Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy conditions. Setup: I rode the Burton Feelgood Flying V with Burton Diode bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 155cm. First Impression: Continues to be a great board for all mountain female riders Weight: Average. Flex: Softer torsional flex between the bindings so the board is super easy to turn but stiffer flex underneath and towards the tip/tail for stability for freeriding. The carbon I-beam definitely helps for the pop and stability so you can charge the mountain. The Feelgood comes with camber or flying V, I rode the Flying V model with reverse camber. V-rocker between the feet and underneath the feet is camber zones and rocker towards the tip and tail. Turning: The Feelgood has always been a responsive carving board and quick to get edge to edge while riding. On the softer snow, it really held an edge into each turn and offered up a good mix of turns without any catches or problems. On shorter turns, it was quick and nimble. On the icy spots, I had an issue with the board holding an edge and not slipping out but that was the only issue with it […]

Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy conditions. Setup: I rode the Burton Lip-Stick with Burton Stilletto bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 149cm. First Impression: Flat Top definitely suits the Lip-Stick! Weight: Average. Flex: Now that the Lip-Stick is a Flat Top, the board still offers a fun playful park flex for the ladies. It’s softer on the nose and tail where you get the playfulness of rocker but with the stiffer flex between the bindings to give you stability on the flat profile. Easier torsional flex to make turning easier. The Lip-Stick LTD for next year comes with Flat Top which is a flat profile between the feet for better stability and a tail/tip kick up with early rise for playfulness. Turning: The Lip-Stick was quick and on point with turning. The Flat Top still let it be an easy board to flex and maneuver into each turn. The Lip-Stick could handle the longer drawn out S turns but also was very good torsional flex but quick shorter turns. Stable: This is where the Flat Top excels from previous years. The board can handle and grip on the icy hardpacked conditions despite being a park softer […]

Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy conditions. Setup: I rode the Burton Aftermath with Burton Malavita Restricted bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 155cm. First Impression: I was warned this board is aggressive and stiff for a park board but dang it’s fun! Weight: Average. Flex: For a park board, the Aftermath is on the stiffer end of freestyle riding. It’s built for jumps, hard landings and can handle the freeriding. Stiffer nose/tail and underfoot the bindings with a torsionally softer flex between the bindings. The Aftermath is traditional camber and rides consistenly and aggressively with it. Turning: The Aftermath was consistent on carving thanks to camber and really just a feel good board for turning. It could handle long radius turns much better in my opinion, shorter turns weren’t as quick but still capable just took a bit more to maneuver the board into them. Stable: The stiffer park flex and camber helped the board for stability on the mountain. Conditions were icy to hardpacked and the Aftermath had no problem holding an edge on the icy spots. On jumps, the board took landings with ease especially when the snow started getting bumped out. Pop: Full […]

Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy conditions. Setup: I rode the Burton Nug with Burton Scribe bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 142cm. First Impression: As long as I don’t look down, I feel pretty good on this thing and it’s just plain fun to ride. Weight: Average. Flex: The Nug offers up the mountain in a smaller size and playfulness in big doses. The Nug is a medium flex board but with the softer nose and tail combined with V-rocker and stiffer flex underfoot, you get a board that’s playful but can still handle turns and the rest of the mountain. Torsionally it’s a bit softer which makes it easy to get quick response for each turn. The Nug has V-rocker, a centered rocker between the feet and additional rockers outside each foot that lift the tail and tip completely off the snow. Turning: Handled with quickness and response for shorter radius turns while still able to do a long drawn out turn down the slopes. The effective edge on the board rides like a longer board so you don’t feel like you are on a board that can’t turn. The frostbite edges did good holding […]

Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy conditions. Setup: I rode the Burton Fortress with Burton Escapades bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 154cm. First Impression: Camber compliments the Fortress with a charging handling for the whole mountain. Weight: Lighter than average. Flex: The Fortress rode longitudinally stiffer with a slight torsional softness to make it capable of quick turns. The flex is symmetrical from tip to tail for a balanced ride and rode just like that down the mountain. The board is lighter than average but still offers good pop and longitudinally stiffer flex for stability on the mountain. The Fortress is traditional camber for a continuous and consistent ride down the mountain. Turning: The Fortress offered up consistent turns down the mountain. Short radius were easy to manevuer with the softer torsional flex and longer drawn out turns felt just as fine. Quick stops were no problem and you could definitely spray up snow at someone very easily with this board and the handling. Stable: I really think the Fortress did the best as speed and stability thanks to the camber. By the time I got on the board conditions were really icy and bumpy throughout […]

Setup: I rode the Arbor Coda with my Union Team and Bent Metal Mortal bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 155cm. First Impression: The Mountain System gave the Coda a lot more life Weight: Average. Flex: The Coda is built for all mountain riding so the flex overall is on the medium side. It’s not as soft as the park boards in the Arbor line nor as stiff as the freeride boards. Good center of the range on flex. The torsional flex is responsive and softer so you get responsive edge to edge turns from the board and longitudinally it’s a tad stiffer so you have stability while riding. The nose is softer with a stiffer tail so you can still power through powder and freeriding. The Coda features Arbor’s Mountain System Technology designed to ride the mountain with grip-tech, parabolic rocker, directional twin shaping, power ply topsheet, toro tips and rocker flex. The mountain system reverse camber which has parabolic rocker which has more rocker in the center of the board and decreases the rocker to the tip and tail of the board. Setup: I rode the Zion Wonk with my Union Team bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 152cm. First Impression: The Wonk’s full of fun without paying a ton. Weight: Average. Flex: The Wonk is built for all mountain jibbing so it’s on the softer flexing side of the spectrum but it’s not a noodle in any means. The flex felt evenly throughout the board and with softer nose/tail so presses were easy. Torsionally softer with the thinner between the inserts so it engaged quickly but still a tad stiffer underfoot to handle the rest of the mountain. The Wonk features a negative camber profile between the bindings and a slight camber from the bindings out to the contact points. Turning: Easy to engage on edge thanks to the reverse camber and a multi-radius turning that helped keep the board engaging through carved turns. It was fine on both short and long radius turns. The edgehold was great, the hardpacked icy conditions didn’t stand a chance against this board and it held better than I thought it would. Stable: I can now see my […]

Each year, the goal is the same. To ride, review and describe how a snowboard rides to the average snowboarder. These aren’t boards put through Alaska powder riding or 80 foot jumps, these are boards ridden at resorts in varying conditions and reviewed by the same standards each time. Each season I hit the slopes to review the boards you want and as the only reviewer, you know what to expect when the review gets posted up. This year I was able to borrow boards from brands, ride demo days and ride a ton of boards before they came out to the public. If you want to know more about how the reviews are done, check out my behind the reviews post. So far I’ve rode a total of 38 2011-2012 snowboards: 31 men’s boards and 7 women’s boards. The majority of snowboard reviews were a mix of rocker/reverse camber from various companies and a smaller percentage were camber. This review will be updated throughout the season as I demo and test more 11/12 snowboards. Each review is judged by the same standard and for the majority of reviews I used my own boots. If you have a specific snowboard you […]

Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Mixture of hardpacked icy conditions to soft packed slushy conditions. Setup: I rode the Never Summer Premier F1 with my Union Team bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 159cm. First Impression: The Premier has always been that board for freeriders to the core. Weight: Average. Flex: The Premier F1 is on the stiffer side for flex and comparable to the Raptor in the line-up. It’s a tad softer on the nose, with a stiffer powerful tail that delivers up more response from the tail end of the board. Between the bindings there’s a softer torsional flex so it still delivers up response from edge to edge. It’s pretty good on the dampening, most stuff you throw its way it won’t let you get bumped around. The Premier F1 features RC technology which is reverse camber, rocker and camber, rocker between the feet and camber just outside of the bindings. Turning: There are many types of turns a board can make depending on the sidecut and effective edge. While the Raptor gives you quick aggressive turns that are less forgiving, the Premier F1 is the board that delivers a consistent carve with no surprises […]

Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked morning snow to softpacked slushy afternoon snow. Setup: I rode the YES Big City with Union Team bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 156cm. First Impression: Don’t let the graphics or name fool you. This board is not meant for city riders, it’s an aggressive mountain board. Weight: Average Flex: The Big City is described as a medium flex but it’s on the stiffer flex end compared to most boards. It’s a directional twin with a stiffer longitdinally and torsional flex. It has a softer nose to help with float in powder. It’s overall on the stiffer end for a freestyle board. The Big City has freeride camrock which means camber between the bindings then more rocker in the nose of the board for added float, less rocker in the tail of the board. The freeride camrock is also setback on the board. Turning: This is an aggressive snowboard. It’s quick, unforgiving and needs a rider who knows how to ride. The sidecut is very snappy and will want quickness each time you lay it on edge. It was definitely a board that you can’t go easy on, it requires no lazyness […]
