My first taste of the backcountry was years ago when a friend took me out on a borrowed splitboard and backcountry gear to “earn my turns.” It was tough with lots of sweat but it was also a blast and it felt amazing to ride terrain I hadn’t dreamed of. Since then I’ve slowly been acquiring the gear needed to make the full backcountry collection. The first year, I bought the collaspible ski poles, then the next year the shovel and probe and finally got the beacon as a Christmas present (thanks family). The splitboard and bindings were harder to come by so I borrowed them and this year, I am happy to finally round out the collection with my own gear. Of course being in the backcountry requires education and I’m already reaching out to get my hands on the books and the classes so I can be safer in the outdoors this winter. I’m looking forward to skipping the Christmas lines and making my own lines out of the resort, especially the sidecountry at June and exploring some more scenic areas around the area. K2 Panoramic Splitboard What can I say, I’m a fan of bambooyah so definitely […]

When most of our seasons are coming to an end, Tailgate Alaska is just beginning in Valdez, Alaska giving snowboarders the opportunity to ride the terrain that Alaska offers. Whether it’s heli, hike or snowmo your way up…the way down is freeriding and powder at it’s finest. I haven’t yet attended Tailgate Alaska, it’s been a dream so maybe someday I’ll make it up North for the big adventure but until then it meant checking out the Tailgate Alaska movie premiere in Seattle. Last night the premiere was held at the Nectar Lounge in Fremont, offering up a small venue perfect for showing the film and the live music from Colorado band Salem afterwards. There were plenty of TV’s around the upper bar which meant you got to see everything. The bar was quiet for a snowboard film premiere but that meant no elbowing to get to the bar for the night. [singlepic id=9973 w=400 h=225 float=] I went to the premiere with Gorio and Aimee [singlepic id=9974 w=300 h=400 float=] The Tailgate Alaska movie showcased what Tailgate Alaska is all about, from the riders who showed up and were interviewed in the film to the snowboarding that was accessible […]

After yesterday’s amazing riding at Buffalo Pass, it wasn’t a hard decision to go back there today for more snowboarding. Despite a late night out, some of us rallied this morning with much needed coffee and made it back to the sleds for more powder turns. We had less people and ended up being more organized with the sleds so we were able to make a ton of laps during the day. From Buffalo Pass we could see the Steamboat ski area in the distance [singlepic id=7410 w=400 h=300 float=] We ended up going farther out in Buffalo Pass to find a new location to make tracks in and today was even better than yesterday on great conditions and turns. I kept thinking today how good the turns were, despite being a bit haggard this morning nothing beats waking up and getting powder turns every run. [singlepic id=7412 w=400 h=300 float=] John, Trent and Shane at the top [singlepic id=7414 w=400 h=300 float=] We went to three different spots today. The first was wide open with some tree turns on the way to the field, the second was endless aspen trees and the third was in between the road where […]

Just outside of Steamboat is Buffalo Pass which offers ideal sledding access and some amazing snowboarding terrain if you have a sled. I don’t have a sled so getting out to Buff has never happened but with the crew in town we were able to borrow sleds to enjoy some powder riding on Buff Pass. I joined up with everyone at 8am but rallying over 20 people meant getting a later start. We packed up the vehicles and headed to Buffalo Pass. Everyone came prepared with beacons, probes and shovels to make the day safe and while Buffalo Pass isn’t much for avalanche danger it’s backcountry and being prepared is better than not. We rolled into the parking lot on Buffalo Pass to meet up with everyone, figure out sleds and start the shred adventure. We ended up with 7 sleds for the day and over 20 people snowboarding so it meant a couple people to a sled. [singlepic id=7390 w=400 h=300 float=] Shane from Siege Audio and I were finally able to meet, shred and have fun for the weekend. We’ve spoken for months and it worked out perfectly to hang out this weekend.
