Atomic Snowboards feature a product line focused on the ride from backcountry to freestyle snowboards. The boards are built in Altenmarkt with a focus on being environmentally friendly to help protect the playground we love to play in. The environmental efforts feature the Renu board construction on the Poacher Renu and Alibi. The Renu board is made without fibre glass in the construction, recycled base, edge or wooden sidewalls, juta or wood construction, the renu boards are green boards to help maintain our planet. For 10-11, Atomic gives a couple camber and rocker options to help make the ride more enjoyable on the mountain and suitable to your needs. For straight up POW they’ve created the Sir Floatsalot board featuring the floatlot technology. For rocker they have the all terrain pop rocker that features pop camber and rocker to give you all terrain action, pop rocker FS gives you pop camber and rocker with a skateboard like feel, pop rocker FR combines the benefits of rocker and camber into a longer rocker area designed to float in powder, Rocker easy to ride focuses on making the beginners happy with a neutral area between the bindings for easy to turn and […]

Location: Keystone, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy snow conditions during night riding. Setup: I rode the Atomic Stasher with Union Force bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 156cm First Impression: Definitely a backcountry freestyle board with the stiffer flex this has…not your typical resort park flex. Weight: little heavier than average Flex: The stasher was on the stiffer side for a freestyle board but it matches perfectly to a backcountry charger, all mountain focused board that can charge the mountain or the jump line. Stiffer longitudinally with a more forgiving softer torsinal flex between the bindings, the stasher could charge the mountain but also offer quick edge to edge response when you needed it. The Stasher features S-poontech which makes the board feel shorter and buttery (though I didn’t think it was that buttery) and when put on edge, gives you the edge hold of the entire effective edge. Turning: This is where the stashed impressed the most and the S-poontech was noticeable, the effective edge really rallied on this board down the mountain. S turns felt the best and held the edge the smoothest but shorter radius turns were possible, it just felt more fun to […]

Location: Whistler, BC Snow Conditions: Bluebird with hardpacked ice in the morning and slush in the afternoon. Pivot was the 2nd board of the day, so it hit some ice and some softer snow. Setup: I rode the Atomic Pivot with Union Trilogy’s and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: I was on the flat terrain with this board and was doing tail spins while holding a press. It was a lot of fun. Size: 156cm Weight: average Flex: The pivot has a good consistent medium flex from tip to tail, even thought it’s considered a freestyle board, the flex allows it to venture out of the park and still be rideable down the mountain. There’s a good amount of torsional flex making it quick responsive from edge to edge, but with the torsional flex you lose some stability on the longer drawn out turns. With the Pop Rocker FS, it gives it a more freestyle take so it’s still capable of pressing and buttering because of the softer flex on the board. Turning: Great responsive turns from this board, it was very quick on edge and initiated turns quickly and lets you really carve on edge and power […]

When a good product comes along for a good price and lasts, snowboarders will buy it up. The Hatchet was one of those boards years ago and Atomic consistently makes products that are good, maybe not life changing or on the technology edge but consistently good. With the introduction of a splitboard last year, they entered the market to offer a splitboard/binding combo that continues to this year. Atomic steps in the reverse camber game with a Pop Rocker FS and Pop Rocker FR designed to keep the pop intact and their FR is designed for powder riding. I ran out of time to take photos of Atomic at SIA, so here’s something better.
So on Monday Santa Claus (aka Eric) delivered a very big and nice Christmas present to me. I was anxiously awaiting the Fed Ex delivery all day Monday. When the Atomic Poacher arrived, I checked it out and had to wait until the evening to play with it and start putting it together. For those not familiar with a splitboard, it offers up skiing and snowboarding with the same equipment. For backcountry access, you are able to ski and hike uphill on the skis and then for the best backcountry riding…you can connect it to snowboard down. You addskins to the bottom of the skis and they give you traction when climbing uphill. Last year I had the chance to splitboard on Buffalo Pass just outside of Steamboat Springs with my more knowledgable splitboard friend Gary and it was definitely something I could do. I used to ski so I didn’t find skinning up that bad and definitely offered up a way to enjoy some powder stashes farther out. Splitboard, bindings, skins and crampons At SIA in January, Atomic brought out their new splitboard the Poacher. The Poacher offers up a new interfacing system for splitboards since before this was […]

Earlier this year I was able to spend the remainder of the season riding a Atomic prototype. At the time it was supposed to be a 08-09 release, but it got pushed back to being 09-10 release…and I get to say a little about it now. Each company has their own style of reverse camber and each one rides completely different. Atomic Snowboards is no exception to that and they created a snowboard that rides entirely different than the others. You’ll be able to check it out on the Atomic Pivot and Axum for 2009-2010 season, it won’t be the exact model I was riding…the flex will be changed but the shape will be the same. As for graphics you’ll have to wait and see! During the time I spent on this board I was able to ride it in a lot of variable conditions and honestly in late season riding this board was a bit too much for me…I let it ride me a couple times. It took a while to adjust to the shape and the varying sidecut of the board. One of the bigger issues with reverse camber is how these boards handle carving and being able […]

I like short walks on the beach, funny movies and I’m an Aries. Shay: What is your job title? Eric: Snowboard Product Director for Atomic. Shay: Did your parents question your job choice? Eric: Ha, they have questioned every choice I have made. Shay: What was your first set up? Eric: Round 1 was a Burton Performer with some RAD sorels. Round 2 was a Ride Timeless. Shay: What is your current set up? Eric: I have been rocking the Atomic Cold Smoke and our new split board, the Poacher. Shay: What was your first job?
When I first saw it…I was glad someone who I wasn’t expecting took the risk, saw the potential and tried something new. Atomic for 2008-2009 introduced a binding called the El Presidente that has BOA technology on the ratchet. Unfortunately I missed out on the chance to demo the bindings but this is one binding technology that I want to see and test out. I have friends who love atomic bindings and know others who hate them. For me, they were middle ground…a solid binding but nothing that stood out yet. I had heard from friends at Atomic that the bindings would become better and I believe they have. Maybe it’s the alcoholic in me that likes the names of the bindings. I believe Atomic has a product better than most people expect it to be. A quote from the Atomic catalog “Over the past two seasons we’ve undertaken a monumental binding project of epic proportions. The first step was to scrap every bit of conventional knowledge about bindings and embark on a search and destroy mission. So after a night at the pub down the street, we began testing everything from the cheap plastic bindings found on toy snowboards […]

This year they bring a lot more to the snowboard table in terms of new ideas. Atomic introduces a splitboard to the line, the Poacher, which comes in a 157cm, 164cm and 171cm sizes. With the popularity of the Hatchet, Atomic has put out a wide Hatchet that comes in a 156, 159 and 162cm sizes. I don’t have any pictures of the binding, but the Atomic El Presidente introduces the first use of boa in a snowboard binding. The toestrap features boa to tighte the strap down. I’ll try to find a picture or scan a photo I have.
