Despite the down economy, the underdog companies in snowboarding certainly have the upper hand and are finding themselves in positions to bring back companies or launch new companies. The heartbeats of these companies lie in the mountains and it’s only a matter of time before they start beating again. Compatriot Snowboards began in 2002 with a focus on handcrafting freeride/big mountain freestyle boards and is now re-launching the brand after some downtime. For 2009-2010 they will be offering a limited run of high-end boards built in the United States. “It certainly seems like the right time for this brand to resurface,” says new Owner and Sales Manager Rick Hansen, “Retailers are still looking for unsullied brands that can offer something unique and meaningful to their core consumer, and many of our customers are still riding the product Compatriot built for them 2 or 3 seasons ago. That’s not only a testament to the durability of the snowboards themselves, but also to the longevity of our cultural mission.” The announcement of their pro team is still on the way and the launch of their website is coming up but here’s a sneak peak to their board lineup they have in store […]

Each season I take to the slopes to try/test/borrow snowboards to see how they perform and review them for this site. What started out as 10 boards a season has now become over 50 boards a season and I’m the only rider doing the review. This year with opportunities from multiple demo days, Board Insiders and Good Wood I found myself able to try more boards than previous years. So far I’ve rode a total of 46 2009-2010 snowboards: 35 men’s boards and 11 women’s boards. The majority of snowboard reviews were a mix of rocker/reverse camber from various companies and a smaller percentage were camber. This review will be updated throughout the season as I demo and test more 09/10 snowboards. Each review is judged by the same standard and for the majority of reviews I used my own boots (some exceptions). If you have a specific snowboard you would like to be reviewed please request it in the comment section. [singlepic id=5302 w=370 h=280 float=] About me as a snowboarder: I’m coming up on my 16th season snowboarding. I am a freerider (I ride trees, powder, steeps, groomers, natural terrain) and I ride halfpipe. I now occasionally venture […]

In June, I did a successful Birthday twitter giveaway where people tracked me down with twitter clues and the first person who found me won an 09-10 Never Summer Circuit-R snowboard. People mentioned how great it would be to have that same giveaway in other cities that I traveled to, so I set out in June to see what company would be willing to offer an 09-10 snowboard and be part of the shayboarder.com twitter giveaway fun. Portland is the next city I visit this year and the perfect choice for another shayboarder twitter hunt. The fine folks at Mervin Manufacturing offered up a 09-10 Lib Tech Skate Banana to make the hunt truly Northwest so it’s game on in Portland.
With my 26th birthday rapidly approaching on June 12th, I thought how great would it be to have a giveaway on my birthday. The fine crew at Never Summer was up for donating a board to my Birthday giveaway and then I just needed to come up with the giveaway idea. South of the North did a really fun Easter Hunt earlier this year, but with my giveaway there’s only one snowboard so I tweaked the idea and came up with this! [singlepic id=4464 w=400 h=300 float=] On June 12th, 2009 when I turn 26 years old I’ll be spending my birthday in Denver, Colorado to take in a Rockies vs Mariners game that evening but earlier that day…I’m free to do whatever I want. So in order to get this free brand new 09-10 Never Summer snowboard, you’ve gotta find me and sing me Happy Birthday! At noon (MST) on June 12th, I’ll start putting clues on twitter.com, clues that will help you track down the location where I will be at and once you find me and sing me happy birthday (it’s only fitting), you get to have a brand new 09-10 Never Summer snowboard. If you want […]
