One of the perks of being back in the Northwest is being in close proximity to the Whistler Bike Park. Just a five hour drive means I can head up to Canada for the weekend and ride an amazing bike park with friends. I was pretty excited to know that I would be back in the Northwest just in time for the Whistler Bike Park opening day on May 16. Friday was the big opening day so I headed up with my friend Carrie to hit the trails together. We parked our cars at our lodging for the weekend and rode into town. We ended up taking a lap before meeting up with other familiar faces. Our group ended up being 4 girls (myself, Carrie, Janet and Rachel) lapping the park. We mixed up the trails between easy and more technical, harder. Since it was day one, it was good to get back into the swing of biking without going too gnarly. It was such a good feeling to be back on trails like Heart of Darkness, Ninja Cougar, Samurai Pizza Cat and B-Line. With the new GoFest Whistler Festival going on for opening weekend – we were able to […]

After spending Tuesday in the Bike Park with the bumps and bends clinic, today was about getting back on the same trails and motivating myself to continue to conquer them while working on my riding. Conditions were dry and sunny but the breeze up and down on the ride were perfect for mountain biking. I started out on Live Wire, then headed over to Gypsy for a couple laps and ended the day on easier Coaster and Easy Rider to get back to my truck. Gypsy has been a good trail for me. Super hard, heart pounding with technical rocks and really fun rideable features like rocks to bridges, rock stairs, crazy rock drops, barrels to rocks. Basically imagine a lot of rocks from small to big, sharp to dull on one run. I’ve managed to ride every feature in place except this one below. There’s something about the rocks in place especially the smaller ones that can move on you. I’ll have to redeem myself someday but thankfully I walked around it whenever I encountered it. I was having a great run on Gypsy until right before the wall ride, I was coming in to hit it and felt […]

Having the Stevens Pass Bike Park in my backyard is a dream come true. I knew that I’d be busy organizing and re-doing the website this weekend but was counting down till I could head up to the Bike Park for an afternoon break of lap after lap to clear my head. I wasn’t sure what to expect for weekend crowds but found that even with the two trails and one chairlift, that the flow kept up during the day so lines were almost non-existent. Since it’s been sunny in Washington, the trails were a lot drier and there were less snow spots than the last time I rode on Opening Day. It’s pretty amazing scenery to see Stevens Pass in the summer. I noticed people were scenic riding the chairlift, relaxing at the top tables and watching the downhill bikers take to the mountain. The best part was Rock Crusher has an extended section which is now my favorite section of the trail. It’s a mix of huge berms, technical turns and fun rhythms to start it out.

For as long as I can remember, snowboarding has been my main passion. I’ve made my dreams come true with year round riding and never thinking twice about it. I figured since I was so passionate about snowboarding, I’d probably wouldn’t find another sport that would make me feel the same way. In reality, I haven’t put down the snowboard long enough to really experience anything else. Most of my previous summers meant long drives to a patch of snow or moving to Hood to work at Windells Camp so I could ride everyday. I loved it but this summer I was ready for a break. The snow patches were a bit harder to get to, flights to Portland weren’t as affordable and I figured why not enjoy summer? The timing was right with a Bike Park in my backyard and a used Giant Reign mountain bike for $600. I was determined to finally give mountain biking a chance. I started out on the easiest trail at Mammoth, Downtown. I lapped it a couple times to get the hang of being back on a bike, luckily the trail taught me the basics of riding on sand (something very common at […]
