As the 2008-2009 season winds down, I like to look back at the demo year to see what boards & bindings stood out from the pack. This isn’t meant to be a board test, because I don’t have the ability to ride every board out there so it becomes a list of products requested by readers and by me to check out. I try to ride boards that have interest or brands that are hard to get reviews on and stay clear from boards that I feel I will dislike. For 2008-2009 products, I rode 51 snowboards and 21 bindings. Of the 51 snowboards, 41 of those were mens and 10 were women’s. Of the 21 bindings, 15 of those were women’s and 6 of those were men’s. The majority of the boards and bindings were done on demo days, generally open to the public. I attend as many demo days in Colorado as I possibly can, for early 2008 I spent 6 days on snow riding boards at demos. [singlepic id=5662 w=400 h=300 float=] I’ve been trying to ride more and more women’s products each year to make it a fair review system. Unfortunately at demo days, there are […]

Location: Breckenridge, Colorado Snow Conditions: Bluebird skies with hardpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Monument 777 with Rome Shifts and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: A board to ride everywhere on the mountain Size: 153cm Weight: light Flex: It was a good medium flex, not a soft buttery board but not a stiff charging board either. All mountain ride and handle park to mountain flex. Good torsional flex which made it great for quick turns through the trees and handling a variety of conditions. Turning: The 777 was easier to flex torsionally, especially in the trees riding it could maneuver quickly edge to edge and absorb bumpy terrain very well. Good response edge to edge, I didn’t find myself waiting for the board to be on edge and really was best with shorter quick radius turns. Longer radius turns were harder to pull out and it felt better with shorter turns. Stable: The bamboo sidewalls held an edge when riding the halfpipe, gripped the snow. When dealing with bumpy terrain and trying to go fast, I didn’t feel as stable but when the runs were groomed felt fine with making turns. It’s not a board meant for charging, […]

2008-2009 Burton Vapor Location: Keystone, Colorado Snow Conditions: Snowing with soft packed groomed runs and some powder on the sides of runs. Setup: I rode the Burton Vapor with Burton Lexa bindings and my Rome Vamp boots. First Impression: I don’t even want to think about the price tag on this board and how I can’t afford it.Size: 159cmWeight: light Flex: Longitudinally it felt a lot stiffer towards the tail of the board and torsionally stiffer than I expected but not to say it’s a stiff beast…it’s not. The lightness definitely plays into how the board rides. For just freeriding groomers I didn’t find it exceptional or a dream on snow, it rode and was light, easy to move around and quick edge to edging. Turning: It felt the best on really long S turns, I had to work for the shorter radius turns and didn’t like how it transitioned into them. The long S turns made the board ride fine on the groomers, just taking it easy and using up the whole run was no issue. When I needed quick response the board has it, but the bindings weren’t as quick as the board (wasn’t the best combo […]

2008-2009 Never Summer Premier F1 Location: Loveland, Colorado Snow Conditions: Bluebird hardpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Never Summer Premier F1 with Union Force’s and Union Contacts and my Vans Omni Focus size 8. First Impression: I’m so used to the premier in how it rides. Size: 159cm Weight: average Flex: It’s been softened up a tad for 08-09 and I can’t wait to see how the reverse camber in 09-10 will make the premier more of a do-everything board. It’s less stiff than previous years but only softer between the bindings. The tail as more pop and stiffer flex. Turning: Despite the wider waist with than I need, I still get quick response from edge to edge on the premier. It’s not hard to lay over one carve and then come out and quickly go into the next carve. Between the sidecut and effective edge, you have a board that can handle short radius and long radius carves. Stable: The premier to me is a lot of stable riding, with the dampening to the flex. It absorbs the snow conditions very well and holds and edge through it. You can charge with it and still find yourself in control […]

Setup: I rode the Burton Love with Burton Cartels and my Vans Omni Focus size 8. First Impression: This is the only board that has ever made me smirk just thinking about dirty looks on the mountain and destroying young eyes with board graphics.Size: 158cmWeight: average. Flex: Despite it being a park board, I found the flex good for everything on the mountain. Medium flex overall that held up when riding groomers and could still flex the nose and tail for playing with. It would have been fun to take it in the halfpipe and maybe next weekend if I can demo it for the halfpipe. Felt stiffer under the bindings with decent torsional give and take on it. Turning: It was quick and easy to turn with the deeper sidecut, I had no problems with quick response from toe edge to heel edge and could really just play with it on turns. It was fine on the icy spots holding an edge. Stable: It was the last run with some icy conditions in spots and barely anyone on […]

2008-2009 Lib Tech Dark Series BTX Location: Loveland, CO Snow Conditions: Bluebird with hardpacked groomers to icy groomers. Setup: I rode the Lib Tech Dark Series with my Raiden Tigre bindings and my Vans Omni Focus boots. First Impression: The dark series never lets me down Size: 158cmWeight: heavier than average Flex: Stiffer flex longitudinally and torsionally, which would make it stable for jumps. It’s a do-it all board, stiffer and longer effective edge to handle freeriding but could take into the jump line if you wanted to and has good pop to it. If you are expecting an easy, non-aggressive board that’s buttery soft this is not it. Turning: The dark has a longer effective edge which makes turns really stable and controlled. With the mtx, it was gradual so I never felt like the mtx was holding me into a turn. The response edge to edge is quick. Obviously turning on ice is no issue, the mtx holds an edge. Stable: Very stable ride, when hauling ass or just taking it easy. I didn’t have much chop to take it through but in some leftover powder spots, the board just drove through them no problem. Setup: I rode the Salomon Salomon Sanchez with Salomon women’s relay-e bindings and my Vans Omni Focus boots. First Impression: This is a playful board with a dirty name. Size: 154cmWeight: Didn’t notice at the time. Flex: It’s a softer flexing board, easy to flex torsionally and longitudinally. I didn’t have any issues with pressing the nose or tail. I didn’t encounter any vibrations with the softer flex which was good, but I also didn’t ride it as hard as other boards because of the size and softer flex. Turning: It was easy to maneuver and initiate turns. On the groomers it was very smooth and predictable when turning. On the icy spots, it held an edge for me when turning. Stable: Definitely when I was going faster with it, wasn’t as stable but I wasn’t expecting it to be. It did absorb really choppy terrain though, good stability through that at less speeds. Pop: It had really good playful pop to it, definitely easy to pop off the tail and ollie with. Setup: I rode the Rossignol JDub MTX with Union Force SL bindings and my Vans Omni Focus size 8. First Impression: Stiffer freestyle deck meant for backcountry booters.Size: 154cmWeight: average Flex: The Jdub is a stiffer freestyle board, you could ride it as a freeride board and hit park laps every now and then with it and still be fine. It features a stiffer tail than nose. Turning: With the stiffness, it handles long radius turns very smooth and holds the edge through any terrain. Definitely a more advanced board, with the stiffness you have to really be able to flex the board and it’s not a easy board to ride off the bat.Stable: I didn’t encounter any unstable feeling on the jdub, overall smooth ride when I was freeriding with it. The magnetraction helps it grip the snow on icy spots and very grippy. It handled speed good and it never felt like I was riding a smaller board than I typically would. Setup: I rode the Salomon Official with my Raiden Tigre bindings and my Vans Omni Focus boots. First Impression: This board is plain fun joy. Size: 155cmWeight: Didn’t notice at the time. Flex: It’s a softer flexing board, very soft torsionally so it really is easy to initiate turns and get quick response from toeside or heelside turns. I had no problem just making easy turns on it and getting the board to go into each turn. The nose was softer than the tail. Turning: It was easy to maneuver and initiate turns. It was a very predictable ride and the equalizer sidecut really holds an edge during turning which was surprising on such a softer board. I didn’t have any vibrations or issues with the board not holding on edge and chattering out. Short radius turns felt the best on the official, longer radius were okay but short radius felt more natural. Setup: I rode the Nitro T2 with Union Force SL bindings and my Vans Omni Focus boots size 8. First Impression: Yet another Nitro that can do it all Size: 155cm Weight: lighter than average Flex: I wouldn’t classify it as a stiff board and definitely not a soft board, a good mid point for flex which is nice cause it could handle riding when you aren’t park riding all the time. It has more torsional flex, easier to maneuver into turns and with the wider width it was really stable. Turning: The wiig that I rode has the tri-progressive sidecut and man…its good to hold an edge, you go through each part of the turn and can power into the next turn. That makes it really easy to initiate but whether you are going short radius or long radius, you have a good controlled arc. Through the icy spots, it held an edge when I was turning. It didn’t have as much dampening so through some rougher bumpier areas is when I felt the board more. Stable: Since the waist width was wider than […]
