The 2nd item in my collection of gear that has hit 100 days is my Vans Omni Focus boots. I purchased the boots in the fall of 2006. Since then they’ve been my main snowboard boots. I was surprised that these boots lasted 2 seasons for me, easily going above and beyond the life. When I first got the boots, they were stiff and it took a good 6 days of riding before they were the perfect fit. Now after a lot of days on them, they have packed out and are a lot softer of a boot than when I first got them. The only thing I changed on the boots was the production insoles, I replaced those twice throughout the life with superfeet insoles.Just to be clear…I’m your average snowboarder, give or take. I’m not pro, I’m not a beginner…I’m right in the middle of those two extremes. I put my Vans Omni Focus to the test this year to see how they are after 100 days on snow. This is Shay’s 100 Day Perspective…and I plan to do this with more products that hit 100 days. Boa: The biggest concern from most people is the boa. I […]

Location: Keystone, CO Snow Conditions: Snowing with hard groomed to packed powder conditions on the runs. Setup: I rode the Rome vamp boots with the Rome Blue snowboard and Rome Madison bindings. First Impression: I had the chance to try these on at SIA since the display models are size 8. I was stoked to see that they fit me and were quite comfortable. Weight: Relatively light to average weight Lacing System: The Vamp have the boa focus system offering separate upper and lower cables to tighten the boots. Appearance: I tried on the black vamps which were black with some cool blue highlights. I really liked the look of them at SIA but even with me…I prefer black boots that can get dirty, muddy and overall not look bad after a season of riding. Flex: When I tried them on at SIA, I only flexed my ankles to the toes of the boots…but did not flex side to side in the boot. The flex forward was fine and comfortable for me. When I got on snow with the boots, the side flex was softer that I thought. I remember thinking it was so soft that I was relying a […]

Originally submitted at Evogear You can’t kill a classic! Defcon’s Protocol Digi-Camo Glove has been their best selling glove for five years straight. The Airoprene shell repels water and wind, while body moisture is allowed to pass through. The anti-slip palm ensures rock solid sticky paws all day long. And of course, the the Defcon Protocol Glove boasts the killer digi-camo design…. these guys not only keep your grabs dry, but lookin’ fly. Defcon Protocol Digi-Camo Glove spankin awesome By Shay from Steamboat Springs, Colorado on 11/19/2007 4out of 5 Sizing: Feels true to size Pros: Dry, Lightweight, Good Grip, Durable Cons: None Best Uses: Snowboarding Describe Yourself: Awesome Gear Usage: Winter Sports I got the protocol’s for half-off and they were totally worth it. A solid pipe glove that you can wear on colder days and still keep your hands nice and dry. I’ve been wearing these gloves the last 3 weeks here in Colorado and loving every day that I’m in them. My only complaint is when i’m wearing the gloves I can’t use the scroll button on my ipod…but that’s a really small complaint for a glove that is great.

One of the best investments I’ve made is travel luggage. Depending how often you travel with your gear, you need to get your gear there safely through the airlines. It is wise to get good luggage because guess what…it lasts! Before I picked up new luggage this year, I used my Dakine board bag for the last couple seasons of traveling. I decided on Burton for my luggage, I love their soft goods and the luggage is exceptional. When picking out luggage, I wanted something with wheels and enough to fit a couple boards plus my gear. I didn’t pay full price for either of my luggage which is always excellent. I bought the Wheelie Locker early on in the season when I could use my instructor discount. The Wheelie Double Deck I found at 50% off from Wave Rave Snowboard Shops (amazing deal, good store!)…and I grabbed it up as soon as I could. 06-07 Burton Wheelie Locker Color: Distressed Plaid Retail Price: $259.95 Features: Holds multiple boards up to 166 cm in length Lower board storage provides instant access to a single deck without having to unpack the entire bag Fully padded board protection Double Deck construction seperates […]

These reviews were done over a period of time, from 05-06 season in Washington to the early 06-07 season in Colorado. Each review is judged by the same standard and for the majority of reviews I used my own boots (some exceptions). During demos I try to stick to riding the same size board of 157-159cm with the exception of some female boards which come in smaller sizes. I have the weight to back up riding a men’s board, however I do try to ride women’s boards in the longer lengths. About me as a snowboarder: I’m coming up on my 12th season snowboarding: 11 seasons in the NW and 1 season in Colorado. I am a freerider (I ride trees, powder, steeps, groomers, natural terrain) and I ride halfpipe. I am 5’6″ and typically ride a 158cm for my all mountain board, my powder board is a 161 or 164cm and my park board is a 155cm. I weigh about 200lbs give or take. I am a regular rider with a 22 inch width, +15, -15 stance angles. I wear size 8 womens snowboard boots. My opinion is only my opinion…of how these snowboards rode. Take it as you […]

Of all the snowboard equipment to buy, boots are the most important. If you don’t have boots that fit good, your time on the mountain will not be enjoyable. I constantly tell people on forums that boots are your number #1 purchase for snowboarding. It’s also the purchase where price does not matter, but Fit of the boot does. When it comes time to seek out possible snowboard boots, I narrow it to brand, then model and then size. Vans boots have always been the best fit for my foot so I have stuck with them although this year I did pick up another brand that also fit so that was lucky. With Vans I made sure to try on my shoe size first ( I wear size 9 shoes) in snowboard boots, then I went down to 8.5 and finally down to 8 which was the perfect fit. Snowboard boots pack out throughout the season so you want to purchase your boots on a good fit that will last. If you get the perfect comfortable fit in the snowboard store, eventually it’ll pack out to the non-comfortable too loose fit. So I make sure my toes touch the end […]

I love outerwear and I usually keep most of my old outerwear…although I always try to pass on gear to friends that need it. Just in case someone forgets their outerwear or needs to borrow some, I have spare stuff in my closet. Today was the big tent sale in town so I managed to score a pair of black cargo snowboard pants by 686…my favorite outerwear company. I got them for $85 so I just had to share my good luck. I also picked up the Helly Hanson jacket back in Seattle for $60…so I’m stoked because it’s another outerwear set for my collection. I posed wearing both on my back porch that looks out over Steamboat. Jacket: Helly Hansen Windbreaker (Helly Tech Watertight Tech for Wet weather conditions) Best Conditions: This is my new lightweight, pre-season sunny day jacket. Pros: Lightweight and breathable material. Cons: No vents Pants: 686 Mannual MCG 10k (10,000mm and 8,000gm) Best Conditions: I haven’t taken them out on snow yet, but for CO dry snow these pants will be my everything pants. Pros: warm liner, leg vents, cargo pockets and a couple other necessary pockets. Black Color! Cons: mens pants so they will […]
