Behind each snowboard graphic is someone’s ideas. A graphic can be born from a long car ride with friends, a silly design they walk by, in a dream they have…the list goes on. I caught up with Automaton Snowboards to find out what goes into each graphic, first talking with Brenton Woo the owner and brains behind Automaton Snowboards and then talking with three of Automaton’s artist about their graphics they have created. [singlepic id=6349 w=500 h=166 float=] Shay: How do you come up with ideas for Automaton? Brenton: I like topics that the general public will pick up on quickly. One thing I don’t like about the traditional art scene is work that isn’t easily understood. Ever gone to an art museum and wondered why the pile of whatever you’re looking at is in there? I’m sure there’s a historically significant back story to it, and if we took the time to learn it, it would make sense as to why that piece is in a museum. But what’s the point of that? That seems like a very inefficient method of conveying information to me. For Automaton, I like to work with themes that are common life experiences for […]

A graphic can be born from a long car ride with friends, a silly design they walk by, in a dream they have…the list goes on. Each year there are thousands of graphics created, around an image, idea, story. Behind the Graphic is a series of interviews that I’ll be collecting over time with various artists/designers from companies who have designed graphics Jonathan Rodriguez design for the Salomon Octopus won for the International Salomon Artwork Contest in 2007. Shay: What snowboard is your artwork featured on? Jonathan: Something I did for Salomon it’s call “Salomon Octopus”. [singlepic id=5306 w=251 h=400 float=] Shay: You won the Salomon Snowboards Art Contest in 2007. Did you come up with the idea specifically for Salomon or did you design it beforehand? Jonathan: The challenge was to come up with something totally original for the brand, something showing the artist personal skills, so I try that and the idea really came after reading the brief. I chose the monster theme to be the vehicle of the following message: “You and your Salomon snowboard are a monster of powerful speed and adrenaline”, haha you know, something like that. Behind the Graphic is a series of interviews that I’ll be collecting over time with various artists/designers from companies who have designed graphics. Shay: What snowboard is your artwork featured on? Erik: For 09/10 boards I’ve designed 2 models; the women’s Blue and the Addictive Collection Agent 154, which is basically an artist series. [singlepic id=5841 w=267 h=400 float=] Shay: Did you approach Rome with an idea or did they approach you with an idea for a graphic? Erik: I did the start-to-finish work for both of these graphics. This includes research, ideation, and presenting a representation of your idea – all the way through to production details and specifications for the final product. Shay: Describe yourself as an artist? Erik: Some people may disagree, but as a designer, I don’t really see myself as an artist at all. Maybe more of a craftsman – but not even that. The Green Machine, Black Death, Inc., Indoor Survival, Horrorscope FK, Space Metal Fantasy FK, Stairmaster, Saturnia, and the Late Release Super Special – ULTRAFEAR FK. Shay: Did you approach Capita with an idea or did they approach you with an idea for a graphic? Ephka: I’m pretty much given free reign. Since I’ve been working with CAPiTA for almost 10 years, there’s a lot of trust in the relationship and I have a good idea what is needed. The process is not clearly defined. Sometimes I come up with a bunch of ideas and we will talk about what might work where. Sometimes it’s a specific series and Blue will brief me on what type […]
