It’s the second day of the Burton demo tour, so today meant an early start to make the most of the mountain with the early groomed conditions. The crowds have died down from the holidays so most of the day wasn’t too busy in the Chair 6 lift line. My camera battery died early in the day so most of the photos were taken on my iphone. The demo tent kept busy most of the day and each time there was a line to be able to get the next board/binding to try out. I ended up riding the Burton Nug with Scribe bindings, Burton Whammy Bar with Prophet bindings and Burton Lipstick with Stilletto bindings.

It’s a good time of year when the Burton demo tour rolls into town. It means getting on the snow to try out a bunch of gear in three days. Today was busy in the tents as the masses came up to try out the 2012 gear and get a feel for what Burton offers. It was an interesting day to demo on the icy, hardpacked snow and get a good feel for the board handling. While in line for demos, I heard from the girl working the tent that Burton wouldn’t blame the riders for impact from the bad conditions, so that’s a plus. I ended up trying out three setups for the day: Burton Feelgood Flying V with Diode bindings, Burton Aftermath with Malavita Restricted EST bindings and the Burton Fortress with Burton Escapade bindings. Halfway through the day I ran into my old co-worker Delaney to take a couple laps together and got a couple shots of him riding in the parks. A bunch of features are missing from the easier Forest Trail park so you only have a jump line and a couple boxes to play on. Looking forward to demoing more boards this weekend and […]

The good news? The mountain is open. The bad news? Holiday crowds are riding limited terrain and manmade snow conditions. Today we headed up together for laps but stuck to South Park to ride the park. It’s frustrating because I’d love to ride other stuff but there’s really nothing open other than parks and riding outside of parks in my opinion is a recipe for injury. There are so many people on the limited runs that you feel like you will hit at any moment. We didn’t last long, just a couple hours and called it when the lines got long after lunch. Today I tried out the Spy Platoon goggles on the mountain. Here’s my best impression of the view, it’s like being in a big fishbowl with a huge view of the world. The peripheral is good but the vision from cheeks to forehead is insane. I’ll be out riding tomorrow to get my fix but probably skipping out the rest of this week. It’s just too busy and not enough snow to make it worth going.

Exactly one year ago today, I was riding over three feet of snow and this year I’m riding manmade snow with really sketchy conditions. It’s pretty crazy the variety of seasons that can come to Mammoth. I’ve been out of town the last couple days to spend time with family and came back to a busy Mammoth Mountain. Kicked off the shoes and put on the boots at chair 4 to avoid the crowds. Instead of walking on snow to get to the lifts, it’s dirt and mud. It’s pretty eye opening to see how much snow you are riding on top of and it’s not much right now. I met up with the skier and we ended up lapping South Park for most of the day. The park has a mix of jumps to a couple rails with the Jamie Lynn artwork and then a roller rhythm section that is a disaster waiting to happen. People would take them too deep and end up crashing hard in the flats. I had to laugh at the Spy Les Ettes goggle strap I’ve been rocking…pretty funny to wear that in the lift lines. Be on the lookout for a review of […]
