Intended Purpose: The Voyageur is a new design for 2013 that delivers a rimless design with the quick step lens system built for maximum versatility on the mountain. Location: I wore the goggles at Stevens Pass, Alaska and Whistler/Blackcomb. They’ve been taken on a couple trips with me so far this year. Conditions: Mix of sunny bluebird to overcast light on the mountain. Color: I rode the Voyageur in the teal color choice which is a fun bright color. This is probably what I liked most about the goggle is the patterns and crazy brights without getting too out there. The teal around the frame is simple but then on the strap, you have a full range of patterns with colors from white, gray to black. Lens: I’ve been riding the Voyageur’s with the gold alchemy mirror lens. It’s good for keeping the sunshine out of your face but also can handle some cloudy/flat light conditions when they come out of nowhere. The UV protection on the lens helps with any glare and brightness on the mountain. Fit: This goggle fit around my face very snug but it wasn’t as secure around my nose as I’d like. Since I have […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Burton Root with Burton Genesis bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 144cm First Impression: Want something more all mountain than the Nug, this is it. Weight: Average. Flex: The Root continues where the Nug left off. Similar in flex, it’s medium with a tad softer nose and tail for playfulness. Torsionally it’s softer, easier to get response from. The Root has flat top technology, a flat profile between the feet for stability, better balance and continuous edge control. The tip and tail kick off with an early rise for catch free. The Flat Top makes it noticeably a bit more stable for handling than the Nug with V-rocker. Turning: Easy to engage into turns and get quick response out of. Easy to get into short radius turns and did a decent job at handling longer radius turns. The effective edge on the Root rides like a longer board so it doesn’t really feel like you are on a 144cm short board. Stable: The Root definitely handled on the mountain for stability, it didn’t feel like a 143cm board. Cruised well, turned well and for […]

Setup: I rode the GNU Ladies Choice with GNU B-Free bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 151.5cm. First Impression: Offering up the whole mountain on a platter and giving you a deck that can handle whatever you give it. Weight: Average. Flex: The Ladies Choice is a good medium flex range snowboard for women. It’s a stiffer flex underfoot to help with stability on landings with a softer torsional flex between the bindings. Overall it’s a mid range for flex, it’s not a soft board by any means and it’s not a stiff board. It’s right in the middle which is perfect for handling everything from park to mountain freeriding. The Ladies Choice features a C2 BTX technology which is banana rocker between the bindings and camber from the inserts to the contact points. Turning: Easy to initiate into turns, making it a bit more forgiving of a ride than I expected. But once into turns, you had total control of the aggressiveness of the handling into each turn. The board was quick and responsive for shorter quicker turns and could still ride […]

Location: Mission Ridge, WA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Salomon Powder Snake with Salomon Halogram bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 156 cm First Impression: I was hesitant about how this would handle on groomers but the Powder Snake could ride the groomers with ease and a bit of playfulness. Weight: Average. Flex: The Powder Snake has a softer tapered nose and tail which helps give it the playful feeling on the mountain. In between the bindings it’s a bit stiffer so you feel more stable on freeriding and holding an edge. Overall it’s a 5 on the flex scale, it’s pretty much middle of the road for flex. There’s softer attributes to it but there’s a stiffer response you get. Torsionally it’s stiffer so it’s not super quick edge to edge but more relaxed and playful. The Powder Snake features pow rocker which is a flat profile between the bindings for stability with more rocker on the tip and tail for playfulness. Turning: Despite the stiffer mid flex it didn’t require much effort to get into turns, it just wasn’t as quick responsively as other boards. The Quadratic sidecut definitely gives the […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Rome Hammerhead with the Mob Bosses bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 153cm. First Impression: Woah crazy shape but you don’t notice it when you are riding. Weight: Average. Flex: The Hammerhead is definitely built to be a softer park flex for on-mountain jibbing and freestyle fun. Torsionally it’s a softer more playful board, easy to engage into the next turn and get quick response for turning. It’s stiffer underfoot to give you support and stability while cruising. The nose and tail are medium range for flex, definitely soft enough to be playful but not overly soft so you wipe out while buttering. Turning: Easy engagement on the Hammerhead. Overall it’s a pretty forgiving, easy to ride board. The softer flex and thinning between the bindings allows for you to get quick response out of it. Underneath the bindings you have more support with a stiffer flex so you feel like you can still cruise on it. Short turns were the most impressive, longer turns did okay but this board was built for quick. Stable: The Hammerhead is softer so it’s not as stable […]

Setup: I rode the Jones Mothership with Union Trilogy bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 154 cm (but technically this size doesn’t exist, it’ll be 152 or 156) First Impression: I started laughing out of excitement when I realized how fast, stable and how the board could carve. It was a good laugh out of delight. Weight: Average. Flex: The Mothership is based off of the men’s Flagship so it’s built for freeriding, charging and riding mountains with smooth lines. The flex is on the stiffer end with a tad softer nose and more stiffer responsive tail to help drive the board into turns and powder lines. Torsionally it’s a bit softer so you still get good edge to edge response. Overall on the scale it’s identified as a 6 for flex and I agree. The Mothership is camber underfoot and rocker just a couple inches outside of the inserts to the contact points. Turning: You can make a variety of turns with the Mothership, it was really smooth on long drawn out S turns and locked in without feeling locked in. On […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the NOW IPO Bindings on the Arbor Swoon with my Vans Ferra Boots size 8. Time to set up the binding: JF Pelchat was on hand to make sure the bindings went out with good fit for the sizing options he had at the demo. He took the time to get mine dialed in and also matched the bushing flex to the board I was riding so it was a better match. Fit: I tried the NOW IPO bindings in the medium size which fit my boot for sizing, the toe strap and ankle straps were centered just fine. First Impression: Props to JF for his hard work on NOW bindings that helps connect you to the board and absorb the terrain. Appearance: The NOW IPO bindings come in two choices for 2013. There is the white version and the black version. Overall a pretty simple looking binding with the NOW logo, branding and design. I rode the black version and was fine with the appearance of the binding. Comfort: The NOW IPO bindings were good on comfort. Good padding in the ankle strap, baseplate and highback. Time to set up the binding: This was the second setup of the day and Parker took care of it, he’s a magician when it comes to demos and turning the screws. Fit: I rode these bindings in the M/L size which fit the width of my boots and were adjusted to fit the length of my boots with the heelcup coming in a notch. The straps did fine with my Vans Ferra boots. First Impression: These bindings are the stiffest in the Union line and no joke. Be ready for response and charging the mountain. Appearance: The Chargers are sleek when you look at them. The full carbon highback is breathtaking and arguably makes you bow down to how it handles. I like the mix of orange with the binding on the ratchets and baseplate and heelcup. Comfort: The padding in the baseplate and toe ramp help cushion the ride. It’s still a lightweight binding and from what I noticed with the Jones Flagship Carbon board, there’s not as much dampening to totally pillowtop […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Arbor Swoon with NOW IPO bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 155cm. First Impression: Offering up easy all mountain riding that you can count on. Weight: Average. Flex: The Swoon fits the medium flex description to a T. It’s longitudinally stiffer so you still have a stable ride down the mountain. The torsional flex between the bindings is a bit softer so you can get quick response from edge to edge. Overall it’s a pretty easy board to ride and isn’t too aggressive. The swoon has the mountain system reverse camber which has parabolic rocker which has more rocker in the center of the board and decreases the rocker to the tip and tail of the board. It’s designed for more mountain riding with the flex. Turning: Turning on the Swoon is easy to engage and an easy board to ride without being too intimidating. You could definitely just enjoy the ride without any consequences on this board.
