Snowcial was winding down on Saturday but it meant the perfect timing for a full day on the slopes with everyone who attended the conference. I worked in the morning before heading onto the slopes to join the group for lunch and Epic Mix Racing. I hadn’t tried Epic Mix Racing yet but after the first lap and then more laps, it started getting addicting as I tried to beat my previous times and ride better against Lars. He was killing me on time. My only goal was to try to get lower than 20. Digi Dave was very serious about the Epic Mix Racing and required the tightest speed suit to get it done. We ended up getting this photo at lunch. After racing, we ended up doing pipe and park laps. It was a good way to end the day and after riding pipe the last couple days, finally started to air out again. In the evening, everyone came together for a dinner and awards. It was a blast catching up with everyone and watching the awards get handed out. The drinking out of the boot required more drinking out of the boot (rental boots) and I […]

When it came time to decide on what conference to attend this year, Snowcial was the one I really wanted to have happen. Mainly because it brings together many of the ski resorts and marketers whose passions lie in skiing and snowboarding. Not only that, Snowcial brings in incredible guest speakers that make you think outside the box and try to become better snow marketers. This was technically my third year of attending Snowcial but my first year of attending the full conference and days on snow. I arrived Wednesday in time for the welcome orientation and poker game. Thursday we hit the slopes in the morning to get in our laps before attending the afternoon presentations. It was a warm sunny day on the mountain. We cruised around the groomers getting the fun fast laps in before heading over to the pipe for morning pipe laps. I spent the day lapping with old and new friends. Lars, Mike from Transworld, Sonny and JP. We had a good crew, hauled and had fun. For the afternoon, it was time to head inside for the big list of speakers for the afternoon. We had David Armano from Edelman Digital, Dean Eckels […]

The weather in Lake Tahoe can switch rapidly. One day it’ll be bare roads with spring like slushy conditions and a couple days later it’ll be dumping snow with a total winter appearance. I made sure that I was in Tahoe for Monday morning’s storm and heading to Sierra at Tahoe for the day. Sierra at Tahoe is just down the highway from South Lake Tahoe. If the roads are dry, it can be pretty quick but today there was new snow and chain restrictions so it took a tad longer. Upon arriving, the snow was starting to pile up with huge snowflakes coming down and we were stoked! Ashley and I made it just in time to have Lauren join us for a day of shred. The moment I knew it was going to be a good day is when I was riding to the chairlift with this much snow collecting on my board. The snow report was saying 6 inches but it definitely felt like more out on the mountain and the snow kept coming down. Thankfully Lauren was our tour guide for the day and immediately brought us to West Bowl for powder turns. The latest storm […]

I had been hoping to return to Tahoe before the season ended since I had my Tahoe Pass and wanted to spend time on the mountain with friends. The time finally came when flights were affordable, access was easy into Reno and my friends had time off from work to ride and hang out. It’s been a rough season for Tahoe, definitely not the normal Tahoe year for snowfall but it doesn’t mean the mountain is bad. It’s not, the groomers are fun, the parks are great and there’s a lot less people up on the mountains. It felt good to return to sunshine for a day of snowboarding and I Snowboarding is so much better when you have someone to share it with. I spent today riding with my friend Ashley, we both worked at Mammoth together and had a blast venturing into park with Kumara later on in the day. Of course we also stretched after a couple laps to really warm up. Compared to a month ago, the parks at Northstar have grown up quite a bit with features. The pipe is up and running, the park has the main line and now branches off into a […]

You can always count on Snowcial to bring together creative minds, social skills and skiers/snowboarders to Heavenly Resort. Last year I got my first taste of it and this year, I attended the welcome party and one day of snowboarding to celebrate the fun event. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend the whole weekend of events since I’m traveling up to Washington but the 24 hours with everyone was a blast. Last night, Snowcial kicked off with the welcome party and poker tournament at Harvey’s Resort in South Lake Tahoe. The hashtag #snowcial has been blowing up with resort and industry skiers and snowboarders making their way to the event. I headed to the event with Ashley Smith who is now working at Heavenly. [singlepic id=12878 w=500 h=500 float=] The fun part of the night is always catching up, meeting new people and playing in the Poker Tournament. This year I did much better at the Blackjack but really sucked at the Poker Tournament. It was a blast being able to hang out with Chris Rudolph from Stevens Pass, Joe Johnson from the Canyons, the marketing team and my buddy Ashley from Heavenly, Harvey and Henrik from Freeskier Magazine, Jon from Snowboard […]

Things are about to change in Tahoe; the sunshine has disappeared and clouds are starting to reappear on the mountains. It’s a sign that snow is coming. After the dismal conditions at Mammoth, I headed north to get in soft groomer laps at Northstar today. The decision paid off with long laps, runs through the park and a fun day riding by myself at Northstar. It was a colder day on the slopes, I brought my facemask to stay a bit warmer while riding. The clouds made it so there was some flatlight conditions on the slopes. But the mountain was pretty quiet, the park was the busiest run and it wasn’t even that busy. I got in a good amount of laps before meeting Adam at the base. It’s safety month on the slopes and Northstar put up a bunch of signs to re-iterate skiing and snowboarding safely on the mountain.

After a late night with the ShreddyTimes crew, today started with a beautiful view of Lake Tahoe and a fun day of shred on the slopes. Sometimes the best cure for a late night is getting moving and turning again. Ashley and I headed back to Northstar to get in a couple midday laps together before I headed back to Mammoth and she headed back to South Lake Tahoe. We headed into the Village and grabbed coffee before hitting the slopes. The sun was shining, groomers were groomed and the runs were almost to ourselves. After a couple warm-up laps, it was time to get into the park and just lap our favorite doable features. I was really stoked on Ashley getting comfortable on the flat boxes in the park especially since they had bombholes after the boxes that you had to ride out of. The Shaun White pipe opened up at noon (it was closed for Revolution Tour practice in the morning) so we headed there for a humble lap through. Humble because everyone else was airing out of the pipe and we just took it easy, cruising up the walls. Ended the afternoon early so I could make the […]

With no new snow in California and the roads clear to explore, it meant heading up to Northstar for a couple days to get in riding time. I was really stoked because it meant being able to hang out with the Shreddy Times crew when we got off the mountain. I made the drive from Mammoth to Northstar in the morning just in time to meet my friend Ashley on the slopes for a day of shred. Conditions since the last time I visited are more hardpacked and some icy spots but coverage is good and you have a ton of riding terrain open (including long runs) and the parks are on dial for the Revolution Tour. We explored the mountain in the morning and rode as many lifts as we could find. After a couple long runs on the backside, we headed to Zephyr Lodge to check it out and then back to the parks to work on our skills (more like non-skills). In the park at the end of the day we finally met up with Jenise and got in a couple laps with her. She’s going to be competing in the Revolution Tour so it was fun […]

We opened last Thursday for the season but I was gone for an extended weekend so didn’t get to ride Mammoth till today. Conditions were hardpacked still early season snow with bluebird skies. There weren’t too many people on the slopes so each run you pretty much went right up to the gates. I headed out with my co-worker Lauren for a much needed ride break. New season and new gear! Over the summer, someone requested the Oakley airbreak goggles and I made sure to get them for this winter. Today was day one of trying them out. I was actually surprised to see how well they fit with my Smith helmet. Before I got my iPhone I was keeping tabs of what apps to download for snowboarding and alpine replay came up. It basically uses your phone to track your stats on the mountain. I started using it for the last two runs of the day to get an idea of my vertical, speed and tons of other cool stuff. One of the new improvements at Mammoth this year was RFID gates. I’ve used them before and it’s pretty easy to get through and onto the chairlift. I do […]

Imagine pre-1995 clubs, old school outfits and lots of adult beverages mixed in with nine holes of golf at Sierra Star Golf Course in Mammoth Lakes, CA. That was the 2nd Annual Shit Club Golf Tournament today – designed to play with shitty clubs. Mammoth Snowboard Team coach Ben Wisner and Mammoth Sponsorship Manager Robb Hewett started the golf tournament last year and kept the tournament word of mouth for the second year with a lot of local Mammoth employees, friends and industry folk. For many of skiers and snowboarders, the game of golf is a good way to pass by the summer. For me it’s been a neglected sport but one I’ve enjoyed since I was a kid. Despite this being a snowboard blog, I like to post the occasional fun activity that’s not snowboarding specific. [singlepic id=12399 w=300 h=533 float=] There were many rules in place, if you cheated – you ran naked. If you had clubs newer than 1995 – you couldn’t use them. Old school outfits were appreciated. We met up at Sierra Star at 10am for the registration, plopped down the $50 for the 9 holes of round with golf cart, lunch and beers.
