Behind each snowboard graphic is someone’s ideas. A graphic can be born from a long car ride with friends, a silly design they walk by, in a dream they have…the list goes on. I caught up with Automaton Snowboards to find out what goes into each graphic, first talking with Brenton Woo the owner and brains behind Automaton Snowboards and then talking with three of Automaton’s artist about their graphics they have created. [singlepic id=6349 w=500 h=166 float=] Shay: How do you come up with ideas for Automaton? Brenton: I like topics that the general public will pick up on quickly. One thing I don’t like about the traditional art scene is work that isn’t easily understood. Ever gone to an art museum and wondered why the pile of whatever you’re looking at is in there? I’m sure there’s a historically significant back story to it, and if we took the time to learn it, it would make sense as to why that piece is in a museum. But what’s the point of that? That seems like a very inefficient method of conveying information to me. For Automaton, I like to work with themes that are common life experiences for […]

Location: Steamboat, Colorado Snow Conditions: Bluebird skies with slushy groomers, overcast low visibility to new snow and hardpacked conditions Setup: I rode the Automaton with my Union Forces and GNU Agro’s and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: The first day I rode it, it was super slushy and really hard to judge it…but the board rode slush well. The second day was much better, groomers to fresh snow in spots and the Time Fighter could handle it all. The graphics of the cougar are hilarious. Size: 151cm Weight: lighter than average Flex: Longitudinally a medium flex from tip to tail, torsionally the board was very easy to initiate into each turn. In some leftover powder, I needed to really ride the tail of the board to stay afloat but the size also played into that (smaller). I was able to press the tail easily and the medium flex made it rideable in the park and on the groomers. Turning: It was really easy to maneuver from edge to edge and easy turn initiation. The best part was it was an easy ride, no adjustment to getting on the board and riding. The best turns were shorter quick turns, […]
