In my constantly moving chatbox, Pierce asked “how do you meet all these people I would love to be as involved in the snowboard community as you are.” The snowboard industry is small, seriously smaller than you can imagine. If you know one person, chances are through them you know, or can potentially know, a lot more people. It just takes an introduction or communication to establish a relationship. When I did Industry Profiles last summer, a lot of people spoke about the snowboard industry saying that “it’s not what you know, but who you know.” Six degrees of separation says you are only six steps away from everyone, in snowboarding I think it’s more like three steps…just gotta get out and make the step. The most noticeable thing for how I’ve met people is networking. There are lots of words for it: make contacts, meet and greet, schmooze, mingle. My friend Bruce once told me I was really good at networking because I stay connected to people, constantly in contact and a hub of information. Really it comes down to making connections. I’ve found that anyone I email, I will try to meet in person especially when it comes […]

Industry Profile: Okemo Snowboard Clinician K.C. Gandee Photographer Erica MarciniecPhoto courtesy of KC Gandee Shay: So tell us about yourself? KC: I’m a 30 year old snowboarder from the suburbs of Washington, DC. I spent 8 years teaching people to ride at Massanutten, VA and moved to Vermont in 2003 at my wife’s, Courtney, suggestion. Winter is longer in Vermont! I spent 4 years on the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI) Snowboard Team working with members, sponsors and other industry types to try to make snowboarding and learning to snowboard better. I work and ride at Okemo Mountain Resort in VT. Shay: What is your job title? KC: I wear several hats: Okemo Recreation Manager, Okemo Ski and Ride School Clinician, AASI-E Board of Examiners. Shay: Did your parents question your job choice? KC: When I dropped out of college to teach in 1997 they did. After 2 years of fighting about it, they saw that I was really happy and decided to support my decision. It’s been a much warmer relationship since then! They were also very supportive when I decided to go back to school to finish in 2002. Shay: What was your first set up? KC: […]

I wrote this article back in 2004 after having knee surgery and having to find online forums to keep my sanity from missing snowboarding. It was published in the PSIA-NW Snowsport Instructor Spring 2004 issue. Snowboarding has been a huge part of my life. I’ve spent winters devoted to improving my riding and helping others improve. This season ended after I damaged my ACL and I made the decision to get surgery and focus on being ready for next season. Unable to teach on the mountain and be around the community of riders who have been a major part of my life, I searched for some way to stay involved in snowboarding when I couldn’t be on the snow. [singlepic id=7287 w=400 h=300 float=] What I found were online snowboard communities. These communities range from Seattle and the northwest area, to the instructors on AASI to the entire world. There are sites that include both skiers and snowboarders and sites only directed to one of those groups. Here’s a list of the best: -aasi.org (our own instructors page for snowboarders and skiers in United States) -snowboardseattle.com (Puget Sound snowboarding and skiing community). -nwsnow.com (Washington state for snowboarders and skiers). -snowboard.com […]
