It’s been quite the week with my personal life but the latest storm delivered a good amount of fresh snow that was calling my name and today was the day. I woke up early this morning to bluebird skies and hit up the mountain just in time to meet up with Daniel for our powder fix. It felt so good to be back in the powder. The first runs I didn’t even take the camera out except for a second to try to grab a shot of what was in front of me for most of the morning. [singlepic id=10872 w=500 h=281 float=] Daniel laying back real hard [singlepic id=10873 w=500 h=281 float=] Daniel getting a nice spray of snow up [singlepic id=10875 w=500 h=281 float=] Daniel on the chair 20 drop [singlepic id=10876 w=500 h=281 float=] The conditions were great but the lines weren’t. Since it was sunny out, there was a ton of people on the slopes and when I left, I hadn’t heard if the top opened or not. I definitely wanted more turns but also have been dealing with quite a bit at home that I felt I should head home after half a day. Luckily […]

The numbers keep adding up, 8ft, 10ft, 11ft. Each day there’s more snow on the mountain that’s turning into a good base for the rest of the season. Last night we got another foot on the mountain and in some spots, it meant a couple feet deep of snow. Adam and Ben from TWS Snowboarding arrived in town late last night and we hit up the mountain today for an early morning of riding before I headed into work. The first stop this morning was chair #22 which was ripe for the picking and one of my favorite lifts so far when the top of the mountain isn’t open. [singlepic id=10364 w=300 h=533 float=] I had the helmet cam on so captured a couple of the runs again. It was definitely a day to have the cam! Mammoth 12/22/10 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. Ben and myself on the lift [singlepic id=10365 w=1000 h=533 float=] Plenty of powder to be enjoyed. It was definitely a great day, one run in particular was insane. Just untouched powder and just me making tracks.
What a day. Last night I headed to bed early because you know the early bird gets the worm. Well the early Shay gets a powder day! This morning, it was over knee deep in the parking lot and when I texted my trusty snow reporter friend Ashley, she said 3+ feet on the mountain plus it was still snowing. I hitched a ride with Daniel to get to the mountain early and headed up to the village for the gondola. [singlepic id=10340 w=500 h=281 float=] The snow was exactly as reported except deeper. The first lift up, the first tracks looked amazing but then you started to notice the struggle of the first tracks due to the deepness of the snow. We hit up chair #8 a couple of laps and realized that the mellow pitch of the terrain was not working this deep of snow. I’ve never seen so many people stuck on the mountain and it was easy to get stuck. I got stuck 3 times, tumbled head over heels 2 times and got air probably 4 times without meaning to. [singlepic id=10341 w=300 h=533 float=] We decided it was time for chair #22 and […]

Over a foot in 24 hours. Definitely a powder day and a damn good one to be out on the mountain. I headed out at lunch time to get my turns in and found that even at lunch time there was still powder to be enjoyed. I met up with Sam from Red Bull who is in town for the weekend. We started with a couple people and each run lost more and more until it was just us enjoying the powder turns in the trees. [singlepic id=10337 w=500 h=281 float=] The powder was good, some rough spots on chair #22 where rocks were barely covered but lower in the trees it was a blast making turns. Deep in spots and still had some freshies. [singlepic id=10338 w=300 h=533 float=] Closed runs for avalanche danger. The top of the mountain was closed due to winds and avy danger, definitely not worth it to duck these ropes and deal with the consequences. [singlepic id=10336 w=500 h=281 float=] I’m still learning the mountain, haven’t done all the chairlifts or runs but I took Sam to one spot I had been…and learned that on a powder day it meant hiking out. Still it […]

Last night was the first snowfall of the week; today we got over a foot of snow and this weekend a storm is supposed to bring in up to 8 feet of snow. Yep I’m crossing my fingers for that much snowfall to arrive over the weekend! It was the perfect lunch break to get some powder turns in and enjoy some of the goodies that ullr delivered up. It’s funny to say but some parts of Mammoth remind me of Washington riding and make me feel back at home. Today I ventured out to chair 8 to meet up with Daniel and it was a blast from the past riding the chair…except being at Mammoth. [singlepic id=10329 w=500 h=281 float=] A huge thanks goes out to P3 Snowboard Shop in Mammoth. I totally support shops that have demo boards available especially now living at Mammoth where there are less on-snow demos than Colorado. It’s been an interesting switch to go from 10 demo days a year to 1 or 2 days which means relying on snowboard companies to directly ship to me, reps to let me borrow gear or shops that have demo boards in order to get reviews […]

Each day that I ride, I’m finding new terrain, new runs and getting a better taste of what’s to come this winter. It’s a rad experience to be riding somewhere totally new and calling it my home mountain. Today Dan and I headed out for some lunch laps and made our way over to Chair #4 to meet up with Ashley for a couple laps. We ended up seeing chair #22 moving and headed there just in time to make the 4th chairlift up to the top. I had heard that the avy chutes offered up some good turns when the wind blows the snow around. [singlepic id=10293 w=300 h=533 float=] Ashley and Dan at the top of chair #22 strapped in and about to drop into the avy chutes [singlepic id=10295 w=300 h=533 float=] Looking down the chute [singlepic id=10294 w=500 h=281 float=] The first turns were a bit sketchy with some rocks but after that it opened up into deeper powder turns that made it all worth it.
