It’s amazing to stand on the top of a trail, know your line and just go for it. Snowboarding or mountain biking – those moments you remember! My last visit to Whistler was for one trail, to conquer the Top of the World. I knew that I wanted to ride the trail when it opened a couple years ago. Not only is it a black trail but the amount of vertical makes for one sick day of riding. I loaded up the bike and headed to Whistler with my mom along for the adventure. She doesn’t mountain bike but there’s enough in the town of Whistler to keep her occupied while I rode the trails. Once in Whistler, it was time to make plans for the bike park the next day. Stephanie, Joe, Janet and friends all came out to rally the park. We took warmup laps, getting back on the trails and making sure we were dialed before heading up to Top of the World. Eventually it was time to hit the gondola line and head to the top. Dropping into Top of the World was certainly memorable because it was the “this is it” moment and just knowing […]

One of the perks of being back in the Northwest is being in close proximity to the Whistler Bike Park. Just a five hour drive means I can head up to Canada for the weekend and ride an amazing bike park with friends. I was pretty excited to know that I would be back in the Northwest just in time for the Whistler Bike Park opening day on May 16. Friday was the big opening day so I headed up with my friend Carrie to hit the trails together. We parked our cars at our lodging for the weekend and rode into town. We ended up taking a lap before meeting up with other familiar faces. Our group ended up being 4 girls (myself, Carrie, Janet and Rachel) lapping the park. We mixed up the trails between easy and more technical, harder. Since it was day one, it was good to get back into the swing of biking without going too gnarly. It was such a good feeling to be back on trails like Heart of Darkness, Ninja Cougar, Samurai Pizza Cat and B-Line. With the new GoFest Whistler Festival going on for opening weekend – we were able to […]

All I wanted for my 30th birthday was laps in the Whistler bike park, good friends, a visit to the spa and sushi dinner. Whatever else was just a bonus to a fun day! The best part – I got everything I wanted for my birthday. We started the morning with a ride up Whistler Mountain so we could check out the Peak to Peak gondola. I had ridden it many times in the winter but it was fun to check it out in the summer. The weather cleared up top for us despite some rainfall on the ride over. For the afternoon, Carrie and I headed back to Whistler Bike Park to get in our laps. Her goal for me was to start my 30s stepping up my bike game and it worked! We did funshine rolly drops, smoke and mirrors, blueseum. I finally did the scary rock section of the samurai pizza cat. Last summer I started drops, I went from the tiniest drop in Wednesday night delight to the fourth jump by the end of the summer. To kick off 30, I went to the fifth jump (second biggest) and landed twice! It was good fun. Ever […]

I remember the moment when I told myself downhill mountain biking was not for me. I was standing in the base of Whistler Village many summers ago as I watched the mountain bikers walking by with monstrous expensive bikes, full face helmets and padding covered in dirt. I could see the features, the drops and the berms from the base that they were riding. I was floored. I realized that that downhill mountain biking was gnarly and I could never be that gnarly. Despite living in towns that had lift accessed mountain biking, I never got into it. I always had the opportunity to ride snow in the summer and didn’t want to give that up. But it wasn’t until last summer at Mammoth that I realized there was no way I could snowboard that summer so I needed to give mountain biking a chance. I started on the easiest green trail (seriously, families could pass by me) where I started to get comfortable on the $600 used full-suspension Giant Reign I bought. I eventually stepped it up to the easy blues and harder blues. I went from sitting on the seat to learning to ride downhill properly, standing with […]

Yesterday was about kicking off winter with the Keystone Rail Jam but today was about finishing off the Bike Park closing day. I was pretty amped to get on the dirt, ride the trails and start to familarize myself with the Bike Park at Keystone. It felt great to finally be riding my new Norco Aurum that took me all summer to pay off but now it’s finally mine! I started out on the easy trails, green and blues to get myself comfortable. Girl Scouts, Suz’s Cruise, Eye of the Tiger, Mosquito Coast, Boy Scouts, Bluegrass, River Run Trail, Easy Street were the warm-up laps. After feeling a bit more confident and talking with a couple other riders about the harder trails, I decided that I just needed to do it. So I dropped into Cowboy Up, launched the first drop and kept riding through. I only got off to walk half of the rock garden before riding onto TNT and punk rock to Loggers Lane to Boy Scouts to River Run Trail. The vibes today were great. I met a couple people riding, shared the trail map when I had to figure out the next trail and had some […]

I might have missed Crankworx but I didn’t wanna miss out on getting more laps in the Whistler Bike Park and experiencing one more women’s clinic night. Since I had been traveling through Vancouver so many times this summer, it was the perfect opportunity to come ride Bike Park and do a Vancouver twitter scavenger hunt on Wednesday. Since today would be a full evening of bike park with the women’s clinic, Carrie and I had a late start to the day. By the time we arrived, the lines were reasonable and we quickly made our way up the mountain. Since Carrie was coming back to her bike from an injury, today was a confidence boosting kind of day. At 5:30pm it was time to meet up for the women’s bike clinic. This was my second time taking advantage of the $20 clinic. I liked being able to try trails and work on skills with other women. Today we wanted to head up to Garbanzo to ride the intermediate blue trail Blue Velvet for the clinic. A couple girls had already ridden it but a couple of us hasn’t or hadn’t in a while. Tim was the coach for our […]

For as long as I can remember, snowboarding has been my main passion. I’ve made my dreams come true with year round riding and never thinking twice about it. I figured since I was so passionate about snowboarding, I’d probably wouldn’t find another sport that would make me feel the same way. In reality, I haven’t put down the snowboard long enough to really experience anything else. Most of my previous summers meant long drives to a patch of snow or moving to Hood to work at Windells Camp so I could ride everyday. I loved it but this summer I was ready for a break. The snow patches were a bit harder to get to, flights to Portland weren’t as affordable and I figured why not enjoy summer? The timing was right with a Bike Park in my backyard and a used Giant Reign mountain bike for $600. I was determined to finally give mountain biking a chance. I started out on the easiest trail at Mammoth, Downtown. I lapped it a couple times to get the hang of being back on a bike, luckily the trail taught me the basics of riding on sand (something very common at […]
