When I used to live in Steamboat, a trip to Loveland was always worth the effort; they offered a ton of demos, early and late seasons and a mellow environment that was always a fun day on the mountain. Now that I live in Summit County and since today was my day off, I headed to Loveland to check out the on-snow demos from Never Summer, Capita, Arbor and Flux. It felt great to meet up with familiar faces on the slopes. The first laps I took were with Gags and we lapped park where he put me to shame on the park features. The cold kept the lines moving quickly and there really wasn’t much of a wait for most of the afternoon. Even though it was a demo day, I only rode one board other than my own. I got to try the Capita Scotty Stevens with Union contact bindings. Today was more about snowboarding than reviewing gear but reviews will start coming soon. Been waiting for mountain conditions to go beyond groomers. In the afternoon, finally met up with Phillip who was a good friend in Steamboat and now reps for companies. We ended up lapping the […]

When it comes to buying snowboard gear, there’s only one guaranteed way to know if you like a snowboard or not. It all comes down to demo’ing snowboard gear. Whether it’s from your local shop, mountain or borrow from a friend…demo’ing will give you 100% feedback on whether the board suits you. Most years I spend a couple days demo’ing boards or borrowing boards which are where the majority of these reviews come from. It lets me get on gear that I can try without buying and be able to give an idea of how it handles. Of course I enjoy reviewing boards so you have a better idea but the surefire way to know is you try it for yourself! [singlepic id=10236 w=500 h=375 float=] What is a demo? Demo’ing is when you can borrow a current snowboard whether from a company or shop. Generally mountains has demo days where companies will let you take out their boards for free. Shops will offer demo boards for rental but it usually costs money (but you can apply the cost of the demo to buying the board from them). The demo boards are used or ridden a couple times but in […]

[singlepic id=5495 w=400 h=300 float=] So far for 2009-2010, I have ridden 43 snowboards that are in the review list here and the 09-10 season hasn’t even started so that means I have a lot more time to ride more 09-10 snowboards. There’s still a couple 09-10 reviews on the way. I welcome all responses for all types of boards/bindings, the most popular requested gear will go to the top of the list and this list will be in my pocket all season as I cross it off and write up a review on it. I understand that online reviews are hard to come by, some companies/models are even harder to find reviews on which is why I want your input on what you want to be reviewed. The demo season in CO starts […]

Ahh resort town living…it can be quite fun. Yesterday after riding, I came home and worked on the video then got back into my gear to ride down to the bar. I stayed at the bar with a crew of friends to chat and enjoy the night. I managed to make it home and slept in today but made it on the mountain before noon. Today was Steamboat’s demo day…we had Never Summer and Lib/GNU come out to do demos and its the only demo that we get during the year. Steamboat is not a popular demo mountain which bums me out.I talked Nate into coming out for some turns, he was helping Lib Tech at the tent. I met Nate through the blog and have met up with him down in summit during the early season riding. We met up with Jakub at the top of Storm and headed over to Sunshine to see how conditions were over there. It was tree riding in some heavy slushy chop but still not bad. The bad part was having to take the cat track to get back. Nate in the trees Jakub in the trees So I did get […]

Amy and I drove down to ride Copper today. It turned out to be a busy day on the slopes but a beautiful day out with demos to choose from. Every ride up the chair, I checked out the mound of snow soon to be Copper’s halfpipe. Copper usually has the first halfpipe in the United States and I really like riding halfpipe. The base area was packed with demo tents giving skiers and riders a chance to try out new gear. Reverse Cambers were very popular and constantly out on the mountain. The lines were long and the runs open were pretty packed at Copper today. It’s good riding another mountain but riding Copper in the early season always is not as fun as the other mountains. The main reason is the safety people to control the speed of skiers and riders coming down in a populated run. I understand it completely, but at the same time…I should see fairness. I typically see the ski racers flying down the run without being yelled at and I’m being waved to slow down. Or better yet, I should have pulled out the camera to record the safety person who was […]

I left Steamboat Springs this morning with the snow guns cranking away to make the lower mountain and base area covered with snow. Steamboat opens on the 26th so really looking forward to being able to ride my home mountain. Today at Loveland was the Christy Sports Demo. Also this weekend, Copper has demos going on so if you are in Colorado and want to try new gear…this is the weekend! The Christy Sports demo was very busy, lots of people trying out gear to decide what to buy. I came down alone for the day but was able to ride a couple more boards. Boards I rode today: Lib Skate Banana, Lib Dark Series, Salomon Official, Burton Women’s Supermodel, Burton Feelgood, and Rossignol One Mag. The One Mag is way too wide for me but I figured I had the chance to try it on icy spots for a reader and one run was interesting with my size 8 boots on it. I didn’t try any new bindings today, used my tigre’s most of the day except when riding Burton then I used escapades.Even with driving down alone and riding alone, met up with a couple old faces and […]

Today was day two of the demos at Loveland and in typical form it was snowing throughout the day. I arrived early and spent the day from one tent to another trying out boards. Conditions were better than yesterday, it wasn’t as cold and windy but it was still cold and windy. The snow conditions were better, less icy spots and some powder turns to be made. Loveland was prepping for Chair #2 to be open tomorrow and coverage looks a lot better after the recent snowfall. The powder wasn’t much but it was a good area to try out the boards in for the float factor. I found some goods but also found a buried log in the process causing me to do a nice tumble and roll in the powder. Gary and I on the chairlift I was able to demo Smith Heiress goggles for the day with gold sensor mirror lenses and I was impressed, good fit with my face and in the conditions today I had good visibility and no fogging. I checked them out in the AM while waiting for first run with Gags and I didn’t return them till 3pm.Made laps with a couple people […]

Today was an industry demo that was worth taking time off from work. I already had the time off due to my Vermont trip but that’s been cancelled so used the days to spend time on the slopes. I drove down to Loveland this morning to spend today and tomorrow on the slopes. It’s been snowing in the mountains and no exception at Loveland today as the temperatures stayed cold and unfortunately the wind was alive and kicking. Even with the demo going on for skiers and boarders, it wasn’t busy on the mountain despite the parking lot being almost full. So here’s the list of what I did demo today: Capita Horrorscope with Force bindings, K2 Believer with K2 Cinch Vette bindings, Burton Hero with Burton Escapade bindings, Burton Eco-nico with Burton Escapade bindings, Rome Anthem with Rome Madison bindings, Rome Vinyl with Rome Madison bindings and Flow Myriad with Flow NXT-AT bindings. Each board got at least 2 runs, the myriad and vinyl got 2 and all the others got at least 3. I spent the most time on the horrorscope in the morning. Off the top of my head, horrorscope was fun, hero was fun…two boards completely […]

Saturday night I attended the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) benefit in Breckenridge which was great, I’ll have more on the benefit later. A couple of us crashed in Frisco so we could ride today. After dealing with the long lines and mess of people yesterday, I was looking forward to Loveland today. For those not familiar, the reason the other mountains are so busy is they share the same pass. Loveland doesn’t share a pass with anyone and is totally worth it to not deal with crowds. Thanks to Duncan and John who make it so the magical riding happens. The other reason I was looking forward to Loveland is Never Summer was demoing today there. I really got my start just going to demo’s and getting to know the people turning the screws and now I enjoy being able to see them and catch up. Gags turning screws at the demo He just added Sales Manager to his title for Never Summer…much deserved to a hardworking man. A good collection of boards in a variety of sizes from Never Summer to demo. The rules of the demo…no rabid ferrets in the tent please.
