It’s been a busy week in Colorado with the Dew Tour at Breckenridge but the perfect time to check out the action on the slopes and around town. This year Nike Snowboarding debuted a Streetstyle competition during the Dew Tour with urban inspired street features on Breckenridge’s Washington Street. The features were a van jib, wall ride, jersey barrier rail and dumpster feature (same style as TWS Shootout with Rome years back). Eric Beauchemin ended up taking home the big prize for the streetstyle rail jam. I missed out on seeing a lot of his hits and didn’t get any photos because dinner was calling a crew of us. But it was fun to watch the rest of the riders take to the streetstyle and check it out for a bit.

Darren: I’m not sure if snowboarding has changed my life, but my life has always revolved around snowboarding. The idea of working anywhere but in a ski town or in the mountains is pretty frightening to me. Then again I’ve always lived or worked in a ski town for as long as I can remember. If anything, snowboarding helped me realize there is more to life than getting your degree and chugging along at the 9-5 hoping something better will come your way.
It’s not everyday that an Action Sports Film Festival pops up out of the blue but a couple weeks ago the announcement came out about the first annual Action Sports Film Festival in Breckenridge, Colorado. This four day event will host screenings, interviews, photography, activities and music right in the middle of two of the biggest contests of the year. I caught up with Summit’s event coordinator Cort Muller to find out more about the Film Festival and what people can expect from such a fun event this December. Shay: What is the Summit Action Sports Film Festival? This event is a PARTY! We are bringing together the talents of snowboarding and skiing and letting em loose on the town of Breckenridge. We set out to create a film festival in the right place, at the right time and make it accessible to the masses. Film makers, athletes and visitors alike will have a chance to come together and celebrate the culture of action sports. Three nights of screening the worlds best snow films will each be coupled with after-parties, art and photography exhibits and music. To close things down right, we’re hosting a grand awards ceremony and concert on […]

You know your life is easy when the only decision you make in the morning is what mountain to snowboard at. I had made the decision to skip out on Steamboat’s closing day in order to ride Breckenridge for the BSG demo day but a couple factors were involved. [singlepic id=8725 w=400 h=300 float=] A couple factors helped make the decision: #1 I wanted to snowboard versus drink #2 I needed to try some late season demos for a couple of you guys (whoever asked for the TRS is the reason I woke up at 8am from my warm comfortable bed) #3 Steamboat was closing the lifts 2 hours early for closing day but Breck would be running normal life hours. All those factored in and made it easy to decide to skip closing day festivities in order to get my snowboard shred fix with demos. I didn’t regret the decision at all today, I woke up after 8am to hit the road and made the easy bluebird drive to Breckenridge 2 hours away where I texted my friends once I got into town. I made it to the demo tents by 10:30am and by 11am was getting on the […]

I was planning to stay in Steamboat through the weekend but on Thursday Ryan informed me that Burton would be at Breckenridge with 10-11 gear doing a private demo for the day and I could come swing by to try some of the boards. I ended up driving down to Breckenridge Friday night to hang out with Zac from Hybrid Sessions and his crew. We ended up partying it out late at Cecilia’s which was a great time but also meant a lack of sleep for the night. Resort town living, you get used to it. [singlepic id=7992 w=400 h=300 float=] Showed up at the demo and found Merril who runs the show ready to get me out on gear [singlepic id=7988 w=300 h=400 float=] I ended up taking out 4 snowboards for the day: Burton Whammy Bar (Marley Colab), Burton Feelgood Flying V, Burton Lipstick Flying V and Burton Ration. I rode the Lexa’s with wing and lexa’s regular. I’ll be putting reviews up on all of the gear. I think Whammy Bar was the favorite of the day for overall do everything board.
Today was the last day of the Totino’s Open aka Dew Tour at Breckenridge with an afternoon ending of slopestyle finals for the men and women. The afternoon start time meant a morning of snowboarding at Breckenridge and checking out the booths for their full fun factor. I was able to make turns with Mike from Signal on my new Custom Signal OG (handpainted by me), it’s a 148cm so it’s my new small jib board but I still had a blast riding it today. [singlepic id=7128 w=267 h=400 float=] The reason I came to the Dew Tour this weekend was for one of the blog readers, Leslie who works with Fuse Marketing. We met yesterday and were able to meet up for turns today. We ended up lapping the mountain till contest time and were able to find runs to ourselves despite the long lines at the base of Peak 8. [singlepic id=7131 w=400 h=267 float=] One of the highlights from the day was realizing the potential of no-backs (much more to come on nobacks) and Leslie found out through first hand experience when her Rome highback completely broke while riding.
Throughout the week the qualifiers have been going on at Breckenridge for the Totino’s Open aka Dew Tour and while I missed them, I was happy to come down for the finals today and tomorrow. Waking up to this view of Breckenridge Mountain this morning was amazing. [singlepic id=7102 w=400 h=267 float=] I wasn’t sure what to expect with the Totino’s Open/Dew Tour at Breckenridge after watching the events earlier this week, I definitely thought it was the commercialized version of snowboarding. I was kind of blown away by the sponsors that have their hand in snowboarding but as a result it was a huge turnout from crowds. [singlepic id=7115 w=400 h=267 float=] I went out last night to the bars which was a lot of fun but definitely meant a later start this morning, unfortunately missing the women’s pipe finals. As much as I love watching and promoting women, the men go higher and bigger. [singlepic id=7095 w=400 h=267 float=] It’s been an interesting journey when it comes to being recognized as a form of media by major outlets & contests. Luckily for me, the blog has been tremendous in the growth and recognition so that I can get […]

I’ve been feeling under the weather but that didn’t stop me from heading down to Summit County for two days of riding. Friday was the perfect day to spend at Breckenridge and even though the crowds came out that couldn’t take away from the bluebird weather and fun being outside in the sun. I picked up Tom the skier on the way into Breckenridge and we hit up the mountain together, skier and snowboarder friendship. We parked in the free lot and took the shuttle over to the mountain. It was so warm by the time we arrive that I just wore my Burton windstopper hoodie over a t-shirt. Breckenridge from Peak 8 [singlepic id=6891 w=400 h=300 float=] I put aside the Ultrafear and took out the Signal Omni today to check it out on the hardpacked conditions at Breckenridge. I’ll definitely be putting a review up on it soon for everyone who inquired about it.
Despite being a passholder for Vail Resorts, I tend to avoid the mountains in the early season because of the long lines but eventually I make my way there for the fun terrain. I’ve been feeling sick and running on little sleep, but I made my way to Breckenridge with Tom for an early day of shredding. Snowboarders and skiers can shred together in harmony. The best part of the friendship is using his poles or getting pulled on cat tracks. [singlepic id=6826 w=400 h=300 float=] Our goal was as many runs before the crowds arrive and leave when they do. There was a slight frosting of new snow overnight that made for some small powder turns on the mountain or groomers whichever you preferred.
