It’s that time of year! When the mountains are calling, the snow is falling, and all it takes is a 2 hour flight to head to Steamboat Springs, Colorado.Years ago, I used to live in Steamboat and now I’m happy that I can make the annual trek back to the town and mountain. I still have my favorite trails, powder stashes, lifts, and spots around town that I enjoy visiting. We packed up our gear on Sunday morning, headed to SeaTac and hopped the direct flight from Seattle to Hayden/Steamboat Springs on Alaska Airlines. I even packed my adventure socks – because I was ready for adventure! It’s been hit or miss with winter conditions around the Western US. So far Steamboat Ski Resort had only received 142″ of snowfall but they’ve done an amazing job in getting the mountain 100% open and in good condition for skiing and snowboarding. While it looked like a storm would arrive during our stay, most of the morning reports were 1-2″ of snowfall – just enough to freshen up the mountain with a nice coat of white. I used my MAX pass to take care of my time on the slopes. No matter […]

Years ago, I used to live in a quaint mountain town called Steamboat Springs, Colorado where I’d spend every day riding the local mountain. Even though it’s been over 10 years since I called Steamboat home, it’s one of my favorite places to visit because it holds a special spot near and dear to my heart. There’s still the favorite stashes, the local watering holes, and the amazing people who make up the community around the mountain. I’m lucky to return to my old stomping grounds at least once a year. Thanks to the direct flight from Seattle to Hayden, it was a 2 hour flight and 45 minute drive before we were slopeside at Steamboat Resort. We even enjoy a First Class upgrade on the way out. We arrived in the evening but that meant we’d be fully charged to hit the slopes the next day. It’s been a good year for Steamboat with the town receiving over 230″ of snowfall so far. It looked like we might be lucky with our trip and a storm rolling through but it shifted course on our last day in town. Even while there was no new snow, we did manage to […]

When I found out I’d be making the trip back to Steamboat, I knew I was in NEED of a powder day. I needed a guaranteed good powder day on my snowboard so I immediately looked up Steamboat Powdercats to see if there was any availability in the cat tour groups while I was in town.Luckily for me, there was room in the cats. I booked the intermediate level II group (because quite frankly I just wanted the trees and powder without the “we gotta rip this mentality.” Leading up to the trip, I was pretty sick. In fact I almost canceled but I was so looking forward to this day that I needed to go. I would suck it up, pull through and ride hard. There’s always time to feel sick later right? I’m really glad I didn’t cancel and pulled through a tough girl mentality because the day ended up being exactly what I needed. Powder turn after powder turn after powder day. The morning of the trip I checked in at the Steamboat powdercats office, signed a couple waivers, got my gear checked out (just in case borrowed a Never Summer demo board in case my wax […]

One of the best perks of my job at Alaska Airlines is being able to travel to new mountains. To celebrate our inaugural flight from Los Angeles to Crested Butte, Colorado a few of us from the marketing team were able to hop on the flight, document the inaugural experience, and spend a couple days skiing and snowboarding at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. We had a truly great trip. It was my first time visited Crested Butte despite having lived in Colorado years ago. The town was quaint but had an action-packed main street, Elk Street with shops, galleries, restaurants and bars. We stayed at the Grand Lodge which was conveniently located to the base of Crested Butte Mountain Resort. It was an easy walk to the slopes each day and despite being up on the mountain, they offered great service into getting us into town. The skiing and snowboarding conditions were ideal for December. We had a couple days of sunny Colorado bluebird weather but there was enough fresh snow to still enjoy power turns. Since it was between the holidays, less people were on the slopes which meant more exploring for us!

I work right near the gondola so laps are easy and fun during the day. Today I was trying out the Never Summer Pandora with my Burton Escapade bindings. It’s fun to be on the women’s equivalent of the evo since I’ve spent so much time on the evo and not yet the Pandora. I’m really happy with the escapades, definitely more response than I’m used to but in a good way. It was a beautiful day to be outdoors, much warmer than expected and conditions were mostly soft in spots.
After taking a day off to relax at the Vail Cascade Resort and Spa, it was time to hit the slopes today to finally explore Vail Mountain. One of the most amazing parts about Vail is when you look at it from hwy 70, it doesn’t look like much but what’s hidden behind that first slope is a massive resort filled with everything you’d want. In one day, I rode park, groomers, leftover powder, steeps, bowls and trees. This morning, I grabbed my snowboard gear from the valet and got my ticket at the ticket office right out in front of the Vail Cascade Resort and Spa. Chair 20 – Cascade Lift is right outside the door so I hopped on the lift and headed up. The first lap was a mix of groomers until I found the park on my way down to the Lionshead base at Vail. I met up with Sara at the base and started my tour for the morning. A huge thanks to Sara (@mtnPRgirl) who was my tour guide for the morning and took me around the mountain to explore China Bowl, Blue Sky Basin and the front of the mountain. It’s always great […]

For four years I lived in a beautiful mountain town called Steamboat Springs, Colorado and I still consider it an amazing place to live. The mountain offers up some of the best aspen riding on more mellow terrain, the town has a great relaxed vibe and everyone loves to be in the outdoors. I was really happy to be able to finally return to my former mountain for a day of riding and get to see old friends in a quick visit. I was lucky to ride the record breaking year at Steamboat so I know how good it can be and while they haven’t had as much of a strong season, the storms have started to come in again. It was a great day for groomer laps (mostly due to knowing the trees might not have enough coverage yet) so we ended up charging some of my favorite runs from the past. Since I moved away almost two years ago, the town and mountain has continued with new buildings, businesses and upgrades. It’s rad to be able to return as a tourist and experience the mountain from a new angle. During my time at Steamboat, I had an amazing […]

For the next 10 days I’ll be on the road, in the tradeshow for four days, on the snow demos for two days and finally relaxing towards the end of the trip. I’ll be attending the SIA Tradeshow as media for Shayboarder.com. Over the next couple days you’ll see a lot of 2013 gear, twitter updates (@Shayboarder), instagram photos (Shayboarder), Facebook Updates (/Shayboarder) and a whole lotta fun in the process. After the tradeshow, I’ll immediately head into the mountains for the on-snow portion at Winter Park then on a mini vacation roadtrip. After I get back in Washington, I’ll start the constant updates from SIA with product information and 2012 reviews. Here’s what is coming up for the next 10 days! SIA Tradeshow in Denver Watch out Denver, the snowboard and ski industry is coming to Colorado! The SIA Tradeshow is an industry event where the next year’s gear is released.
It feels great to be back in Colorado. It’s well worth the drive from California for a ton of events going on, seeing friends and better conditions. Today we headed to Keystone to get in some early morning laps before the Grand Prix at Copper in the afternoon. The snow conditions had good coverage, parks were filled with skiers and riders jam packed to hit every feature possible and the mountain was busy but you still had space to yourself each run. I’ve been pretty stoked on Epicmix this year so we made sure to get shots on the mountain. Here’s Dan and myself at the top! Keystone has A51 park and a stellar crew to keep the park in great shape despite the train of skiers/riders hitting them all day. There were a ton of features in the parks today and multiple jump lines for any level. The big jump line at Keystone has three huge hits and a constant stream of skiers and riders hitting them. Love watching from the lift. I opted for the easier side of the park, playing on the flat boxes and a buried metal tube before cruising the groomers down to Peru lift.
Colorado has played a pivotal role in snowboarding. There is so much history of snowboard production, riding and resorts in this area that it was only a matter of time before it was collected and shown to the masses. Thanks to Trent Bush, David Allen and Kurt Olesek there is finally a place in the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Museum for the history of snowboarding. Tonight was the Grand Opening at the museum in Vail and well worth a seven hour drive from Utah to make it in time for the gathering of friends, industry and media to see a private glimpse. Upon arrival, the snowboard portion was packed with people. The amazement of the progressiong of snowboarding and the history told in words and photos. Local brands like Twist, Solid, Never Summer and many more were shown on the walls with first productions. Never Summer’s history in Colorado was clear with a showcase of their first production board and the 20th anniversary model. Owner Tracey Canaday showing his skills on camera with the photo.
