The plan was to hit St Mary’s Glacier this weekend but we knew Breck had features set up and was less of a drive/hike to get to. I met up in Frisco with everyone (Lauren, Adrian and Scott), we packed our gear into the truck and headed back to 4th of July Bowl on the top of Breck for a shred session. When we arrived today there were more features set up. Now we had the tube, a double barrel rail, a metal pole, plastic tube set up on the log and a foam barrel used to cover the snowblowing hoses on the mountain.
Snow above 10,000 feet does stick around in the summer and it’s not hard to ride every month of the season if you are willing to hike or drive to find it. At the top of Peak 10 in Breckenridge is what’s known as 4th of July bowl, a riding location that consistently has year round shredable snow with 4WD access. Today was the day to finally enjoy the leftover snow from this season. I left Steamboat early this morning to meet friends in Frisco and head to our summer shred destination for a day of on-snow shredding. We weren’t sure how far we could make it up (last check the road wasn’t driveable to the top yet) but we were ready to ride whatever snow we found. [singlepic id=5141 w=400 h=300 float=] Our crew consisted of Lauren, Adrian, Scott, Eric and myself. My truck was the designated vehicle to suit the 4wd road and unfortunately Scott and Eric took the back of the truck for the bumpy rock climbing ride up to 12,000 ft (or more). When we arrived we found more people up there, some hiking to the top of peak 9 to ride down and […]

The calendar says it’s summer, your friends say it’s summer but your mind and body are still itching for winter…this is the post for you. Whether it’s riding year round or just taking a couple laps in the summer…there is always snow to be found, enjoyed and shredded. In my own personal experiences, I’ve spent many summers at Hood and now in Colorado I have found spots where snow is year round to continue the shredding. Here are some options to partake in the summer shred on. [singlepic id=5069 w=214 h=320 float=] Mt Hood, Oregon It’s the mecca of summer snowboarding. To spend a summer at Hood gives you a full appreciation of life…you learn how to live cheaply, shred everyday and meet people who are as devoted as you. There are a couple ways to do up Hood in the summer. Things to know about summer at Hood. Know the lifties, they can be your worse nightmare or your best friend…they control who gets access to the shred. Early morning is ice and racers, afternoon is slush and snowboarders. If you get up on the mountain before 10am, you better have magne traction or really good edges. Drinking in […]

I stayed over in Breckenridge, so it was an easy choice to head back up to the last of the snowpack today. Last night in Summit County a storm came through but no new snow on the mountain. It did however blow the barrel down the valley but we managed to get it back up to the snow. A variety of people came up to enjoy the snow, one guy was nice enough to take the trash that had been left over the summer. It was cool to see that everyone whether skier or snowboarder was at different levels, you had the people working on their spins jibbing or jumping but also people that were still learning rails and airs. It was a cloudy day with some sun but it did get more windy up there. The clouds and sunshine made it so there was great lighting. My dog Capita just hanging out enjoying the snow, she only ran after 2 people and got a close call but she’s getting better. Maybe it’s just me, but I noticed today that the snow is really not-white anymore. Alot more rocks showing through that are there to hold […]

I was bummed that last weekend I didn’t bring my gear to ride Breck’s 4th of July bowl, but I made plans to be there again this weekend with my gear and be able to call it my first day on snow for the 08-09 season. There’s something to say about the people who are up in the summers that won’t put their snowboards away…it’s a different vibe, different breed of people that don’t require a great snow day to have fun. It’s about continuing a passion when you are not supposed to. I may not be a jibber or park rat, but I still enjoy snowboarding even if it’s hiking the same 50 foot section. The conditions suck…it’s not the best snow but to be able to ride during a month that is not winter…is something more than epic snow conditions. I made the trek down from Steamboat for the day, even brought along my dog Capita for the adventure. It was her first time being around snowboarding…so I wasn’t sure how she would take it. She’s a snow lover at heart and named after a snowboard company, so I expect her to be. She did have fun […]

I made my way down to Summit County for the weekend, with a variety of events going on to attend like Oktoberfest and Working Out the Kinks premiere in Denver. Of course…plans changed and ended up missing both of those but spent Saturday on snow taking photos. It had snowed in Colorado less than a week ago so there was still some fresh snow to be enjoyed but not really rideable except in the area where snow has stuck around all summer. I really wasn’t expecting to snowboard, so I didn’t bring down my gear for the weekend. But luckily I brought a camera and that made me the photog for the day. It was sunny and I forgot sunscreen so I’m paying for that mistake today…I’m burnt crispy in the face. Saturday was a beautiful day, really warm out and surprisingly warmer as you got higher up the drive to Breck. I had 6 people packed in my truck for the drive up. We had to park the truck lower than where the rails are set up because of snow on the road. It was a great day cause there were two other cars when we got there and […]

After spending yesterday at St Mary’s Glacier and me not wanting to leave Summit County, we headed up to ride the snow that is left at Breck’s 4th of July bowl. You can actually drive up to the top and park right by the snow, but it’s a rocky road and 4WD is necessary. This is the view from the top today. Luckily I drive a Toyota Tacoma and it does the job…even when I doubt it. Here’s the crew today: Lauren hiding behind TJ changing his pants and K.There are generally rails set up and today there was one left and a couple small logs to play around with. I parked the truck about 20 feet from the snow, so there wasn’t much hiking involved today. The girls: Lauren and myself. TJ setting up a jump within the view of being in the clouds. I spent most of my time being the photographer for the day, which is quite fine with me. I did make a couple turns on the snowpack and it was fun. The snow was soft and dirty but less bumpy than St. Mary’s Glacier yesterday. Lauren riding the rail We brought some […]
