The 2nd item in my collection of gear that has hit 100 days is my Vans Omni Focus boots. I purchased the boots in the fall of 2006. Since then they’ve been my main snowboard boots. I was surprised that these boots lasted 2 seasons for me, easily going above and beyond the life. When I first got the boots, they were stiff and it took a good 6 days of riding before they were the perfect fit. Now after a lot of days on them, they have packed out and are a lot softer of a boot than when I first got them. The only thing I changed on the boots was the production insoles, I replaced those twice throughout the life with superfeet insoles.Just to be clear…I’m your average snowboarder, give or take. I’m not pro, I’m not a beginner…I’m right in the middle of those two extremes. I put my Vans Omni Focus to the test this year to see how they are after 100 days on snow. This is Shay’s 100 Day Perspective…and I plan to do this with more products that hit 100 days. Boa: The biggest concern from most people is the boa. I […]

Location: Keystone, CO Snow Conditions: Snowing with hard groomed to packed powder conditions on the runs. Setup: I rode the Rome vamp boots with the Rome Blue snowboard and Rome Madison bindings. First Impression: I had the chance to try these on at SIA since the display models are size 8. I was stoked to see that they fit me and were quite comfortable. Weight: Relatively light to average weight Lacing System: The Vamp have the boa focus system offering separate upper and lower cables to tighten the boots. Appearance: I tried on the black vamps which were black with some cool blue highlights. I really liked the look of them at SIA but even with me…I prefer black boots that can get dirty, muddy and overall not look bad after a season of riding. Flex: When I tried them on at SIA, I only flexed my ankles to the toes of the boots…but did not flex side to side in the boot. The flex forward was fine and comfortable for me. When I got on snow with the boots, the side flex was softer that I thought. I remember thinking it was so soft that I was relying a […]

Of all the snowboard equipment to buy, boots are the most important. If you don’t have boots that fit good, your time on the mountain will not be enjoyable. I constantly tell people on forums that boots are your number #1 purchase for snowboarding. It’s also the purchase where price does not matter, but Fit of the boot does. When it comes time to seek out possible snowboard boots, I narrow it to brand, then model and then size. Vans boots have always been the best fit for my foot so I have stuck with them although this year I did pick up another brand that also fit so that was lucky. With Vans I made sure to try on my shoe size first ( I wear size 9 shoes) in snowboard boots, then I went down to 8.5 and finally down to 8 which was the perfect fit. Snowboard boots pack out throughout the season so you want to purchase your boots on a good fit that will last. If you get the perfect comfortable fit in the snowboard store, eventually it’ll pack out to the non-comfortable too loose fit. So I make sure my toes touch the end […]
