Each season I take to the slopes to try/test/borrow snowboards to see how they perform and review them for this site. What started out as 10 boards a season has now become over 50 boards a season and I’m the only rider doing the review. This year with opportunities from multiple demo days, Board Insiders and Good Wood I found myself able to try more boards than previous years. So far I’ve rode a total of 46 2009-2010 snowboards: 35 men’s boards and 11 women’s boards. The majority of snowboard reviews were a mix of rocker/reverse camber from various companies and a smaller percentage were camber. This review will be updated throughout the season as I demo and test more 09/10 snowboards. Each review is judged by the same standard and for the majority of reviews I used my own boots (some exceptions). If you have a specific snowboard you would like to be reviewed please request it in the comment section. [singlepic id=5302 w=370 h=280 float=] About me as a snowboarder: I’m coming up on my 16th season snowboarding. I am a freerider (I ride trees, powder, steeps, groomers, natural terrain) and I ride halfpipe. I now occasionally venture […]

Location: Whistler, BC Snow Conditions: Bluebird to overcast on hardpacked snow, choppy snow and ice in spots. Setup: I rode the Drake DF1 with Union Forces and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: Camber is like coming home…it won’t die and the DF1 proved that for me. Size: 155cm Weight: average Flex: The DF1 was on the stiffer flex side for a freestyle board, but that made it stable at higher speeds and still great outside of the park for freeriding. It was a tad stiffer in the tail and torsionally stiff between the bindings. Turning: It took me some personal adjustment to turning on a camber board again, just getting used to initiating and driving the board through the turn. The DF1 has a radial sidecut so once one edge, it is very predictable and won’t force you into some extreme turn you weren’t expecting. I rode the DF1 after the Bataleon and even though the carves weren’t quite like TBT (nothing is) it still handled carving and held an edge. Stable: I didn’t encounter any stability issues with the DF1, handled speeds and choppy snow very well, good dampening in the board to absorb any rougher terrain. […]

This review was done at the Transworld Good Wood test as I tagged along with the test and tried out boards. Location: Breckenridge, Colorado Snow Conditions: Overcast with hardpacked groomers to icy groomers. Setup: I rode the Smokin Vixen with Union Force’s and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: Despite the smaller size, it held up for the mountain without sacrificing good edge hold. Size: 153cm Weight: Average Flex: The Vixen was on the softer flexing side but had a stiffer torsional flex between the bindings and softer nose and tail which meant it was still up for charging without feeling chatter under the bindings and had good dampness underfoot for absorbing some cruddy conditions. The nose and tail were softer, making it easy to press and butter in the park. The Vixen I rode had Dirt rocker which is a flat section between the bindings and gradual reverse camber from the bindings to tip and tail. The Dirt rocker was barely noticeable, rode very similiar to camber for carving but with the extra bonuses of rocker, easier to press. Turning: This was where the Vixen excelled for the all mountain freestyle board, it was still able to carve […]

This review was done through Board Insiders and will be featured on their site as a review with video of me explaining the board and riding it. I’ll update this link to that when it goes live Location: Stevens Pass, Washington Snow Conditions: Snowing with powder on runs, some groomed areas on day 1 of testing with Board Insiders. Setup: I rode the Roxy Envi with Union Forces/Rome Shifts and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: I love riding a board my size meant for women who ride hard, huge smile on my face everytime I get on these boards. Size: 157cm Weight: average Flex: A stiffer flex longitudinally with the nose being raised and tad softer so you can float easier in the powder. There was some torsional give which made the groomers not too difficult to turn quickly, but definitely a more aggressive women’s ride in terms of flex. It really handled the northwest riding conditions, crud, ice under pow and powder. Out of the women’s boards it handled the best for freeriding and charging, comparable to some men’s boards I’ve ridden. Turning: The envi was responsive edge to edge, good torsional give and you could power through […]
