When it came time to figure out where I wanted to spend my 30th birthday, it was an easy decision. I opted for a dirty thirty celebration in the actual dirt at Whistler Bike Park for a couple days to ring in the big day. It offered a chance to ride terrain I had accomplished previously and master new terrain when I reached the ripe age of 30. We arrived into Whistler on Monday June 10, ready to start the celebration at our condo. Since it was the big 30, I wanted something close to the lifts/bars and a spot where everyone had a bed. Our condo in the Carleton Lodge was sweet and I could check out the progress on the Bike Park Crankworx features from the balcony. Last year I had bought my first legit downhill bike, the Norco Aurum but unfortunately I didn’t want to deal with bringing it on the plane so thank to Whistler Mountain I was able to demo the Giant Glory bikes during my stay. Reunited with my Whistler Bike Park buddy Carrie for laps in the afternoon. She talked me into doing the GLC roll where i hit butt to tire and […]

Last season, I was lost. I was about to move all my belongings into my truck and I needed to figure out where I would call home for the winter. I reached out to my friends at Stevens Pass and mentioned I was thinking of returning to the NW and wondered if Chris Rudolph the director of marketing would give me a pass if I moved back. He told me I was always welcome back and he’d take care of me. It was a huge relief to know that I had a home mountain. On February 16, I finally I made my way to Stevens on a snowy midweek day to pick up my pass for the year from Chris. I made my way up to the marketing office and stood outside Chris’ office telling him all my big plans for the season. That I was so thankful to have the pass, that I was happy to be back, that I had just got on board with TGR to submit content for them and that I was gonna head to Snoqualmie that weekend for the first story on a contest. Chris was so stoked, he was excited I was gonna […]

It’s been a busy week in Colorado with the Dew Tour at Breckenridge but the perfect time to check out the action on the slopes and around town. This year Nike Snowboarding debuted a Streetstyle competition during the Dew Tour with urban inspired street features on Breckenridge’s Washington Street. The features were a van jib, wall ride, jersey barrier rail and dumpster feature (same style as TWS Shootout with Rome years back). Eric Beauchemin ended up taking home the big prize for the streetstyle rail jam. I missed out on seeing a lot of his hits and didn’t get any photos because dinner was calling a crew of us. But it was fun to watch the rest of the riders take to the streetstyle and check it out for a bit.

Finally the snow came back to Colorado! I left work on Saturday when it was puking snow and knew that we’d be having a powder day on Sunday which meant early to bed, early to rise! I was in the office at 6am to get snow photos and on the gondola by 7:30 to head up top for more snow photos. The top photo is the calm before the storm. Usually I take photos of other skiers and riders but I ended up becoming the snowboard model and got to make a couple powder turns of my own down Jackwacker (the only ungroomed run that morning). It was good, definitely good to be back floating on snow again. Lately I’ve been back on my Never Summer Lotus (which will be reviewed soon). It’s generally my board of choice for most mountain riding so it’s been good to test it back out on some new snow and a mix of groomers to easier park features. I like to call myself the unisex snowboard model. I noticed it back in Mammoth but in pictures of me you can’t really tell if I’m a girl or a guy. Either way I like to […]

After spending the last couple weeks in California, it was good to come back home to the sunny northwest and hit the trails at Stevens Pass Bike Park. A lot has changed since I was up in July, both trails are now fully top to bottom with tons of features jam packed into them. I met up with Dennis to spend the early afternoon lapping the bike park. It was good to have a riding buddy at Stevens since I had only been riding alone this summer. Now that the trails are noticeably longer, it’s definitely full runs of fun. I found that the Rock Crusher lower section is full of berms and table tops plus a couple new bridges along the way. The conditions are a lot drier, looser dirt than the last time. Even with the warm temps on the mountain, it wasn’t too hot while riding but I made sure to leave a water bottle at the bottom for each lap. The downside of the day was getting the flat tire on the last run. I noticed the flat right after the first couple turns at the top of the chair so I hiked the bike up […]

After spending Tuesday in the Bike Park with the bumps and bends clinic, today was about getting back on the same trails and motivating myself to continue to conquer them while working on my riding. Conditions were dry and sunny but the breeze up and down on the ride were perfect for mountain biking. I started out on Live Wire, then headed over to Gypsy for a couple laps and ended the day on easier Coaster and Easy Rider to get back to my truck. Gypsy has been a good trail for me. Super hard, heart pounding with technical rocks and really fun rideable features like rocks to bridges, rock stairs, crazy rock drops, barrels to rocks. Basically imagine a lot of rocks from small to big, sharp to dull on one run. I’ve managed to ride every feature in place except this one below. There’s something about the rocks in place especially the smaller ones that can move on you. I’ll have to redeem myself someday but thankfully I walked around it whenever I encountered it. I was having a great run on Gypsy until right before the wall ride, I was coming in to hit it and felt […]

What a difference a resort looks like in the winter and the summer. In January I was lapping snow covered trails (even got a couple powder days) and here I am in July riding different trails on the same terrain at Northstar Resort. From boots to bike pads. Once I knew I’d be spending time in Lake Tahoe, I made sure to arrange a visit to ride Northstar’s Bike Park. It’s been fun to ride new terrain and really test my skills this summer as I travel to different Bike Parks. I arrived early to the Northstar village to make sure I had time to stop into the marketing department and thank them for setting up my visit. Then I waited at the Plaza Bikes to meet up with my Bike Academy coach, Luke Sheppard, for a bumps and bends clinic. Since learning to mountain bike last summer, I learned on my own with tips and it wasn’t until this summer that I started taking clinics to get technique down and better my skills. Luke and I headed up the Tahoe Zephyr Express lift to start the day of riding. After talking about my bike park experience, we headed to […]

Having the Stevens Pass Bike Park in my backyard is a dream come true. I knew that I’d be busy organizing and re-doing the website this weekend but was counting down till I could head up to the Bike Park for an afternoon break of lap after lap to clear my head. I wasn’t sure what to expect for weekend crowds but found that even with the two trails and one chairlift, that the flow kept up during the day so lines were almost non-existent. Since it’s been sunny in Washington, the trails were a lot drier and there were less snow spots than the last time I rode on Opening Day. It’s pretty amazing scenery to see Stevens Pass in the summer. I noticed people were scenic riding the chairlift, relaxing at the top tables and watching the downhill bikers take to the mountain. The best part was Rock Crusher has an extended section which is now my favorite section of the trail. It’s a mix of huge berms, technical turns and fun rhythms to start it out.

When the Stevens Pass Bike Park opened late last summer, I was living out of state but still stoked to hear my home mountain opened lift accessed downhill trails. Since moving back to Washington earlier this winter, I’ve been anxiously awaiting for the snow to melt since Stevens closed for winter operations and today was finally the day for the Bike Park to open! Props to the hardworking Stevens team and crew to get it up and running despite the abundance of snow this season. It was an easy drive up Hwy 2 to get in some lift accessed riding this morning. Once I hit the unloaded my bike and got my ticket, I followed the clearly marked signs to get to the lift. Riding a new Bike Park is a good thing, it definitely pushes your riding to ride different dirt, trails and timing. I knew there were two trails open so I figured I would stick to the blue Rock Crusher (more difficult) trail for the day to get used to the design of the Bike Park here. I usually never push my luck on the first day of wherever I’m riding because I’d rather have my first […]
