Shay: So tell us about yourself? Brett: My background and education is in Industrial Design. I earned a bachelor of science from the University of Cincinnati. I have been at Boa Technology for two years. Previously, I spent 10 extremely formative and educational years at a design consultancy in various roles; product designer, project manager, design researcher and design/research manager. [singlepic id=5361 w=400 h=300 float=] Shay: What was your first set up? Brett: My first set-up consisted of my Sorel’s locked down on a Morrow Spoon Nose. I loved that board and am jazzed that they brought it back this year. Shay: What is your current set up? Brett: Currently I am riding a Palmer board with Ride bindings. That is the only permanent part of my set up. The boots get rotated as I am always testing new configurations and part combinations. Shay: What was your first job? Brett: Cold prep at Chi-Chi’s and then selling skis at a big box retailer. But in my field? Designing refrigerators for Amana. Shay: What’s a great day of snowboarding to you? Brett: Any day that I can get a babysitter. [singlepic id=5359 w=300 h=400 float=] Shay: How long have you been […]

Months ago I had one reader ask about BOA and mention that his local shops were not familiar with the system. So the idea came forward about visiting BOA and making a video that would show how to fix a broken lace if it happened on the BOA boot. I’ve never had my cable break and I wanted to learn as well. Ilya Minkin from BOA is demonstrating in the video on the different BOA and each way to fix & replace the laces. Inside fixing a BOA lace from Shayboarder on Vimeo. Check out my tour of the BOA Headquarters.

So in my last blog I talked about having boa compatible snowboard pants. After this comment I Love Fruit Loops said… What do you mean “boa compatible?” Are the legs on some pants so tight that you can’t wear boa-equipped boots with them? I checked around the internet and there are no photos I could find that show what I’m talking about. It’s described as this “Boot-cut hems with zip cuff slits and Cordura® scuff reinforcements feature BOA® lace system compatibility for secure attachment to boots” And it looks like this on your snowboard pants. Then when you flip it open, it looks like this. So really it lets you put the boa knob on your boot into the hole. Once there you can adjust your boa boots without having to pull up the bottom of your snowboard pants. In terms of tightness, I wear snowboard pants and all of them have bottom gaitors that fit around my boots. I’ve never encountered a snowboard pants that wouldn’t come down over my snowboard boots.

So while riding at Copper on Sunday I had a boot malfunction with my Vans Omni Focus which I mentioned in my blog here but I kept riding after solving the issue with duct tape. Today I called up Boa Technologies since they are based here in Steamboat Springs, explained my issue to them and I was able to bring my boots to their office to get the boa knob fixed. So during my lunch break I got to visit the Boa Technology office, it took less than 5 minutes for them to help get my boa knob back on and tightened everything so my boots were good to go! I was stoked…and I got to take home a spare boa tool (which I needed since I can’t find my old one). The before shot: Poor knob! The after shot: Back to Awesome!

Back in 2002 I only shopped at Olympic Sports (RIP) mostly cause I had an instructor discount there and they had this amazing salesperson, Gorio who knew everything (he still knows everything but at Evo in Seattle). After trying on many different boots, I found that Vans specifically the Omni’s were the best fit for me. They had the boa system and Gorio sold me on them. Now 5 years later, the boa system is in most major boot companies and still holding strong. I haven’t changed my boots, I still wear vans omni boots…just newer models and I’ve now switched it up to the dual (focus) boa system with my snowboard boots. My original pair of 02-03 Vans Omni took a while to get used to. They were the stiffest boots I’d ever owned and it took some breaking in time to get used to them. Gorio had to do work on the punching out the toebox the first day just so my feet weren’t killing me. I kept those boots around for the next 3 seasons. In those 3 seasons, I spent over 300 days total in those boots. Far past the life expectancy of snowboard boots. Luckily […]
