In this day and age, boredom is when you turn to your smartphone to check out the latest updates on social media, play on Words with Friends or go for the win with Angry Birds. But for snowboarders, there’s a new game in town that lets you get your shred fix while hanging around. SummitX Snowboarding by Free Range Games went live in December with a game app dedicated to snowboarders passing the time doing what they do best – snowboard. [singlepic id=12843 w=500 h=333 float=] For the past month, I’ve been playing with the game during those downtime moments. I went with the female snowboarder to be my rider and slowly been acquiring her grab skills, snowboard gear and getting used to the game. It’s pretty fun to see Automaton Snowboards and Pop Outerwear featured in the game. [singlepic id=12842 w=500 h=333 float=] I’m not the best gamer and generally have a hard time with controlling the riding but on this game, I found it pretty easy with the thumb movements to control the turns and pop in a couple grabs off the jumps. The first scores were still pretty rough, it definitely took a couple rounds to feel […]

Automaton may not have had a booth at SIA but they are ready for the 10-11 season with their continuous motto of snowboarding saves lives and continuing on making boards that stay true to themselves. The focus continues to be the snowboards and making them fun freestyle boards for the mountain. For 10-11 Automaton continues to bring out the “betterness” in their board line with a simple approach to making snowboards: proven construction, top materials, easy, predictable flexes and two fun freestyle boards to choose from. Automaton Babble Snowboard Features: Nearly true twin shape (noses are 1cm longer than tails), wide stances centered on the effective edge, radial sidecut, medium-soft flexes, simple predictable flexes. Artist: Eve Duhamel and photo work by Simon Duhamel. Sizes: 144, 149, 156 [singlepic id=8244 w=900 h=600 float=] Automaton Manimal Snowboard Features: True twin shape, stances are wide and centered, radial sidecut, soft flexes for maximum sensitivity and easy of use, less sidecut means high speed stability and smoother landings. Artist: Alex Funderburk.
Behind each snowboard graphic is someone’s ideas. A graphic can be born from a long car ride with friends, a silly design they walk by, in a dream they have…the list goes on. I caught up with Automaton Snowboards to find out what goes into each graphic, first talking with Brenton Woo the owner and brains behind Automaton Snowboards and then talking with three of Automaton’s artist about their graphics they have created. [singlepic id=6349 w=500 h=166 float=] Shay: How do you come up with ideas for Automaton? Brenton: I like topics that the general public will pick up on quickly. One thing I don’t like about the traditional art scene is work that isn’t easily understood. Ever gone to an art museum and wondered why the pile of whatever you’re looking at is in there? I’m sure there’s a historically significant back story to it, and if we took the time to learn it, it would make sense as to why that piece is in a museum. But what’s the point of that? That seems like a very inefficient method of conveying information to me. For Automaton, I like to work with themes that are common life experiences for […]

Shay: Tell us a little bit about yourself Brenton: As a snowboarder, I’ve spent 10 full seasons in the mountains, predominantly in Summit County and Tahoe. As a person, I welcome being outside of my comfort zone. I like traveling, snowboarding, and surfing. I like seeing progression, and I have little patience for tradition. (True progression and tradition are mutually exclusive). Even though I’m not a city person, my favorites are London, San Francisco, Stockholm, and Melbourne. Shay: What is your job title? Brenton: Founder, CEO, President, General Manager. I have my hands in all aspects of Automaton’s operation, and since tasks change according to season, it’s tricky to put a title on my job. From branding to logistics to the supply chain to sales, I handle it all. A buddy also in the snowboard industry, Jim, when introducing me to people often says that I am Automaton. He says, “This is Brenton. He’s Automaton.” [singlepic id=5845 w=400 h=300 float=] Shay: Did your parents question your job choice? Brenton: Well, my parents definitely questioned my way of life at the time, which predominantly consisted of traveling and chasing waves and snow. Now that they see what Automaton’s all about, I […]

Location: Steamboat, Colorado Snow Conditions: Bluebird skies with slushy groomers, overcast low visibility to new snow and hardpacked conditions Setup: I rode the Automaton with my Union Forces and GNU Agro’s and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: The first day I rode it, it was super slushy and really hard to judge it…but the board rode slush well. The second day was much better, groomers to fresh snow in spots and the Time Fighter could handle it all. The graphics of the cougar are hilarious. Size: 151cm Weight: lighter than average Flex: Longitudinally a medium flex from tip to tail, torsionally the board was very easy to initiate into each turn. In some leftover powder, I needed to really ride the tail of the board to stay afloat but the size also played into that (smaller). I was able to press the tail easily and the medium flex made it rideable in the park and on the groomers. Turning: It was really easy to maneuver from edge to edge and easy turn initiation. The best part was it was an easy ride, no adjustment to getting on the board and riding. The best turns were shorter quick turns, […]

When I was at SIA I had the opportunity to meet Brenton Woo, the man behind Automaton Snowboards. I had heard of the snowboards but never got familiarized with them or knew too much about them. It was good I met him cause now I get to share the 09-10 Automaton line with you and check it out myself. At a time when most snowboard companies are big, the underdogs are still out there and creating products that are different and they are passionate about. Automaton is one of those different companies, with mentality of “snowboarding saves lives” to “shred today (because tomorrow it might melt.” Based out of Truckee, California the goal of Automaton is to bring snowboarding back from those who don’t ride and make it better for snowboarders, affordable and better.
