Intended Purpose: A popular pant in the 686 line, the Smarty Original Cargo snowboard pants offer a pant with tons of pockets and layering that’s highly waterproof and breathable. Fit: Definitely a more baggy fit on the original cargo pant but I like them a bit baggier and looser on the mountain. Appearance: In previous years I chose more bright colors but this year I ended up rocking the original cargo pant in black and tan colors. Mostly because both of these colors could go with anything in terms of jacket outerwear. I ended up spending the winter in the Northwest where neutral colors are popular and found that these were a good choice. Features: The smarty original cargo pants features 15,000mm waterproofing and 10,000mm breathability. Normally in CA or CO that would be fine, in the NW it was manageable. I made sure to clean and wash the pants to reinvigorate the DWR waterproofing in them and that helped make them last the season. For the cold days, I used the fleece inner liner but generally felt comfortable riding without them. Other features include fully taped seams, zippered thigh pocket, side cargo pockets, back pocket, zippered venting. The one […]

Intended Purpose: The Burton AK 2L Cyclic Jacket delivers a lightweight shell with Gore-Tex to stay protected from the elements. Fit: The 2L Cyclic Jacket is designed to mimic the body’s natural movements so it’s not as loose fitting as other models in the Burton line. I found the fit fine if I didn’t need any layering underneath but on the tight side if I did layer up on the colder days. I probably should have sized up for my more loose baggy comfort that I like. Appearance: I received the AK Cyclic jacket in the smurf colorway which is a mix of black, blue and grey in one jacket. It was a popular colorway since it was very neutral colors but also not too boring on the mountain. I still like the brighter designs that Burton puts out. Features: The 2L Cyclic Jacket featuresa two layer Gore-Tex performance shell and Gore-Seam that’s guaranteed to keep you dry. The waterproofing rating is 28k and breathability is 20k. The jacket features pit zips, jacket to pant interface, fully taped seams, removable waist gaiter, Riri Aquazip water-resistant zippers, fixed hood, taffeta and mesh inner lining, 2 microfleece-lined handwarmer pockets, 1 chest pocket […]

Intended Purpose: The Bonfire Banked Fleece is essential for the mountains. The jacket is designed with a fleece lining for snowboarding (or around town) and an accented hood. It’s a great collection for layering on the mountain during the cold winter or warm spring conditions. Fit: It was designed to be a layering piece in the Bonfire line so the fit hugs the body without being overly loose. It features a longer fit in my opinion so it doesn’t feel short and the sleeves are a good length. I can zip up the jacket and have good protection around the neck and head for windy days on the mountain. Appearance: I received the banked fleece as a gift from the skier in the bright red color. It’s bright and I really like the color. There are other color options like black, blue, green and grey but I really like the bright red. Features: The fleece jacket features polyester on the outside with fleece lining on the inside. It offers no waterproofing so it’s meant for being under a jacket or in warmer spring conditions. It’s a pretty minimal design with zippered pockets, nothing on the inside of the jacket. On […]

Intended Purpose: The DC Amo Jacket is an insulated snowboard jacket with 5k/5k and critically taped seams. It’s a great option for drier snowboard climates while still protecting you from wind and snow conditions. Fit: The DC Amo comes in standard fit which I thought still offered a baggy loose fitting fit to the jacket. It was definitely a box fitting kind of shape but I liked that it fit my hips and curves. Appearance: I liked the three colorway option that DC continues to use in this collection with the green, blue and grey. I liked that it offered a bright colorway to match my 686 blue pants. My only gripe with the jacket was it was a popular choice for many riders and very visible on the mountain so I ended up riding it less times than my other choices and most often on powder/snowy days on the mountain. I mostly wore the jacket with my blue pants which were a good match but I also had no problems wearing it with black pants as well. Features: The Amo jacket is stacked with features so it makes a good bang for the buck jacket. It has 5k […]

Intended Purpose: Women’s glove designed for cold weather days and guaranteed to keep you dry with Gore-Tex. Location: I wore these gloves at the SIA On-Snow in Winter Park and throughout most of the winter at Mammoth and June Mountain. Conditions: I used these gloves in very cold temperature days (-20 in Winter Park) and anytime it was snowing at Mammoth or June Mountain. They are meant for cold winter days so I wore them in those conditions. Sizing: I have typical women’s hands. I’m rocking the Verlot’s in the women’s medium size. The fit is ideal, the finger length is perfect and the gloves are snug on my hands. Color: I received these gloves in the tan color choice which is really just white and black with the majority of the glove being white. I like the look and design of them, the palm is completely black and there’s a mix of black/white design on the top of the glove. Features: The Verlot GTX gloves are a waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex glove with the guaranteed to keep you dry promise. The shell and palm is a premium goatskin leather which is really smooth and comfortble to wear. The closure […]

Intended Purpose: The Smarty Original Cargo snowboard pant started it all with the smarty series. Highly waterproof and breathable with a ton of pockets to store everything you need on the mountain. Fit: The original cargo pants have the baggy fit to them in usual 686 standard sizing. Baggier all around feel and super comfortable if you like baggy. Appearance: I really liked the bright cayan colorway on the original cargo pants and figured the bright look would go great with the darker plexus sonar softshell jacket I have. I have noticed with the amount of sunny days in CA that the lower portion of the pants have faded a touch versus the pant portion that’s hidden underneath my jacket. The inner pants can be used as pajama pants which helps when you forget yours or don’t expect to crash somewhere and have pajamas. In terms of material, the pants are nylon solid oxford so not a slick material like my last smarty pants and they work just fine for the snow conditions. Features: The smarty original cargo pants features 15,000mm waterproofing and 10,000mm breathability which worked great for Mammoth conditions this year. I wondered how the waterproofing would hold […]

Intended Purpose: The 686 Plexus collection is all about the minimalist, lightweight, shell jackets that go above your standard shell jackets. The Sonar softshell jacket continues with the minimalist features in a shell jacket but also offers 15,000k waterproofing and 10,000gm breathability. Fit: The 686 Sonar continues with the 686 fit so it will run baggy on you. I like the fit of the 686 softshell jackets because they run baggier, longer and still fit in the arm length for me. I enjoy wearing men’s jackets because I never have to worry about snow getting down my ass when I bend over and they have the length I want. The fit isn’t always there but I like how the sonar jacket fits me personally. Appearance: I took a risk when I picked the sonar jacket in herringbone because it’s the second time I’ve used herringbone in a jacket and it definitely will attract snow on the mountain. But the style and fabric I really like. People notice the fabric and always comment on it. The sonar up close is striped but from a distance it looks like a solid color. The color says it’s black herringbone but there are many […]

I love outerwear and I usually keep most of my old outerwear…although I always try to pass on gear to friends that need it. Just in case someone forgets their outerwear or needs to borrow some, I have spare stuff in my closet. Today was the big tent sale in town so I managed to score a pair of black cargo snowboard pants by 686…my favorite outerwear company. I got them for $85 so I just had to share my good luck. I also picked up the Helly Hanson jacket back in Seattle for $60…so I’m stoked because it’s another outerwear set for my collection. I posed wearing both on my back porch that looks out over Steamboat. Jacket: Helly Hansen Windbreaker (Helly Tech Watertight Tech for Wet weather conditions) Best Conditions: This is my new lightweight, pre-season sunny day jacket. Pros: Lightweight and breathable material. Cons: No vents Pants: 686 Mannual MCG 10k (10,000mm and 8,000gm) Best Conditions: I haven’t taken them out on snow yet, but for CO dry snow these pants will be my everything pants.
