Each year the crew from Mervin’s Denver office takes to A-Basin for a day on snow with drinks, BBQ and games. Once I knew the date, I marked it off on my calendar and planned for the day off from work to come enjoy the festivities with friends. I made my way into Denver last night to stay at Dan’s house, stop by NS this morning and then head to A-Basin for a late morning/afternoon of shredding. Capita (my dog) came along for the ride. I arrived at A-Basin with enough luck to find a parking spot close to the tents and join in the festivities which included good drinks, food and people. [singlepic id=9013 w=400 h=300 float=] We had a great crew at the party, I was able to meet up with my friends from 720 Boardshop in Denver (Lauren, Adrian, Erik, Scott), good friends like K and new friends like Scott and Brett. Snowboarding really does unite a lot of different people into one happy place and I had a great day because of the people I was with. I also was bummed that these are people I’ll miss when I move.
It was a much needed ride day before the family arrives in town for my surgery, so I headed to A-Basin to finally end the season there. It was great timing since today the Lib Tech Denver office peeps were having their end of season shred party on the mountain which is always a good time.
My last day at A-Basin has arrived and today was a great day to end out the season. I stayed in Breckenridge last night and scoped up the halfpipe but it’s no longer rideable so that wasn’t an option for today. This morning I met up with the crew (Lauren, Adrian and Xavier) for breakfast in Silverthorne and then headed to the mountain. Sporting the new Neff soft shell with spray paint splatter print [singlepic id=4868 w=300 h=400 float=] We spent the day lapping park and having fun on the runs. There really isn’t much in terms of great snow anymore so it was definitely a jump the rocks kind of day. I spent most of the day ollie’ing whatever I could find and I followed Adrian to a good section of rocks to jump. Xavier threw down his wildcat backflip which I took sequence shots of, here’s the GIF that should make it more animated. Yesterday I convinced Adrian to try my Signal Park Rocker and he’s still riding it. Here’s him on the down-flat-down box. I have a feeling I’m not getting it back.
A-Basin continues their operations till June 7th this year, but my time riding there is winding down as this is my last weekend on snow. Once I’m cleared from surgery I’ll be riding Breck’s 4th of July Bowl and St. Mary’s Glacier in Colorado but this is it for A-Basin. At 9am, the snow was already turning to slush if that gives a good representation of the conditions right now. Super slushy/bumpy but still lots of fun to be snowboarding in May!
A-Basin is the last resort standing in Colorado now and quite the popular resort for a mix of snowboarding and hanging on the beach (drinking and BBQ’ing). It’s a 1.5 drive from Steamboat so I made the trek to meet up with Lauren, Adrian and Xavier to ride for the day. The sunshine came out on the mountain with some cloud coverage and A-Basin has held up with their snowfall this season. Hardpacked and icy in the morning, slush in the afternoon. [singlepic id=5075 w=400 h=300 float=] I made the rounds with the occasional shayboarder sticker [singlepic id=5076 w=400 h=300 float=] We made a couple laps and I found I was capable of hitting the mini park…always a plus for me to find rails that don’t scare me. For the whole month of May, A-Basin is putting on Saturday Rail Jams. They are free to enter and are a jam format of skiers and snowboarders hitting two rails. We convinced Lauren and Xavier to enter the rail jam and I headed down the mountain to grab the camera to take photos. [singlepic id=5077 w=400 h=267 float=] Almost time for the jam session to begin [singlepic id=5078 w=400 h=267 […]

The morning started out at A-Basin where I met up with Becky and Bru to ride for the day. We expected that A-Basin would be less crowded than the openings of Breck and Keystone. It is a bummer that Vail Resorts only allowed their employees to ride at A-basin when Breck and Keystone were open. However we were wrong, it was very busy and with the 2nd chair not open yet by 10am…lines were bad on the 1st chair. Becky and Bru riding down A-Basin After one run on the lower half (not even second chair open yet), waiting in line for a good 45 minutes we decided to head over to Keystone to see what was up there. Keystone is less than 10 minutes from A-Basin to easy quick drive over and find parking. We walked to the new Gondola in River Run and as we came around the corner, we had to laugh at how long the line was for the gondola. Here’s us at the end of the line, it went around the corner to the right in front of the gondola.
Today was closing day here at A-Basin Colorado. It’s June and last night it snowed 2 inches. I understand this is Colorado, higher elevation and I should be used to it…but it still amazes me. K and I arrived at A-Basin pretty early to find that it snowed more than a light flurry, it was busy but we managed to find good parking and we found out we should have slept a bit later till the snow softened up. I sported a hoodie for the first time this year on snow…I later changed into my jacket to protect me against the wind. The mountain was busy. Luckily a lot of people spent more time in the parking lot enjoying BBQing and drinking over riding the mountain. Lift lines weren’t too bad since A-Basin opened the Norway chairlift, helping with congestion at Pali chair today. K and I took a morning run on the upper mountain…just to check it out. The snow was sheet ice with the new snow from last night on top. It was not very fun to ride on. The lower mountain was a better option for the morning, there wasn’t much ice and the new snow overnight […]

It’s the closing weekend here at A-Basin so I came down to enjoy some last turns with friends. None of the Steamboat friends made it down so I hit up the mountain with K and TJ. The snow is still holding up but we got first glimpses of brush showing through. It is heavy and slushy. It was warm out with sunny skies and quick moving clouds occasionally. Luckily there are ways to ride through brush and other debris on the mountain. TJ showing off the skill. Pali chair was packed with long lines so we stuck to exhibition lift where we could make laps with no lines. Lower mountain was where the ponds were coming through in some spots…not the best pond skimming but a little mini shred through it. Jumping a creek Future pond skimming spot Last night I stopped through Winter Park to pick up a snowboard from the Atomic Rep Jay. You’re looking at Atomic’s reverse camber prototype. I spent today on it and I’ll be riding it tomorrow to check it out. The graphics are not real as well. So keep on the look out for more info about this board.
Shredding Part 1 Tom and I made the trek down this morning to ride A-Basin. It finally seems like spring riding now, slushy and sunny everyday! We pulled up to A-Basin and even the crowds are dying down meaning you can park in the main lot after 10am. The snow coverage is holding up but more rocks are coming through. The snow has the brown tint showing through. The terrain park is still holding up Tom on the rail Skiers and Snowboards are in the same game…loving snow. I have never understood the people who think its skiers vs snowboarders on the mountain. Ride with who you have fun with…regardless of the plank they are on (I do wonder about snowblades…but hey…to each his own).
