They both took up boarding and absolutely love it. He and his team (props to Luke and Liz) were crazy good. Having participated in many sports myself it is inspiring to see the energy and passion going into building the sport…Chris and Burton and Northstar are really helping build something special…

and learn from chris the way he teaches.
I became a better coach as he’s methods
are very very good. I was able to use the
Burton features to teach and found it to
be most effective.
Look out for chris’s little boy Wyatt he is
going to rip when he is older
Was a great interview and read! Just wanted
to say thanks chris!

Lou, rad to hear your story and that you liked that question. I’ve always wondered it and seen people getting to instruct ask about it. Being able to relate to students and teach to them personally is so important.
Brek, those are always fun!

Thu, 25 Jun 2009 21:30:03 +0000http://www.shayboarder.com/?p=5627#comment-3187I’m sure Chris doesn’t remember, but one summer day at High Cascade after most of the kids had headed back to camp I was trying to learn proper b/s 1s. Chris was out helping some of his kids who wanted to keep practicing and decided to adopt me for the afternoon. A few tips, demonstrations and a couple of tries later I was bringing around a pretty clean 180… now it’s one of my favorite tricks, I pop them everywhere. Thanks Chris!
Great interview Shay, some really good points. I especially liked the thoughts on certified v. non-certified instructors. Last season I enrolled in a program that tried to take a few kids from no certs to Level 2 in 4 months. The riding was easy (and thus so was the level 1), but I pulled out without going for the Level 2 since we weren’t getting any hands on practice with coaching (just being taught how to pass the exam) and I felt that just made the whole certification a giant lie. A few of my friends got their Level 2s and I wish them luck, they never experienced how truly difficult it is to understand, adapt and teach a group of students. I guess they will be experiencing first hand what a difference experience v. education can make?
