A couple weeks ago I was watching Copper put the finishing touch on their always perfect Superpipe and now I”m seeing the best riders in the world completely dominant it. Today was the Grand Prix Superpipe Finals at Copper Mountain in Colorado. The best pipe riders throwing down for their chance at winning cash, getting points and proving their skills in the stunt ditch. In previous years at Grand Prix, the weather has never cooperated but this year it was a beautiful December day with bluebird skies, no winds and great conditions. I had to chance to meet up with Taylor from AlpineReplay as I was on my way to the truck to get my camera gear. Then it was time to head up to the Superpipe to get some shots and catch the action of the finals when they started. It was a busy Saturday on the slopes and the bars at the base of the mountain offered up perfect views of the action. Plenty of people lined the pipe fence to see their favorite riders go big.
Timing worked out perfectly that I could spend today on the mountain just in time to check out the USASA Nationals at Copper. I did take a couple laps at Breckenridge this morning, before heading over to Copper to take in the afternoon of riding, Nationals and the Monster Mash pipe contest (look for that post next!). [singlepic id=8642 w=300 h=400 float=] Copper is holding the USASA Nationals this past week which means boardercross, slopestyle, halfpipe, racing for snowboarders of all ages competing for Gold, Silver and Bronze. I arrived to Copper, hit up the Windell’s tent to say hi to Tim Windell and then ran right into the Carrigan family where Maggie Rose had just taken home 2nd place for Giant Salom. [singlepic id=8641 w=400 h=300 float=] We headed up to take a lap on the mountain which was beautiful out today. I ended up taking a good couple laps for the afternoon to check out the events that were ending, like slopestyle and boardercross.
The Copper Superpipe opened today as the first halfpipe in the United States and during a non-Olympic year it might have gone unnoticed but with the Olympics around the corner it was a very busy superpipe training day. Tom and I headed over to Copper to enjoy an easy day on the slopes and get some turns in before I headed home to Steamboat. I’m still feeling sick and under the weather so it probably wasn’t the best idea to hit the slopes but I have yet to take it easy. The best part of the day was the lack of crowds at Copper, it was a lot less busy than I expected it to be. Waiting to drop in [singlepic id=6897 w=400 h=300 float=] Even before I got on the chairlift, I ran into Louie Vito in line and we caught up quickly. He gave me props on the 686 KR3W Insulated Jacket I’ve been rocking. His training has begun for the Olympics so definitely wish him luck! The Terrain Park at Copper under American Eagle chairlift. I’m able to hit the first two boxes now, flat box and flat-down box. Woohoo!
Copper Mountain had opened up on Friday and since I’m a season passholder it made perfect sense to spend Sunday at Copper. I carpooled with Lauren to Copper and met up with Chris from Snowboarderguide to shred for the day before I carpooled back with him to Steamboat. Today’s demo was Capita and Union with the surprise company of Laura Hadar, Capita’s first female pro rider on the team who was around the tent and enjoying riding. I’ve met Laura once before at SIA and it was cool to catch up with her again, she started her own blog for a glimpse into hadeslife. [singlepic id=6730 w=400 h=300 float=] I ended up demoing only one board today, took out the Capita Horrorscope with Union Forces to see how it did in the park and freeriding for this year. Didn’t ride differently than last time I rode it, but I’ll still put up a review on it again. It was another warm bluebird day on the mountain so conditions were hardpacked at Copper. The park setup was pretty enjoyable and I found a couple features that I could hit no problem which made the day even more fun! My personal favorite […]

When I received the invitation to join Dragon Optics at Woodward at Copper during their camp session, I knew I couldn’t turn down such a fun opportunity to check out the camp and the team. A huge thanks to Alex Pashley for inviting me and letting me have a great first time at Woodward. This morning bright and early I made the trek to Copper, met up with Dragon Optics to spend the morning on-snow at the park and the afternoon indoors at the Barn. Along for the ride was Alex Pashley, Madison Ellsworth, Josh Sherman, Chad Otterstrom, Erich Dummer and Aaron Dodds. We later met up with Pat Moore who surprised everyone by being there. Everyone was super rad and chill to be around, it was fun just taking it in. [singlepic id=4921 w=400 h=300 float=] I made a video for the day with some outdoor footage and a whole lot of indoor footage so you can see exactly what Woodward looks like and what there is to offer. The indoor jump footage is fun to check out and if you stay till the end of the video you’ll get the unedited fun of Braveheart.
Have you ever dreamed of pulling a 900? What about a double corked 1080? Maybe your first 360? This summer with the Woodward Camp at Copper you can progress your own riding with the help of foam pits, trampolines and coaches so you don’t miss a beat from the terrain park as summer passes you by. [singlepic id=4905 w=300 h=300 float=] Woodward Camp at Copper gives you access to year round riding and skiing with various options for campers whether it’s the introductory session, drop in sessions or the actual summer camp. They are affordable which in this economic time is great to see that you could try it and check it out without breaking the bank. I think it’s great to see another option on the table for skiers and riders that want to progress their riding in a safe and secure location that can operate year round. They’ve also got sponsored events going on, with Dragon Optics sponsoring Session 2 and Betty Rides taking over Session 6 offering up team riders and giveaways to check out. Copper is only a hour and a half drive from where I live so I’m hoping to make it down to Woodward […]

Yesterday was a mess in Colorado with the snowstorm that came through. Between Denver and Summit County, I witnessed a rollover accident 10 feet in front of me, drove in the worst conditions I’ve seen and managed to make it up to the mountains before the highway closed. With the snow falling throughout the night…today was a great day at Copper for their closing weekend. I did a mini video with some footage of pow and park riding and the exceptional snowblades on the mountain. Copper 4/18/09 from Shayboarder on Vimeo.
Last Sunday, the USASA Nationals began at Copper Mountain. 6 days of competitions began with 1,600 amateur athletes throwing down in halfpipe, slopestyle, giant slalom, slalom and boardercross. Today was the 4th day of competitions and a beautiful bluebird day to watch the events at Copper Mountain. [singlepic id=5737 w=400 h=267 float=] The fine crew at Copper Mountain and USASA granted me access so I drove down to watch my favorite two events for the day: Halfpipe and Boardercross. It was my first time at a USASA event and I got to see some amazing riders leading the future of snowboarding. I was only able to partake in one day of competitions unfortunately but it was a great time and glad I did at least one day! [singlepic id=5738 w=396 h=400 float=] Between the Boardercross and halfpipe events, there were plenty of coaches, competitors, staff, patrol and spectators to watch the action. [singlepic id=5739 w=400 h=267 float=] The competitions started early, with riders practicing before 8:30am so I made a couple laps to see where the competitions were and headed to watch the halfpipe as the 14 years and younger boys competed. I saw some local Steamboat/SSWSC riders but […]
