Since 1979, Dakine has been making a variety of products from luggage to gloves, backpacks to accessories that are designed to be functional for any skateboarder, mountain biker, outdoorsmen, snowboarder or skier. The basic principals are quality, function and style which are present throughout their entire line. The Dakine Headquarters are based in Hood River, Oregon. The perfect location for year-round outdoor adventurers and that clearly shows in the products they create, the offices full of toys and the people behind the brand. On my way back from Mt Hood, it was worth the drive to Hood River to stop in and see what the Dakine headquarters were like. Upon entering the building, the walls are surrounded with images from surf to snow, bike to just plain gnarly. Their past, present and future are clearly defined on the walls throughout the entire building. The door of Dakine stickers go back quite a few years. I recognized the first Dakine sticker I had from the late 90’s almost immediately. Pretty rad to see the collection present in the production room. One of the best perks about being located in Hood River is designing a pack, building it and testing it within […]

Intended Purpose: The Girls Heli Pro is designed specifically for women riders who want a serious backpack to take out snowboarding. Size: The Girls Heli Pro is 18L which keeps it pretty simple for the mountain. It’s not bulky, it’s a sleek design that won’t take over your back on the mountain. There is a small pocket for sunglasses, keys, ipods, etc. Then the front pocket can be used for backcountry gear (fits a shovel, probe, tools) or used for camera gear. The larger pocket can fit a 17″ macbook or whatever else you want to travel with. Appearance: I received the Heli Pro in the women’s Obsidian color which is basically black with an interior flower block pattern that isn’t too girly since it’s mostly blue. The pack itself from the outside has subtle hints that it’s the women’s pack but barely noticeable. Ease of Travel: I first took this pack to Alaska where it spent the whole month traveling around with me, from car rides to backcountry trips, snowcat to snowmobile. After Alaska, the pack traveled to Whistler, White Pass, Bachelor and now it’s just traveling around for day trips. It’s easy to use with the pockets and […]

Intended Purpose: The carry-on roller matches its name. It’s built for traveling by plane, easy to carry on and quick to roll through the airport with. It’s compact and lightweight with enough room for your travel needs. It comes in women’s designs and men’s designs so you don’t have to sport the basic black carry-on this year (and blend in). Size: The Dakine carry-on roller is 36L with 2200 cu. in. of space. It’s small enough to easily fit on the airplane and even the smaller airplanes (into ski resort towns). I’ve found that it’s enough space for a weekend trip with a couple changes of clothes and shoes. It also works for trips by car. Appearance: I’ve been really loving plaid this year so when it came time to pick a design, I went with the Tartan plaid option. It’s a mix of blue, green and pink plaid. The inside liner of the Blue Tartan is a bit flowery but I like that it’s in the inside liner and well done. Ease of Travel: When you fly you want a carry on that’s easy to deal with, that rolls and that fits so you aren’t stuck in the aisle, […]

For 2012, the Signature Series is back, showcasing a collaborative effort between team riders and in-house designers. This year you can see collaborations from Tanner Hall, Eric Jackson, Eric Pollard, Wolle Nyvelt, Austin Smith, Sean Pettit, Annie Boulanger. Dakine’s re-gen collection offers an eco-friendlier alternative. They are built with recycled PET fabric from discarded plastic bottles and regrind buckles from excess plastic materials. This is only a sneak peak at the 2011/2012 Dakine lineup. Dakine Crossfire Glove Features synthetic suede with silicone grip palm, nylon/poly with DWR treatment, 150g tricot lining, slip-on cuff closure, no insert, no insulation, nose wipe thumb panels. Warmth index=2.
Intended Purpose: The mission pack is a backpack meant to handle a day on the snow, a day walking to class or just a day traveling. For the snowboarder, it offers enough features in a smaller size so you don’t feel overloaded on the back and in a variety of colorways. Size: The Dakine mission pack is 25L and weighs 2lbs. I was actually surprised it’s 25L because when I compare to my Burton Zoom pack which is 28L it seems like the Zoom has a lot more room. But the smaller mission pack I actually like because I never feel overloaded in it, no matter how much crap I put in there this summer it felt comfortable and still small on my back when riding down the mountain. There’s enough pockets for everything you need but without packing your whole room in it. Appearance: I received the Windells/Dakine Mission Pack this summer and so it’s branded with the Windells logo. It’s black but the windells logo is embossed in tiny print all over the backpack and there’s a couple blue Windells logos that are noticeable. I like the colorway a lot because blue/black are two favorite colors. This pack […]

Jennifer: I was very blessed to meet the right people at the right time. I started exposing myself to the industry in High School at local snowboard comps, hanging out at shops and at Hood in the summers and working at Ski Bonkers. The Northwest snow scene is pretty small. I went to school with Julia Aiken, we both studied Industrial Design and she took me under her wing. She was the one that connected me with Kyre Byram, Roxy Hardgood Manager, where I did an internship with Kyre which later turned into a freelancing job.
