After a couple days of much needed rest, I hit the highway north to Whistler. Whistler Blackcomb has had an amazing winter and it’s still in full force! I always try to come up for the Telus Festival because it’s always such a good time on the mountain, apres around town and at the parties every night. This year coming up to Whistler was more about a vacation than anything else. Each day started late, I enjoyed lounging around and making my way to the mountain when I felt like it. I knew a couple groups of people on the mountain each day so meeting up was pretty easy. I started the morning meeting up with Moselle, a friend who lives in Vancouver. She was getting her snowboard legs back under her so it was a good start to the morning. Whistler got 20cm’s of snow overnight so it was also a fresh snow day but chopped by the time we made it out. For the afternoon, we met up with Michelle, Scott, Lisa and Billy at the top to make some laps. It was good to get in a group lap with them and really charge with Michelle.
It’s April which means it’s time to head back to Washington & Whistler! I try to hit up Whistler at least once every year for my favorite time of year, the Telus Festival when snowboarding meets music meets canadian beer. This year the Grenade Games are doing their 6th year and 2nd year in Whistler which means quite the possibilities for trouble in the mountains. I’m flying back home to Seattle to take in a couple days with family & friends before I head up to Whistler to end the remainder of my trip snowboarding and enjoying all the events going on in Whistler next week for Telus Festival. This trip gives me a couple new blog opportunities that I have in the works, I’ll be making stops and high 5’ing along the drive to Whistler. The best part is I’ll be able to demo a brand of snowboard that everyone wants to know about plus do more on-snow demos on the demo day that goes on. For the most part, I’ll be enjoying it all and stoked to come back this year. Washington Most of my Seattle time will be visiting family & friends but it’ll also be a […]

On Tuesday, the Grenade Games 5 started in Whister, BC with a variety of competitions and activities planned. Wednesday’s contest was the Dual Slalom Moguls on top of Blackcomb Mountain. To make things more difficult for the athletes, even by the 11am start time the mountain had icy conditions. Here’s my mini video of a couple of the runs that pros did. Notice the wipeouts…quite funny! Grenade Games 5: Dual Slalom Moguls from Shayboarder on Vimeo.
I got my first taste of riding east coast conditions but on the west coast. The riding at Blackcomb was super icy and could hear the scraping sounds the entire morning on any run. Luckily for us it was the day to watch Day 2 of Grenade Games with the Dual Slalom Mogul course and get to see pros sideslipping the icy moguls. Read about the Grenade Games here [singlepic id=5522 w=400 h=267 float=] The weather was a mix of bluebird, overcast and then snow by the end of the day. [singlepic id=5523 w=400 h=300 float=] After watching the Grenade Games, we headed to the Peak to Peak gondola to take that to Whistler Mountain. Peak to Peak is new this year and eliminates the hassle of getting between Whistler and Blackcomb mountain, making it a scenic ride across the valley.
Got a good night’s sleep last night and woke up ready for some snowboarding at Blackcomb today. Late season conditions are good at Whistler/Blackcomb but you also tend to sleep in a little later as the conditions soften up so it’s less ice and more fun. I love being in Whistler [singlepic id=5534 w=400 h=268 float=] Photo: Kendra I did a mini video for today’s riding, some fun moments with my canadian friends and snowboarding in bluebird slushy conditions. Blackcomb 4/21/09 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. I love coming to Whistler especially during Telus Festival, so many things to do from the mountain to the base area. I’ve spent plenty of years clubbing that this year I’m more about the riding but there’s always a lot of apres’ after riding. [singlepic id=5535 w=300 h=400 float=] The sun was out for most of today on the mountain, offering up slushy conditions as the day went on. [singlepic id=5536 w=400 h=300 float=] Our riding crew today consisted of Joe, Mike, Kendra and myself. Later on Ben joined us for the last couple runs before apres’ Needless to say, we had a lot of fun without new snow conditions and […]

Monday’s conditions on the mountain were less than stellar. A couple people went up early to scout it out while the rest of us lazily got ready. The texts back to us said no visibility and a couple inches of snow on top of ice. That group soon came down and joined us for the day. So Monday was relaxing, hang out, movies and poker kind of day. Tuesday was my last day on the mountain before I had to drive back to Seattle. We made it up relatively early with our group…everyone recovered who had missed riding before. I hooked Karmel up with riding the 155cm Never Summer Evo R so she could try out a rocker board for the first time. Making our way up the mountain Yesterday it snowed most of the day in the village, so today there were freshies up on top of the mountain. We made our way up high without any crowds on the mou ntain. It was quite empty for 10am. Mixture of clouds and sun T0 get up to the glacier you have to take the T-bar and I hate t-bar’s as a snowboarder. But we managed to get up.
Yesterday I flew to Denver, then Seattle and then drove my ass up to Whistler. I landed in Seattle at 9:30pm and arrived in Whistler by 3:30am. It was quite a journey to make it but I was dedicated and with a 4-pack of Red Bull I made it. I’ve been to Whistler-Blackcomb many times, when I used to live in Seattle it was a trip I made a couple times a year so I’m familiar with the mountains and the village. Today I woke up with 4 hours of sleep in a friends condo here in Whistler. Most of the people I’m staying with are snowboard.com friends including Joe, Mike, Kendra, and Karmel. We’ve hung out before and had good times and definitely this trip is about good times. First chairlift up from upper Blackcomb village We headed up to ride Blackcomb for the day. Since we were on the mountain before 9am…it was a bit icy and hardpacked conditions. Every snowboarder coming down the mountain, you could hear in advanced as they scraped on the ice coming down. Joe taking a break on the Blackcomb signsKendra saying hi to the camera You can see most of our group […]
