Snowboarding in Alaska should be on everyone’s bucket list. The flight up is one of the most scenic, awe-inspiring journeys and the ride down the terrain that Alaska offers is even better. Whether it’s in-bounds at a resort or in the backcountry – there’s truly terrain for all ability levels. I’ve already done the backcountry snowboarding in Alaska during my Tailgate Alaska stint so I was very content with staying in-bounds just to explore Alyeska Resort on this trip. View from the tram looking over Girdwood I hopped a flight late Friday after the workweek, checked in my snowboard gear, and landed in Anchorage. Just a short drive later, I was arriving at the Alyeska Resort Hotel to start my weekend snowboard trip. I was traveling solo so I was very glad to have the help of the Alyeska staff to show me around the resort over the weekend. Woke up early Saturday to find blue skies, groomed corduroy, and a smile on my face. Top of the chairlift My tour guide around the mountain was Nicole who did a great job telling me about the terrain, snow this year, mountain features and what I had to check out while […]

What can you do with a 12 hour visit to Anchorage? It turns out a lot! It all started with a three hour flight on Alaska Airlines from Seattle to Anchorage, Alaska arriving just after 8am. My travel companion was the adventurous Nikki who braved the cold temps of Alaska with me. Departing in the dark and seeing the sunrise at 35,000 feet is always worth the journey. I captured the morning glow with a hyperlapse on the AlaskaAir instagram which you can see here. After getting our rental car for the day, we hit the open road and followed the Seward Highway to explore the outer regions of Anchorage. I had remembered Portage Bay from a past visit so we headed in that general direction. The best part of the roadtrip was the fall colors on the highway. Combine those with the snowcapped peaks…and it was photo moments the entire drive. With the cold temps, we did have to adjust to the temperature difference from 70s in Seattle to 30-40s in Anchorage. Even though it was the offseason for visiting, we still were able to explore some great places like the Portage Bay Glacier and Girdwood. We skipped the […]

It’s pretty extraordinary to explore amazing locations thanks to my job at Alaska Airlines. I’ve always loved traveling and Alaska has always held a close place to my heart as Seattle’s hometown airline. For the first trip to Alaska, Juneau was a great choice. It is just a little over a 2 hour flight from Seattle. Juneau is Alaska’s capital and home to Alaskan Brewery (one of my favorite breweries) plus it has the outdoor appeal with the Glacier and hikes to be enjoyed. The plan was to head back to Seattle on the 8pm flight if all worked out. Our first stop in Juneau was heading to the Mendenhall Glacier. It was a really easy hike to get to Nugget Falls where we had a better view of the glacier and the falls crashing down next to it. Definitely a great way to start the day. The glacier is massive and the beautiful blue colors shine across the water on the ice thunks. After the Glacier, we hit the highway out of town to a place that the rental car agent recommended. It was a shrine that had an amazing spot on the water. From there, we were able […]

When it comes to inspiration for this year, all it took was Steve Jobs Stanford Commencement Speech. It was a reminder that there will be highs and lows, loss and love, lessons and experiences. It’s part of our journey. His simple question of “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” was all it took. This season I was able to truly experience the winter, explore the mountains that I wanted to ride and support, hang out with friends on powder days, ride next to legends and experience terrain that I had only dreamed about. Looking back, I am pretty sure that for the past 6 months I’ve been smiling every moment of this adventure. Here’s a video of this season captured through photos. My stats: First day of the season was November 10, 2011 at Mammoth Mountain. I haven’t called it quits yet but my last day of riding was hiking Stevens Pass on May 17, 2012. My current total is 74 days so far but I’ll be adding to this with summer shred days. Places I rode this year: Colorado: Winter Park, Vail, Steamboat, Copper, […]

The first day I fell in love with Valdez was when I walked around town and took in the breathtaking harbor in the middle of the peaks that surround the town. The next day I fell more in love when I was standing on the top of my first run at Thompson Pass by myself thinking about how I got there, how my entire riding experience has led to this moment and how it was up to me to make it down. I was in Alaska for 25 days over the past couple weeks, I flew in early to help get ready for Tailgate AK and left a couple days after the event ended. My role with Tailgate AK was to make sure the media and VIP’s were taken care of for the 12 days of the event. I drove the shuttle with contest winners, pros, photographers, filmers, writers and whoever else jumped in. We had some early mornings, a good amount of late nights and lots of funny moments to add to the occasion. This was my first time at Thompson Pass and I didn’t push it. I rode stuff that didn’t scare me other than the thought in […]

A home away from home. For the past month, that was the Mountain Sky Hotel in Valdez, Alaska. It came with all the amenities you expect from a hotel; complimentary breakfast, coffee, comfy beds, swimming pool, hot tub and daily cleaning service. But it also came with a new watering hole called the 32° Lounge and Grill that became the hub for gathering each evening. Located right in the center of Valdez, the Mountain Sky Hotel was walking distance to everything you needed from bars to restaurants to grocery stores. It was still a good 40 miles to Thompson Pass where the Flow Tailgate AK experience was taking place but it offered a retreat with running water, laundry and warm beds each evening. I arrived in Valdez a week prior to the start of Flow Tailgate AK and used the quiet time to finish up work in my hotel room and wander around the town of Valdez. It was the perfect opportunity to take photos of the harbor, figure out which coffee shop was my favorite (Sacred Grounds Expresso was it) and enjoy the calm before the storm. A month in a hotel can be quite a long time but […]

After spending the last couple days exploring Valdez, it was finally time to head up to Thompson Pass and get the full scale of Alaska mountains. I headed up bright and early with my gear to see what work needed to be done and ended up getting in a couple laps to warm-up for this adventure. During Tailgate BC, Nico was telling me about Alaska and how your whole season is basically practice for AK. That everything you’ve ridden hopefully prepares you for the riding you’ll have in Alaska. It was definitely humbling and a reminder that these mountains are no joke. For those who don’t have a sled in AK, the crew at Big Mountain Taxi will get you up the hill but a lot cheaper than a heli. I ended up headed out with driver Calean (spelling?) who took care of me on the ride up. We headed up Nick’s to get in a couple laps there. Here’s a shot of Nico getting driven up. Gear for Alaska. Dakine heli pro backpack with my backcountry gear, Jones Hovercraft, Smith helmet. Today I had a new piece of gear, a harness.
Earlier this winter I had two options: 1. to stay in California and figure things out or 2. travel the world, live my dreams and figure things out. The decision was pretty easy, I was gonna travel, have fun and do what I wanted. It’s been everything I’ve dreamed of and this winter is about to get better. I’m about to hit the road running (well flying). First stop is California this weekend, then it’s back to Washington where I’ll be getting my Avalanche Level I at Mt Baker, then it’s off to Revelstoke for Tailgate BC and finally Thompson Pass for Tailgate AK. The next couple months will be hard work but an incredible experience. If you haven’t heard about Tailgate Alaska, all the info is at http://www.tailgatealaska.com/. I’ll be sharing the experience this spring. Flow Tailgate BC – March 8-12, 2012 Revelstoke. One simple word with lots of powder in the mind. The first Tailgate BC is heading to Revelstoke next month for a couple days of tailgating, riding and having a good time. I’ll be driving up to the event and helping out with media. Last night the premiere was held at the Nectar Lounge in Fremont, offering up a small venue perfect for showing the film and the live music from Colorado band Salem afterwards. There were plenty of TV’s around the upper bar which meant you got to see everything. The bar was quiet for a snowboard film premiere but that meant no elbowing to get to the bar for the night.
