on your riding style and what you want out a board. Some people will always prefer regular camber but reverse camber is definitely making waves.

  3. Hey Shayboarder, I really like your reviews. Would it be possible to put them on our snowboard site/forum?

Thanks! I appreciate when people love my content, but it’s always respectful to link back to shayboarder.com so I get credit for it. If you plan to use all my reviews, please only put the partial review on your site and link back for the full review on my site.

  4. How long have you been blogging and do you make any money off your blog?

I started shayboarder.com in August 2007. I decided that in the first year of blogging, I would work on getting content and an audience versus making money from a snowboarder’s blog. With the launch of the new shayboarder.com, I’ll feature ads and can make income from the blog. My rewards are being able to try new products from companies and the people I meet.

  5. I’m coming to Steamboat Springs to visit and would love to meet up with you. Are you able to ride/meet up?

Great you are visiting Steamboat! I always try to meet up with my readers to make turns or just meet in person. Shoot me an email, shayboarder@gmail.com and we’ll set up a time to meet and hopefully get some turns in.

  6. Hey Shay, I’m getting into snowboarding and finally ready to pick up my own setup.

Welcome to snowboarding! In terms of importance, boots are very important with bindings and snowboard after the boots. When choosing snowboard boots, the most important thing is to try them on to find which brand fits your foot the best. Brands vary in how they fit so be open to multiple brands to try on during the decision process. When selecting the snowboard, it comes down to preference in terms of flex, riding style for the board and length. To choose length, there are some important factors to consider: weight, riding skill & style, riding location and height. You do not choose board length based on the nose to chin (that is wrong). Binding selection is by what features you are looking for and how much response you want. Remember the more stiff a binding is, the more responsive it is but less forgiving as well.

  7. Who do you ride for?

I ride for me and to have fun. I do product testing for two companies, but I keep that separate from the blog. I test bindings for Rome and snowboards for Never Summer.

  8. I just got a Never Summer Premier F1 and there's a label "factory waxed" on it - So do I have to wax it again by myself or not?

A factory wax is really a basic wax, generally will last you a day on snow. I'd wax it again if you have the opportunity so the wax job will last longer and be better on snow for you.

  9. Hey Shay, why’d you trade in your Union Contacts?

I liked the Contacts but for everywhere riding especially in the trees, they were too soft for me. I knew I’d spend more time on the Forces as a everything binding so I traded them.

  10. -Jared

Hey! Thanks, it's great to hear the new site is loved. That's great to hear you loved the Bataleon Riot for the same reasons I did and thank you for appreciating my reviews.

I really appreciate my reader's opinions/reviews, I get a lot of responses to each review and always love when people can respond with their own experiences. There have been some great discussions especially when it comes to reviews. I know recently someone commented on the Signal Park Rocker and how it held up on jumps, I asked my friend Adrian who has been riding mine to leave a comment with his response.

Someone else mentioned a forum and for as much as I love the discussions that forums bring, I dislike the moderating and drama that also comes with it. I definitely see a resource with reviews (legit well spoken reviews) as a must in snowboarding. This year I joined up with Board Insiders to review gear for their website which identifies testers, variety of opinions, riding styles and I can't wait to see how it turns out. To be honest, I don't have the time or funds to create the resource and I definitely like what Board Insiders is doing so I'm hoping they are that resource you are talking about.

  11. Shay- I've been following your blog for almost a year now and am pretty blown away by the volume and quality of your content. I was wondering what your day job is that allows you get so much great work done on your website.

Thanks! After blogging for almost 2 years now, I have worked hard to continue daily content and keep it in tune with the style of the blog as well as worth checking out. I'd hate to be like the other sites where it has the same repeated content as everyone else, there is no creativity or hard work there.

My day job is the web content specialist for Steamboat, I get to update the website with content, coding, photos, 5 days a week, M-F job and I love it. It's rare to have a year round job with a resort let alone one you really like, flexible to where I can snowboard on breaks, work long or short days and I work with great people. I also walk the fine line between blogging and working since I would like to keep my job. One lesson I learned early on was if you blog, don't do it at work and don't blog about work. It's too easy to mess it up and lose your job over it. Most of my work is done in the late evening each day, when I leave my day job and I come home to a night job where I go through photos, take photos, write posts or just research ideas. I have a post I've been working on that goes behind the scenes of the blog, to see how much time I put into this and a little bit more about how it comes together. Hope that answers your question and thanks for the support!

  12. Hey Shay, I've seen your shayboarder die cut stickers. Where and how do I get those?

Awesome to hear, the shayboarder die cuts are free and I can ship them anywhere around the world. Send an email to shayboarder@gmail.com with your mailing address, include how many stickers, what colors (white, black, blue, green, orange) you would like and I'll mail them to you right away.

I also include a gallery of sticker photos on facebook and on here in the gallery section so once you've stickered up your snowboard or around town, send a picture my way and I'll put it up!

  13. Hi shay just wondering if you know if vans is having the kento jacket this year or a pro shell. I sent my last years kento back for warranty and just wondering what to expect. Any ideas. Thanks and pray for winter to come soon. Tony

Hey Tony, I just exchanged emails to find out more about Vans Outerwear for 09-10 for you. The Kento jacket is not in the line up for 09-10 unfortunately.

I did ask for some changes going on with the line and was told that they stuck to a smaller pricepoint, there are Hana Beaman and Andreas Wiig Signature Outerwear Collections plus they added Primaloft for a warmer insulated pant and all pants seam sealed and taped.

I would talk with Vans and see what will happen with the warranty, if they will fix the warranty for you and return your same jacket or give you a different jacket for 09-10. Best to talk to them.

  14. hey shay, its zag from the sierra forum. I was wondering if you could hook me up with steves email address (the one who painted your A-frames). I'm gonna paint my A-frames and I wanna know step by step on everything he did. I got the idea I just wanna know how he took out the foam inserts and some random picking his brain questions. thanks shannon!

Hey Zag! Yeah Steve designed these goggles for me, totally repainted and customized them and they came out great!

You can email Steve here to find out more and he also does custom orders if you want him to do all the work.

  15. hey shay! wondering if you could share some advice. i'm a chick, 5'5" 55kg. love riding pow and going super quick, and beginner park rider. used to ride a 149. I've just bought the bataleon fun kink 149, I'm assured that it will be sweet in the park, but what of the rest of the mountain? Do you think it can handle it or spaz out? ta!

Hey! Awesome to hear another chick ripping up the mountain and learning park. The fun kink will definitely be fun for park riding but in powder will make you work a lot harder to stay afloat. At the same time if you are already used to riding a 147 everywhere then it shouldn't be too much of an adjustment. Might be wise to invest in a bigger all mountain board for those powder days when you want something to charge with.

  16. Hey Shay! I love your blog! I'm from Calgary, Alberta and I'm currently riding a 153 K2 Fling. I'm 5'8" and I was just wondering if you knew any snowboarding companies that make outerwear that is roomy. I'm done trying to squeeze into snowboard pants and jackets that are made for people who are 20kg lighter than me. I'm curvy and MOST large and xl brands fit for everyday stuff, but I want to be able to move around and not risk popping buttons and tearing zippers because I'm an aggressive rider with a chest and hips. Any ideas?

Hey Nikki! Thanks for the props! Nice on the fling!

For outerwear, I've been rocking 686 which sizes a bit larger than most companies but even still I choose to rock the men's outerwear because it is large and roomie for me. I've owned the women's gear before and it fit when I was standing still in it but when I started to ride, it wouldn't do.

That being said there are few companies that make outerwear for curvy women, I've heard that Nikita also has XL sizes that run similiar to the 686 XL for women. But again I am rocking men's outerwear because it isn't small on me, I'd rather have it be big than small and snow down my butt. Other brands I've worn in the past are Bonfire and Burton.

I totally hear you on the outerwear, one of my dilemmas when it comes to picking new gear each year.

  17. Yo Shay, Let me know if there's anything I can do to contribute to your website. Cheers, Blotto

Thanks Blotto for the amazing offer! I currently run the site entirely by myself but I'm always open to ideas for the future and love working with new people in the industry. The best way to contact me is through my email (shayboarder@gmail.com) about future ideas/collaborations. Thanks again!

Thanks Bobby and awesome to hear you enjoy the site!

The Skate Banana and I are in a love/hate relationship, some days I enjoy the board and others I can't wait to get off it. I don't own the Pickle but I've ridden it and actually prefer it over the Banana, different sidecut on the heel and tad stiffer.

Definitely riding them both would be the best idea to see what works for you. The Skate Banana is the softest of those boards, easiest to press and softest flex, the Park Pickle is in the middle of the road and the Trice C2 is the stiffer more aggressive board of that list. C2 tech is the most stable to me, you can really haul with it and it's still a fun board to play with in the park. I just rode the Park Pickle again at Hood to press with it on boxes and it was stiffer than the Skate Banana in that aspect.

I'd say look at the boards and your riding style to see what you'll be riding the most often. If it's majority park, go for Skate Banana, if it's mix of Park but also holding a good turn on groomers Park Pickle and if it's bomb and ride fast like Trice, go with his C2 board. Also compare the specs, the Trice is wider than the other two. Feel free to email me (shayboarder@gmail.com) if you have more questions on it, always around to answer them.

  19. Hello Shay! i've been riding for 2 seasons now looking for a new board. have looked at the skate banana but like you said it is easy to ride and won't push me to the next level. i do like the 2010 dark series. i do like to freeride but do want to start to get into the parks and start to freestyle sooner or later. is the dark series a good board for me?

Hey! Skate Banana is ideal for park and progressing in park, definitely one of the highlights of that board. I did enjoy riding it but I prefer more all mountain boards that I can occasionally take into the park. Dark Series is a stiffer park board that is now more freeride orientated with the C2 technology and might be too much if you are looking for a board to progress freestyle with. If you are planning on a little freeriding and more freestyle, go with the Skate Banana. If you are planning on more freeriding and less freestyle, go with the Dark Series. Or go for an in-between board like the TRS or Phoenix. Feel free to email me (shayboarder@gmail.com) if you need more advice on it.

    Hey Daniel,
Well you have two great choices there, pro models by two great riders to choose from with really the only difference being graphics. When I tested the 08-09 boards, there was one significant difference between the two boards and that was size. I rode the 154cm Phoenix (flex is a 5) and 160 Lando (flex is 6.5) which explains the stiffness difference, mervin boards change flex depending on size.

Differences between the boards are the sizes offered, the Phoenix comes in more sizes than the Lando. If you like the look of the Lando better and are set for the 157Wide then I would suggest that board over the Phoenix.

  21. Hey Shay, I'm wondering if you have been able to test out the new Burton Joystick at all. I'm thinking of picking this up, but I'm looking for a 'real' review first!

Unfortunately I haven't been on the Burton Joystick yet, I just rode the Easy Living at Windell's Camp and have that review coming soon. I will definitely be riding the Joystick by November and will put up the review immediately after. Right now it's just waiting for winter.

James who is a backcountry.com guru has a review of the Burton Joystick on the BMB forums and I trust his opinion on board reviews. Hopefully that helps!

  22. hey shay i was wondering if you know if there will still be snow at 4th of July bowl in September 5?

Hey! I haven't gone up since late July but last year there was still snow in September at the 4th of July Bowl on Breck. I'll update the blog when I head up there next but I have heard the snow is getting minimal.

  23. Hi Shay, what're your thoughts on beginners learning to ride on reverse camber boards? I've got a cheap buddy and a burton hero, figured that's better then putting him on my anthem when next season starts

Hey! I'll be putting up a post soon that discusses beginners learning to ride reverse cambers and I hope will get a discussion going on it. I personally think reverse camber will help the learning curve, it makes it easier for a beginner to learn to turn without catching an edge. The Hero would be a lot easier to learn on than your Anthem, the softer flex of the hero and reverse camber will make it easier to pick up turning. It's great to hear you are getting your friend into snowboarding and being affordable about it.

  24. heyy shay..i was wondering if you or going to test the 2010 horrorscope? im considering picking one up, but im not sure if it will be able to handle the hole mountain and not just park

Hey! I haven't been able to ride the 2010 Horrorscope yet and I've heard mixed things on if the flex changed from 08-09 to 09-10, it sounds like it hasn't changed since I reviewed it in 08-09. Depends on your mountain, it's meant to be a park board and I know some people who ride the whole mountain with it. If you want it to be your whole mountain board, maybe size up on it versus keeping your park size. Definitely email shayboarder@gmail.com if you want more help figuring out if it would work for you.

  25. Hi there, Shay, do you know something about the Option Snowboards' insolvency? Is it true?

I have heard from two different sources that Option Snowboards is done for 09-10...but that being said I've seen them in the Buyers Guide and i'm not 100% in the know. I'll see what I can find out for Option being done and update this FAQ as I know more.

  26. hey shay i was wondering if as a girl with size 7.5 boots if i could ride a ns circuit 148 or 151? i weigh 150 and im 5'8" so im too big for the pandora at 146 but im worried the circuit will be too wide. Any thoughts? Also if the circuit will work should i get a 148 or 151? I already have a rome blue 155 to slay the mountain and a want a solid park board to compliment it. Thanks!

I'm in the same boat, unable to ride the pandora from the small sizes, it's why I ride the men's version of that board the evo which has bigger sizes. The new circuit will definitely compliment your rome blue as a park board. In terms of the waist width, the 148 circuit is actually narrower than your 155 blue so you would be fine for your boot size and it wouldn't be too wide for you. Good luck and feel free to email me shayboarder@gmail.com if you have any more questions.

-Katerina

    Hey Katerina,

Awesome on your first full season of riding! The NW conditions are a lot for a board to handle. I have ridden the envi and rode it at Stevens Pass in those exact conditions, the review is here.

It's a hard charging board but the BTX will make it a bit more forgiving for you, it'll definitely challenge you in the beginning. You could also look at the Roxy Eminence which I reviewed here. My only concern is the board length for your weight. The next size down is a 153cm for the envi, that would be the challenging part is riding a 157cm but if you are used to that board size and have ridden it, it'll definitely handle the crud conditions, very stable for you but might be a bit harder to control in the beginning. The eminence would be an easier board since it's more all mountain freestyle. Email me at shayboarder@gmail.com, if you want to discuss it further. Good luck this season!

  28. ok so i bought the 2010 forces in green and on the bottom of the highback, where in is u-shaped, there is like a little peice like crushed in, almost as if it would look if it got nicked, i returned them and got a new pair and the same thing is wrong with them, do u think this is just common, does your forces have this mark???

Nice on the new bindings! I just pulled out my Forces and new Forces SL's to see if they had a similiar mark and they do. The good news is I've spent a whole season on my Forces and they were fine, in fact if you had never mentioned that mark I wouldn't have noticed it. So up to you on what to do with it, it didn't bother me or impact how the binding rides so I wouldn't think twice about it.

  29. Hi Shay- I'm trying locate the women's bonfire boots. Would you recommend them? Do you know if they'll be sold online or in stores only and when do they release? All the board shops here in Minneapolis have never heard of bonfire boots....!

Hey! Awesome you are trying to locate them, I tried them on and definitely a really comfortable boot if they fit your feet. I'll try to help track them down for you, I haven't seen them pop up online yet but winter is approaching.

Bonfire has a store locator page that helps people find out where Bonfire products are located, but you will probably have to call around to find out who has boots. I would start with seeing if they carry Bonfire and then if the shop person you are speaking with has no idea...ask to speak with a supervisor or manager to find out.

    http://www.bonfiresnowboarding.com/en-us/store-locator/

    Or call customer service.

  30. Has your blog received enough attention from the snowboarding industry that companies are sending you free stuff to review and write about?

Good question! The attention and awareness has made it easier to gain access to products I normally wouldn't or couldn't afford to try in one year. I still try to spend the majority of my time at on-snow demo's but unfortunately not all companies are always present there (especially smaller companies). With the smaller companies and some big companies, I've been able to borrow more boards each season for review purposes and then send them back to the companies. I also try to be clear in each post if I bought, borrowed or was given the product and I'm always open to questions about products.

So yes, I do receive free stuff from companies to try out, review and give feedback on. I am happily surprised when I receive free gear and I certainly don't expect it.

-- Jodie

Hey Jodie! Awesome you have been into snowboarding for so long and replacing your old board will make all the difference in your riding.

Between those boards the Rome Blue is the more high intermediate/advanced freeriding board, the Envi is along the same lines and the B-nice is the odd board out, I'd replace that with the B-pro for your choices. I've ridden the envi, blue and b-pro all with great features and all are solid rides. The magne traction will definitely help on the icy conditions because it has more contact points.

Definitely will depend if you want rocker vs camber, the blue is camber so won't be much of an adjustment with the exception of the flex and the gnu boards are banana traction so will be some adjusting, more playfulness and better float in pow when you come out to CO.

Feel free to email me shayboarder@gmail.com if you need more help with narrowing it down. I think regardless of which board you choose, you have three great ones in that list to choose from.

  32. hey shay! just gotta say you run an awesome blog! lots of research/test riding and a massive input from your reviews had firmly led me to wanting a NS SL-R. now the age old question as their website is lacking in info - which size?!! i'd say my riding style sounds pretty much like yours - lots of shredding, some flatland tricks and occasional venture onto rails (often leading to bruising and a dented ego!). generally just having fun on the groomers and in the trees but with the option to try anything. i'm 200lbs, 6'4" with size 11 feet. 158 for a more playful ride or 161 for a stable blast? i'm wanting the 158 to work but have bought too short boards in the past and don't want to make the same mistake! many thanks for your opinion and keep those reviews coming!

Thanks and stoked you like the reviews!

I would judge the size based on the snow conditions and mountains where you ride, if you tend to hit powder and bigger mountains the size up would be a good idea for more stability. If you are on smaller mountains with more groomers, the 158 would hold it's own.

Personal preference is key as well if you feel more comfortable on the bigger boards then I wouldn't mess with that. The 158 can hold your weight and you won't sacrifice too much with the 3cm difference between them. Never Summer's are built tough and can hold weight better than other boards.

Hope that helps and email me shayboarder@gmail.com if you want more questions.

Personally I wouldn't say there's a best one since each has their own way of doing it and it varies on the rider who likes what. Definitely the reverse camber will help you on the powder days, with easier float and not having to lean back and suitable for all mountain. Look at narrowing it down by what shape you'd like, directional vs twin, then narrowing it down to flex whether you want stiffer or softer and what you can afford. I've ridden both Never Summer's and Mervin's products, am impressed with both lines of boards. Shoot me an email at shayboarder@gmail.com if you need help narrowing it down even more.

  34. Hey shay. Thanks!

Thanks! Definitely keep your smokin since it's a great size for your conditions and a playful board. Investing in a longer, more pow friendly board will help in JH. There are a couple powder boards that are worth checking out, even though they are men's boards they make smaller sizes and would be beneficial in the powder. Definitely consider the Malolo, it can still handle the mountain when you get in bounds from the pow. If you want to stick with women's but still tapered, the women's supermodel is definitely going to push your skills and will give you a better float in the powder. If you want to go with a reverse camber/rocker board definitely consider the GNU B-pro. Feel free to email me shayboarder@gmail.com if you need more help with narrowing down the search!

  35. Hey shay, My gf wants to buy the Union trilogy bindings and mount them on my old Burton Custom board (with the triangle mounting pattern). Do you think that setup will work? BTW do you have a recommendation for bindings (she wears size 9 Thirty-Two Lashed boots). Thanks!

Awesome on the new trilogy bindings, I have no complaints about them. I would just make sure that her boots fit in them, the women's trilogy's fit up to a women's boot 9.5 so you'd want the medium size. I don't see anything wrong with that setup. Definitely email me if you have more questions, shayboarder@gmail.com and stoked your gf will be shredding it up this season!

  36. Hey Shay. I was wondering if you had any inside info on resort deals for lift tickets and season passes that you could post up? By the way I love the blog!

Good question, I definitely watch the twitter sites that look for lift ticket discounts and check out when mountains offer better deals or giveaways. I have two season passes, one is paid for through work and the other I pay for with the early season price and for lift tickets I'm always on the lookout for deals to make it more affordable for myself. I think just checking in through twitter/mountain sites you can find some better deals sometimes and being ahead of the game when they have early season pricing. Good luck!

  37. Yo Shay. I found it. My question is What is better at the end of the day of riding? PBR tall boy or Jack & 7 haha see you soon

HAHA oh man thank you Joey for that question. For me personally a PBR tall boy is exactly what I enjoy at the end of the day. See you soon!

  38. I see you've ridden a lot of Bataleon and Never Summer boards. Do you like the Bataleon TBT style or the Never Summer Vario RC style of boards more ? Also, whats your comparison of them in general ?

Completely different rides, TBT is not reverse camber or rocker. In terms of the boards and how they ride, I like both and I've owned both. However I can't compare them because they are such different technologies in how they ride.

My best advice is to try both of them, try a TBT board and then try a RC Technology board. Even just looking at the shapes online will help give a better understanding on what is so different about them, but the best way to know is to try them and see which one you prefer.

  39. so im sure you have heard all the hype about YES. snowboards i just picked one up at the board room in boise( well its on layaway) but any ways just curious if you have had a chance to ride one and what your thoughts are on it P.s. Im the guy who asked you if the highway house was still standing last winter, also if you get a chance to come up to grand targhee or jackson hit me up and we should go shred. Stefan

I have heard the hype on the YES. snowboards and was able to ride one already, I rode the 09-10 Asymmetric rocker 156 model and the review is here. I enjoyed the board, definitely more suitable for backcountry/big mountain riding but the asymmetric model I rode held up on an icy day and the board charged. Definitely a suitable board for Jackson and the conditions you'll have.

Thanks I hope to make it up to JH this year, I"ll let you know and we can make turns!

  40. Hi Shay. Quick question. I am stuck between two boards. The evo_r and the park pickle. I ride mostly park with a few powder days and icy nights. Which would you choose? Thanks

You have two solid boards to choose from, whichever choice you make you'll be fine. I've ridden both and honestly would have a hard time choosing between both as well. Both excel in park and their RC or BTX can help with some powder float, they both grip well on hardpacked with the MTX holding the better edge over the RC.

When it comes to being stuck between them, check out the prices and graphics...which one you like better. Feel free to email me if you are still having a tough time deciding, shayboarder@gmail.com

Hey! With snowboard boots it's really how they fit your feet and what you like. Definitely go try them on and maybe bring your DC's to compare with one foot in your DC's and one foot in the 32's, you'll be able to judge the different flexes and fit from your old boot to that one easier. But really it comes down to fit and how you like them, sorry I can't be more help to you.

  42. Shay, i didnt see the reverse camber K2www in your reviews. have you heard anything about it? i'm looking at the 2009 model, cause this years is outta my price range. Thanks. Love your site! hope to see you at loveland saturday!

I haven't rode the K2 WWW with rocker yet but keep checking as more 09-10 reviews start popping up on the site.

Definitely a park focused rocker board, heard it's on the softer side but haven't rode it to compare or discuss it. I don't believe anything has changed from last year on it so if you can get it for last years price even better for you!

Definitely hope to see you on the mountain and say hi! Shoot me an email if you have any more questions, shayboarder@gmail.com

  43. Hi, I'm about to buy the Ecopop and can't decide on what size. I'm 5,4, and 133lbs. I'm used to riding a 153 but have been told to go for 148. Just don't want to slow down in the powder. What do you think? 148 or 152??

Awesome on the eco pop, that's one of my favorite boards this year! If you are used to riding the 153, I think you'll be better off with sticking to the 152cm since it won't be much of an adjustment and it works for your weight for board size. Plus powder riding you want more of a board.

    Great question!

The 2008-2009 season is when Never Summer switched to reverse camber but they had already begun building the camber boards before they made the switch. So there are 08-09 Never Summer Infinity's that are camber out there that shops still might have.

I would recommend asking to make sure they are reverse camber before you purchase them. The 09-10 models you don't have to worry about but 08-09 could have been camber as well.

Awesome you love the site, thank you so much!

  45. What type of wax do you recommend?

I use a variety of waxes during the season. Right now I have magical go-go wax and bluebird wax that I've been using on my snowboards. I just make sure I match the wax with the temperature for riding and I wax my board every couple days of riding.

  46. Hey shay, you said you rode the lipstick in your easy living v rocker review. Any chance you can put a review of the lipstick up? My sister is seriously looking at it, and id love to hear what you have to say about it.

I did ride the lipstick and the review is here. I really enjoyed riding it and the review goes more in-depth into how it was.

  47. Have you heard anything about a brand of goggles called Siberia? I can't find any information about the various models?

If a company doesn't have a website, that says a lot about the company. Never heard of them and since they only sell on ebay, seems like a price point entry level goggle and nothing to back up who the company is or anything about them (website under construction is a red flag to me).

  48. What camera do you use for your videos and pictures? Love the site, Rey

    Hey Rey,

All of my riding pictures are taken from a Casio Exilim digital camera (I just replaced it with the high speed version) and any product photos are taken with a Canon Rebel EOS. For video if it's helmet cam footage, that's on the vholdr cam and if it's regular video camera that could be the casio exilim or canon vixia.

I pretty much use the casio for the majority of my shots, very happy with it and stoked on the price. It takes a beating and if I need to buy a new one, it won't break my bank account.

  49. How bout an updated review on the Malolo. I see you have riden it in some deeper snow ... give us the verdict in the deep Pow!!

Unfortunately this season hasn't been as epic as hoped but it definitely got in some deep snow conditions where it was exactly as needed, powder board decent float. I wouldn't say I'm won over by how it handled though, the S-rocker was okay but I think the size I have is still on the small end (158cm) for powder and I'd prefer a longer size in powder regardless of rocker type. I've spent more powder days with my 161cm Raptor because I like the bigger size in powder and the handling is what I need.

  50. Hi Shay. Your website should be commended - there aren't many sites out there that provide women-specific snowboarding information and reviews. Thanks a lot for your effort. My question is: have you ever tried ThirtyTwo boots, and in particular, what do you think of the Focus Boa and the Lock Boa?

Thanks so much for the great words on the website! It's great to hear positive feedback on the site.

I haven't tested or owned thirty two boots unfortunately. I've tried to get on other boots but when the fit isn't there, it's hard to give a fair review. I'm a huge fan of the boa system, rock them on my Vans and Bonfire boots and love them.

Definitely try on the boots, see how they fit you and try out the boa system if you can to see if there's any pressure points on your feet before you buy them.

    Good luck!

  51. Hi there please help i have just started snowboarding and am wondering what board to buy. I am female 5.7 inches and weigh around 133 pounds. I am looking for a board for mountain and easy to turn and flexible please help what should i get. Ps i want one i can learn jumps air etc easy on.

Welcome to snowboarding! One of my favorite boards this year to ride for progressing women riders is the Ride Compact, super easy board and forgiving, plus it's lightweight and fun. It's definitely going to make snowboarding easier on you and help progress your riding. I'd look into that board but first make sure you get really comfortable good fitting snowboard boots and the best way is to go into your snowboard shop and try them on to find out which fits you best.

Feel free to email me shayboarder@gmail.com with any questions and awesome you are out there riding!

Hey, awesome on getting a new deck for yourself! You've got two great boards to choose from and it sounds like your riding is progressing great! I think the eco pop might be the board for you, compact might be less of a board than you need at your level. Board length is decided by weight and boot size more than height, I'd look into sticking with the 150cm range since you've already ridden that size. Feel free to email me if you have any more questions and need help, shayboarder@gmail.com

  53. hey shay, I'm wondering how the ashbury and airblaster goggles will fit compared to anon figments. I have figments right now and the have a gap in the nose which drives me crazy.

I haven't tried anon figments to compare between Ashbury's and Airblasters yet. Ashbury's personally give me the best fit and I have a low bridge on my nose so I get gaps often (some gap with airblaster). Best is to try them on, find what shops have them and try them on or do what I do and if you see them on someone, ask to try them on to see how the fit is.

Thanks so much! Awesome on the new board and picking the YES for the do-it-all factor. Really depends on what you are looking for, you could go either way on the sizes. I'd say look at how often you'll do park versus backcountry/powder and pick by what you'll ride most with the board, 159 for backcountry charging and 156 for more park. Regardless your getting a solid board and the size won't hurt you either way. I personally rode the 156 and loved it for everything it handled that day.

Thanks!

Awesome on getting the lotus! Snowboard length is more determined by weight, not height (that whole chin thing was an easy cop-out). I'd look at the 154cm Lotus for you. Feel free to email me if you have any questions shayboarder@gmail.com

  56. Shay, Just learning to board this season. I am making progress each time out, but continue to battle getting off the lift. Any tips or thoughts? TIA

    TIA,
Congrats on becoming a snowboarder and welcome to the long process of loving lifts. My best advice is take it to a bunny slope that's flat with some small slope to it and work on skating with one foot strapped in and skating to a turn. Whenever I get to the top of the chairlift, I know which way I'll be going whether it's left, right or straight and I'll make sure to put my unstrapped in foot on the location where i'll need to turn to. So if I'm getting off the chairlift and going to turn right, I'll place my foot slightly on the board and toe edge so it's ready to pressure that toe to turn right. But I think the best way to get better is take it to a mellow slope and just practice skating and putting that unstrapped foot on the board, learning to turn to a stop.

    Good luck!

  57. shay, if you had a choice to buy either omatic extr-eco bs or never summer evo-r board, which one would you buy?? i'm currently riding 09's gnu d.kass btx board..

Tough choice there, it really depends on the use of the board. I have owned the evo and find it a great park board that can handle outside of the park and I've ridden the extr-eco BS (will be riding it again soon) which handles the mountain. I'd see what reason you are looking into getting it and maybe demo'ing it before buying to see how you like it. Your still riding a newer 09 gnu danny kass btx so what are you looking for? Feel free to email me shayboarder@gmail.com if you need help deciding.

  58. hey shay. can you review the nike zoom force 1 boot? and let me know what you think of it?

Great question! I've only tried on Nike boots and they fit but haven't rode them on the snow to compare. Regardless snowboard boots are the one thing that you have to try on and see if the fit works for you, take it to snow and see how it is for you. What boot works for me, might not work for you at all. But biggest thing is fit, if the fit isn't good for your foot...no matter how techy or rad the boot is, it won't matter without that comfortable fit.

  59. Hey so my brother is learning to ride and i heard that the skate banana is supposed to be really easy to learn on because its easy to turn and is very forgiving. i was just wondering what your opinion on this is. Thanks

Awesome on your brother taking up snowboarding! The skate banana is definitely an easy forgiving ride, softer more park orientated board. In my opinion wouldn't be a bad board to learn on, I'd also look at the Ride Crush as a good progressing board for men.

  60. Do you know anything about the 2011 burton camber board de ja vu flying V? How does it ride? Its suppose to be able to hold an edge but still soft enough to press and pop. Anyone had the chance to check that out yet?

Burton has flying V in a couple of their current boards including the Easy Livin which I have ridden with Flying V. All the boards are different though so best bet is to try the flying V out for yourself at a demo day.

  61. Hi Shay. What board is a good all around beginner snowboard I haven't figured out what style I will be doing so I want to explore all of them. Should I get a Never Summer snowboard, I read your review of the Lotus and it sounds great. Any suggestions on other snowboards to look into would be great.

Awesome you are getting into snowboarding more to buy a board!

Never Summer's definitely make quality boards here in the US and offer a variety of boards for different riding styles. The lotus is their more aggressive women's freeride board and I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner, the infinity-r is more do-able for a beginner and a board you could progress with. Beyond Never Summer there are some other great progressing boards to look at. What mountains/conditions do you ride in and what's your boot size/weight/height? That'll help narrow it down and we can find a board for you easier that way. Shoot me an email shayboarder@gmail.com and we can discuss this further!

  62. Hi Shay. Since you own the Union Force, maybe you can help me with size since I'm a female with boot size 7.5 and I ride a 145 Gnu B-Street. Will the M/L size fit what I have? It's kind of hard to tell from your pictures but any help from you is appreciated. Thanks.

Depends on your boot model to see how they'll fit. I ride Vans which have a wider boot shape than normal even though my feet aren't wide and it helps fit into men's bindings no problem. You could also look at the women's trilogy bindings which are a solid women's binding in the Union lineup. The best way to know for sure is to bring your boots to a store that has the Union Forces or find someone who has them in M/L and see if they fit you. You'll need to adjust the heelcup in more and the straps but it's the best way to know. But shoot me an email shayboarder@gmail.com if you are unable to and let me know your boot model/size and maybe I can find your boot and see how they fit in my bindings.
