It’s not every day that the dream job of being a snow bum and making 10,000 a month comes alive – but this year Canyons recognized the power of online media when they offered the perfect job and home for this winter. A couple weeks ago I saw the job and was blown away by how rad it sounded, it’s a dream for many skiers and snowboarders and now one lucky person will live the dream. Canyons is offering up the Ultimate Mountain Gig Contest with a deadline just weeks away. It looks like you can come to expect more from the Canyons and I can’t wait to see how this Ultimate Mountain Gig pans out for one lucky skier or snowboarder. Joe Johnson from the Canyons marketing staff was kindly enough to help with finding out more about the Ultimate Mountain Gig and with my own curiousity what this entails for the Canyons. Shay: This is a big step into how ski resorts can use social media to reach customers, what made The Canyons decide to create this new opportunity? The idea for the Ultimate Mountain Gig was generated because Canyons is acutely aware of the power of social […]

Shay: Tell us about yourself Nico: Hi, my name is Nico! I am 31 years old already. I am French but since I have lived many years in Switzerland I also have a Swiss passport. I had the opportunity to travel quite a bit as a kid and then as a student, moving around every 2 to 3 years from one European city to another (Zurich, Milan, London, Zagreb, Dortmund, Paris, Grenoble, Lyon, Ljubljana, and now Geneva). It’s a pretty sick experience because I got to discover cultures, learn some languages and meet lots of people. But going to the mountains has always been part of my life and when I discovered snowboarding in the early 90’s in my home resort of Leysin, I got totally addicted. [singlepic id=4731 w=400 h=300 float=] Shay: What was your first set up? Nico: My first ever board was a Santa Cruz ASR 163! Asymmetric! I rode Santa Cruz bindings and Sorel boots! Shay: What is your current set up? Nico: I am pretty lucky to have a couple of decks now so I can switch according to the conditions. For example I rode this Furlan 176cm board in the deep pow we got […]

Yesterday I was given a heads up on the blog that Mike West is doing, documenting his life as he owns and operates 686 Outerwear and apparel. Scrolling through the blog, I found one post that really stands out because it shows the best look into an overseas factory that I have seen to-date. From the photos to descriptions, Mike really lays out the process and work involved in the 686 factory in China. Head over to Hypebeast to check out his blog post or just click on the swine flu masks. [singlepic id=4583 w=400 h=300 float=] It’s great to see how people who have access to so much, with just a blog can show the world about what goes behind the scenes. I’m already a fan of 686 outerwear and every year I continue to support them because of the quality and people behind the scenes.

Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to meet and ride with Vancity Allie during my visit to Whistler, BC. Allie does an amazing blog on Vancouver living, snowboarder with awesome videos, photographs to die for and if you are a fan of Twilight, she’s got the stage covered! It’s rad to meet fellow bloggers who are passionate about what they do and fun in person…Allie was both of those. We met up and spent the afternoon riding at Whistler right before my trip ended. I took photos of her riding and filming and she took film of us hanging out. Here’s the video she made and definitely worth checking out!

Each journalist is powerful in the words that they write, the impressions they make and the final touch they bring to a story, a product or a picture. Many of the most popular blogs in the snowboard industry or beyond are respected because they don’t follow the trend. They have their own voice that isn’t paid for, marketing language or to sell a product. Each day there is a choice on what to blog about and what not to blog about. [singlepic id=5255 w=400 h=266 float=] Within my own blog, I have found a voice and a need to bring an unbiased opinion to the masses on snowboarding. If it’s not related to snowboarding, or in my opinion related to it, it won’t get a mention. During SIA, I visited companies I was interested in and was able to meet with. Some companies I was interested in but missed out on meeting with and others I chose to not meet with because I don’t agree with what they are. I didn’t meet with Ed Hardy or Bitchboards or companies that create a binding that turns so you skate easier. Last I checked snowboarding didn’t need those things. Many major companies […]

I spend a lot of time reading other blogs/sites especially ones with snowboarding…so when I was in Seattle I made the effort to hang out with Andrew Hart from A Good Reed. He also does stellar work on Yobeat…really, he does stellar work overall. I’ll wake up for powder at 6am…but for a person?!? Well I woke up at 6am, left Skykomish in the mountains of Washington and drove down to a “very public” Starbucks (you know just in case…really I’m joking) and met up with Hart for coffee at 8am before I had to get to the airport. Well we came up with a master plan to take over the world one post at a time, snowboard a lot and try to get him to move to Colorado. It was great to finally meet him in person and hopefully get to shred with him sometime. As much as I love talking over the internet…sitting down face to face with someone is awesome.

So my brothers from a european mother…launched their newly updated Snowbroader site. I’m stoked to see the guys back from their long summer vacation which they worked hard on getting their site completed and back in full swing. Kudos Nico and Phil! Here’s the press release below which sums up everything. SnowBroader launches the first, 100% snowboard focused, Premium Snowboard Blog Network! Geneva, September 29th 2008 – In just two years, snowbroader.eu – the European Snowboard Blog! has emerged in the snowboard media galaxy as a favorite news source for many riders looking for fresh and always up-todate snowboarding related information. With an intact passion and dedication, and strong of the experience, credibility, and traffic gained, SnowBroader is back and has grown into the first, 100% snowboard focused, Premium Snowboard Blog Network!” When we created our blog, snowbroader.eu, two years ago our objective was simple: bring people closer to the action and show the true spirit of snowboarding.” says site co-founder Nico. “Today, the natural next step for us is to give the power of blogging to all the people who make up our industry and lifestyle so they can do it too. We want to give them the chance […]
