Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Softpacked to hardpacked conditions. Setup: I rode the Capita Ultrafear FK with Union Force bindings and Vans aura boots. Size: 155 First Impression: It’s been a couple years since I’ve owned the Ultrafear but I remember why I loved it. Solid freestyle board! Weight: Average. Flex: On the spectrum, the Ultrafear is on the middle of the range for overall flex. It’s meant to be a stiffer freestyle board, not as soft as the horrorscope and not as stiff as the mid range boards. The longitudinal flex feels a tad stiffer which helps for the overall handling of the board. Torsionally there’s some give and play to the board which helps for quick response. The nose and tail are still soft enough for playing around on and float in any powder. The Capita Ultrafear features freestyle FK with zero camber from insert to insert, reverse camber from outside insert to contact point and wah-pow on the nose and tail of the board. Turning:One of the highlights of the Ultrafear is the handling. It takes very little adjustment to ride this board and it’s one of those boards that I honestly think any level could […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Softpacked to hardpacked conditions. Setup: I rode the Lib Tech Trice with Roxy Torah Bright bindings and Vans aura boots. Size: 153 First Impression: The Trice rides just like Travis Rice. Fast, charging and handles the mountain like a dream. Weight: Average. Flex: The Trice offers a stiffer, stable ride without sacrificing the fun of it. Between the bindings, it’s torsionally softer so you get quick response from the board. From the bindings to the blunted nose/tail, you have a stiffer flex to help absorb impact and give you a stable ride on the mountain. I sized down with the Trice this year and it still handled and charged the mountain. The T.Rice has C2 technology which is banana rocker between the bindings and camber from the inserts to the contact points. Turning: Quick and responsive. Here’s the deal, last time I rode the Trice, it was the 57 and this time with the 53 it was even better despite the waist width of 25.3. The numbers are dialed and despite being wide, it turns quickly and responds to the rider and the snow. It’s definitely not a board for a beginner but for […]

Location: Keystone & Vail, CO Snow Conditions: Softpacked to hardpacked conditions, softer snow conditions with fresh snow in spots. Setup: I rode the Thrive Renegade with Burton Escapade bindings and Ride Cadence Focus boots. Size: 154 First Impression: Thrive delivers a quiver killer. One board you can ride anywhere that won’t cost an arm and a leg. Weight: Average. Flex: The Renegade is a good middle of the road board for flex, it’s not too stiff and not too soft. Most of the flex forgiveness comes from between the bindings which makes it very maneuverable and responsive. The stiffer spots are from the bindings outwards to the nose/tail for stability. The Thrive Renegade features a hybrid rocker. Rocker between the feet, camber zones under foot that extend out towards the tip and tail, finishing with small rocker zones. Turning: This is where the Renegade excelled. It was quite easy to engage on edge and very reliable in the turning. If you wanted a short radius turn, it was quick and lively to follow through with the arc of the turn. If you wanted a longer, drawn out turn…it delivered without releasing you out of the turn early. Very consistent and […]

Location: Keystone, CO Snow Conditions: Softpacked to hardpacked conditions, powder conditions from new snow to older snow. Setup: I rode the Never Summer Lotus with Burton Escapade bindings and Ride Cadence Focus boots. Size: 157 First Impression: The Lotus continues to be Never Summer’s women’s freeriding/charging snowboard. Weight: Average. Flex: Based off the men’s Premier F1, the Lotus gives women a board that is stiffer, more charging and built for freeriding. Overall, it’s a stiffer flex underfoot with a bit softer torsional flex between the bindings. The nose is softer to handle powder and the board has a stiffer tail for more control. The board has a good amount of dampening to help absorb the bumps. Never Summer’s RC technology features rocker between the feet and camber outside the bindings. Turning: One of the best perks of the Lotus is the quick handling and engagement into turns despite the stiffer flex. You can get the board into short radius turns quickly and still have good stiffer flex to handle the longer drawn out S turns. Regardless you can power through turns. Stable: For the current conditions, the lotus has ridden a decent amount of hardpacked/icy conditions and it’s still holding […]

Setup: I rode the Arbor Coda with my Burton Escapade bindings and Ride Cadence boots size 8. Size: 157cm. First Impression: The Coda continues to offer that all-mountain style of riding wherever you want to go. Weight: Average. Flex: The Coda is Arbor’s all-mountain riding snowboard with a medium flex and the mountain system to handle everything you want to ride. Overall it’s in the middle of the flex scale. The nose is a tad softer with a stiffer tail to allow for powering through turns. Torsionally it’s more responsive, quick edging and longitudinally it’s a bit stiffer to give you more power and stability on the mountain. The Coda features Arbor’s Mountain System Technology designed to ride the mountain with grip-tech, parabolic rocker, directional twin shaping, power ply topsheet, toro tips and rocker flex. The mountain system reverse camber which has parabolic rocker which has more rocker in the center of the board and decreases the rocker to the tip and tail of the board.
Location: Keystone, CO Snow Conditions: Softpacked corduroy to hard packed night riding. Setup: I rode the Never Summer Pandora with Burton Escapade bindings and Ride Cadence Focus boots. Size: 149 First Impression: The Pandora carries on the freestyle flare of the evo but built for women. Weight: Average. Flex: The Pandora is on the softer side but it’s a park board meant to be more playful. The softer flex is between the bindings with a torsional softness to it. It makes it really quick response torsionally. Then underfoot there is a stiffer flex to help with freeriding moments and landings. The Pandora features RC Technology which is a mix of rocker and camber, rocker between the feet and camber just outside both of the bindings. Turning: The Pandora is a really quick snappy board on edge. I even took a picture of my carves on corduroy to show just how responsive the board can be with shorter turns. The longer radius turns weren’t as stable but I also take into account the smaller size board. Stable: The softer freestyle flex of the Pandora holds up for riding the mountain but it’s not as stable as the Infinity or Lotus. It […]

Location: Mt. Baker, WA and Thompson Pass, Alaska Snow Conditions: Mixture of heavier fresh snow to lighter snow. Setup: I rode the K2 Panoramic with Spark R&D Burner bindings and Vans size 8 women’s boots. Size: 158cm. First Impression: I got this board blindly and it more than did the job for a splitboard setup. Good all-around mountain splitboard. Weight: Average Ease of Use: The Panoramic was easier to set up since I had already set up a Venture splitboard the season before. I had all the things needed (board, voile system, sparks bindings) so it just meant sitting down and setting it up to my stance. The K2 climbing skins that came with the setup weren’t bad but definitely had some days where snow was able to get into the skins and had to be cleared to continue skinning up. Flex: The K2 Panoramic was definitely more forgiving than expected. The all-terrain rocker combo with bambooyah made it a good medium range for flex on the mountain. Longitudinally it had the bambooyah feel to it that was lively and poppy on the board but torsionally it had a softer more forgiving feel. I really liked that when I rode […]

Setup: I rode the Endeavor Guerilla with Union Atlas Team bindings and Flow Luxe Coiler boots size 8. Size: 155cm First Impression: The Guerilla offers more all-mountain freestyle packed with multi-camber Weight: average. Flex: All-around on the medium flex of the scale. The Guerilla was ideal for all-mountain everything. Tad softer torsional for quick engagement and response, longitudinally medium of the range. It was consistent all around in the handling. The Guerilla has a traditional camber between the bindings for pop and a 3mm rise of reverse camber out to the contact points for fun, float in snow and hook free ride. Turning: Easy initiation into turns with the lift contact points. Once into the turn, you had the consistency to arc through the turn. Pretty easy board to ride, definitely more all-mountain handling. Stable: The spring slush conditions meant harder packed in the morning and really really soft slush in the afternoon. Most of the days were in the softer slush conditions where the board didn’t hook into the softer snow. A tad loose feeling on the speed hauling runs. Flex: The DBX is on the stiffer side of the spectrum, similar to the TFA for flex but a bit more lively in the riding and handling. The bamboo core gives the board a different feel than the TFA but it has the same TFA shape. Flex is described as a 7 and rides like it, stiffer flex longitidinally to help with charging, somewhat softer torsional flex but not by much. The DBX features freeride FK which is camber between the outside inserts, reverse camber outside of the bindings and wah-pow on the nose and tail.
