Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy groomers. Setup: I rode the Smokin MIP with Union Team bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 155cm. First Impression: Wow this board isn’t just for park riding Weight: Average Flex: I was expecting a freestyle board in terms of the flex but the MIP was on the stiffer side for freestyle delivering a board that can handle the mountain. Torsionally in the mid range for flex, not super soft but not stiff. It was average edge to edge but once on edge, you had no problem with stability. Longitudinally, softer nose and stiffer tail making tail presses not as easy but easy to get the nose press up, stiffer under the feet so you felt really comfortable on landings and freeriding. The smoking MIP features anti-rocker so it’s completely flat throughout the entire effective edge and is catch free. Turning: The longer effective edge really did it for the MIP, just made it a smooth board to turn and carve with down the mountain instead of only doing quick turns. The long turns felt really comfortable and locked into from the transition to the end of the turn. It wasn’t […]

Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy groomers. Setup: I rode the DC Devun with Union Team bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 154cm. First Impression: You’d swear you are riding a camber board Weight: Lighter than average Flex: It goes without saying but if you’d seen Devun ride, you know this board is gonna be on the stiffer end for all mountain freestyle dominance. It’s a stiffer flex longitudinally that helps keep it stable on the mountain, torsionally in the medium range but still very quick edge to edge and a lighter snowboard. The devun has a camber core profile where they profiled the wood core with a camber shape outside of the bindings to give their anti-camber collection more pop and control. The anti-camber on the devun has a flat stable platform between the feet, and transitions into anti-camber outside the bindings. Turning: Quick response on the mountain despite the stiffer flex, it rallies on turns and carving. Surprisingly very quick on short turns, from edge to edge and still a lot of good stability on the longer turns. It’s a predictable ride but you can get aggressive on it, just carving up the slopes […]

Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy groomers. Setup: I rode the Burton Sherlock with Burton Cobrashark bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 154cm. First Impression: I can see why this board is so popular…it’s so damn easy to ride. Weight: Average Flex: Sherlock was softer in the nose and tail of the board with stiffer flex underfoot that gave you good stability on landings and freeriding. Torsionally had good give so you got quick edge response from one turn to the next. Longitudinally a mix of flex but overall medium. The Flying V is reverse camber, V-rocker between the feet, underneath your feet are camber zones and rocker outside your feet to the tip and tail. Turning: If there is one board that’s just easy to turn and ride, this was it for the demos. I can see why a lot of riders would like it, it practically turns for you. Once on edge, you won’t catch or get hooked up in a turn. I liked quicker shorter turns better on the board but it did handle long drawn out S turns down the mountain. Stable: The softer flex did better than expected when going faster […]

Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy groomers. Setup: I rode the Burton Joystick with Burton Cartel bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 154cm. First Impression: Stiffer than the Hero but with a similar riding style Weight: Average Flex: The joystick had a noticeably stiffer flex than the hero but that’s a good thing, it delivers up a quiver killer board. Stiffer tail that holds a lot of power in the board, softer nose than tail and longitudinally has medium stiffness to it. Torsionally some give but not a soft board torsionally. It’s poppy, snappy and lively through the core of the board. The nose and tail are scooped so butters/presses are still easy despite the flex. The V-rocker is a 3 point rocker, between the bindings and on the nose and tail at the contact points making it less likely to catch and with the rocker between the feet, easier to press. Turning: Easy turn initation on the joystick and you can pop from one turn into the next, especially powering through on the tail of the board. On the turning, I found long and short turns good but also the board was just ready for […]

Location: Mammoth, California Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy groomers Setup: I rode the Rome Pusher with Rome 390 Bosses and my Vans Veil boots size 8. First Impression: Last year the pusher was a favorite of mine and continues to be that solid all mountain board the second you get on it. Size: 159cm Weight: heavier than average Flex: The pusher is that do everything board but definitely on the stiffer side for all mountain, with a stiffer nose and tail so you have a stable ride down the mountain but with a softer flex between the bindings for quicker edge to edge turning. From the last time I rode it, the 159 seemed stiffer than the 156 which had more playfulness. The rocker on the Pusher is rome’s reverse free rocker which is reverse camber extends from beyond the inserts with straight camber in the nose and tail. Turning: When I first rode the pusher, it stood out on how it handled in turns. It held an edge so smoothe and carved so good, especially for longer drawn out turns. It had snap to it, so you could push in and out of turns and for those laying a […]

Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy groomers. Setup: I rode the Burton Blender with Burton Scribe EST bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 154cm. First Impression: Reminds me of the lipstick with V-rocker but with a twin shape and flex. Weight: Average Flex: The Blender had a softer flex to it, torsionally it was on the softer side so very easy to go from edge to edge. Longitudinally the stiffer flex seemed like it was underfoot and towards to nose/tail but not much stiffer. The blender is a V-rocker, so a 3-stage rocker with one rocker between the feet and rockers outside of the foot to raise up the contact points. Turning: The mid-spoon on the blender gives it a easy transition from edge to edge since you can easily roll it from turn to turn. I liked shorter radius turns on the blender better than the longer radius turns where it felt like the board was always wanting quicker turns. It gripped on edge in some icy spots and didn’t wash out. Stable: For a softer park board it definitely is not your charging speed board. I noticed on some bumpy terrain, it didn’t […]

Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy groomers. Setup: I rode the Burton Nug with Malavita bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 146cm. First Impression: Holy tinyness…10cm less than what you normally ride Weight: average. Flex: I was expecting a board similar to the signal park rocker, just straight up soft but the nug definitely still offers up the mountain to you. The flex had good torsionally flex so you still had quick edge to edge response and the smaller size made maneuverability so easy on the board. The overall flex longitudinally, it rode like a longer board when going faster and building up speed. The Nug features Burton’s V-rocker with a center rocker between the feet and additional rockers outside each foot that lift the tail and tip completely off the snow. The V-rocker definitely suits the Nug and gives it more of that park jib inspired feeling. Turning: The nug was easy to get on edge and maneuver from edge to edge down the mountain. Turns were quick when you wanted them but also you could make long drawn out turns and hold it steady the entire carve. The nug definitely was believable for riding […]

First Impression: Still remains that all mountain women’s board that you can take anywhere. Weight: average. Flex: Right in the middle of the road for flex, overall medium flex and despite riding a smaller size the flex still holds up on the 151cm. Torsionally softer between the bindings and longitudinally stiffer from the nose to tail. It can handle the mountain, park to powder and you’ll be able to ride it all no problem. The stiffer nose lets it handle charging and riding through the chop while the softer tail gives you butter playfulness. The Infinity features RC technology which is reverse camber, rocker and camber, rocker between the feet and camber just outside of the bindings. Setup: I rode the GNU Riders Choice with my Union bastardized bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 154.5cm. First Impression: C2BTX does the Riders Choice good. Weight: tad heavier than average. Flex: The Riders Choice is meant to be a stiffer board that handles aggressive freestyle lines and landings. It’s stiffer both torsionally and longidinally but with a good amount of pop. Despite the torsional stiffness it wasn’t hard to get quick response from edge to edge and the overall stiffness made it perfect in the powder. It felt comfortable from the beginning. The Riders Choice features C2BTX which is banana rocker between the bindings and camber from the inserts to the contact points. Turning: The last time I rode the Riders Choice in 08-09 the mtx was too grippy but that wasn’t the case with this board, it turned on a dime easily and held an edge without being too aggressive into the carve. On the hardpacked spots, it was natural just to ride without thinking about it, no catching and no overally grippy feeling. Shorter turns were easy to get […]

Weight: average Flex: The formula’s flex is a very forgiving flex, softer torsionally so the rider eases into turns and tad stiffer from the bindings to the nose/tail with a longer nose. Overall the board is medium flex, it’s not a soft board and it’s not a stiff board. It handles the mountain but it is still very much a beginner-intermediate progression board, you could ride this board on day 1 or day 100 of your riding career and always feel comfortable on it. Turning: It was an easy forgiving ride from the second I stepped on it, just all around handled each turn and delivered initiation easier to the rider. The formula features a tri-radial sidecut which allows for all options for turning, whether you want a quick arc turn or just laying it out […]
