When it comes to buying snowboard gear, there’s only one guaranteed way to know if you like a snowboard or not. It all comes down to demo’ing snowboard gear. Whether it’s from your local shop, mountain or borrow from a friend…demo’ing will give you 100% feedback on whether the board suits you. Most years I spend a couple days demo’ing boards or borrowing boards which are where the majority of these reviews come from. It lets me get on gear that I can try without buying and be able to give an idea of how it handles. Of course I enjoy reviewing boards so you have a better idea but the surefire way to know is you try it for yourself! [singlepic id=10236 w=500 h=375 float=] What is a demo? Demo’ing is when you can borrow a current snowboard whether from a company or shop. Generally mountains has demo days where companies will let you take out their boards for free. Shops will offer demo boards for rental but it usually costs money (but you can apply the cost of the demo to buying the board from them). The demo boards are used or ridden a couple times but in […]

In November each year there are two days where a range of companies come to Loveland to give shop employees the chance to try out the latest gear. Each year I attend the shop demo to get a better understanding of what boards you guys want to know more about. This year I drove down with Philip from the Click and Doug to attend the demos together. Despite the economy there were still a good amount of snowboard companies on hand, this year we had Rome, K2, Nitro, Forum, Burton, Salomon, Arbor, Unity, Never Summer, Capita, Union, Flow, Ride, Head, LTD, Lamar, Lib Tech, Roxy, GNU, Bent Metal and I’m sure I’m forgetting some others that were there. [singlepic id=6778 w=400 h=300 float=] This year we had bluebird sunny skies and hardpacked snow on the mountain. By the end of the day we’d get icy spots but overall conditions were similiar for both days. I ended up trying out these setups: Burton Custom V-rocker, Burton Lexa bindings, Forum Youngblood Chillydog, Forum Destroyer Chillydog, Forum Shaka bindings, Ride Machete, Ride Sigma Movement bindings, Rome Postermania 1985, and Union Contact bindings before calling it a day. All of those will be coming […]

Well last night was a late night, stayed up partying and went to bed around 2am. This morning was a little rough but after some coffee I was awake and hanging in there. Here’s the video for day 3 of demos, today was just trying out a couple boards and having fun with friends while riding them. Rocky Mountain On-Snow 2009 Demo Day 3 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. I spent the first couple runs with Dan and Jay who were able to get away from the Lib tent. It was becoming a beautiful day, still cold but at least the sun was out and fun to ride the mountain with. My early morning was spent on the Park Pickle which was requested a couple times and glad I finally got on it because it was good. Real men wear pink pants K and myself taking a break Boards I rode today were: -GNU Park Pickle with Union Forces -GNU B-pro with Union Forces -Rossignol Angus with Union Forces -O-matic Extr-eco with Union Forces -Flow Era with NXT-AT’s -Rome Pusher with Rome United’s and Rome Madisons We ended the day on a high note, enjoying a cold beer in the sun.
The demo season is upon us here in Colorado. The majority of reviews of mine happen from these demo dates, so chances are if you are at a Colorado demo you might see me taking out boards as well. Most of these I grabbed and collected from resort websites and snowboard company websites. I’ll be updating this throughout the season as more CO demo dates get announced. Props to Burton for creating a facebook page for their demos in Colorado. I posted a blog before on basics of demo days, check it out here I suggest you check with the mountain ahead of time to make sure the events will still be going on. Some demos require a pre-registration that morning so please take note of that. Remember bring your drivers license and a credit card to demo!!! I’ll go by Mountain to make it easier to check out: Aspen Highlands December 13, 2008: Venture Snowboards Venture Snowboards out of Silverton Colorado visits with this years line up of boards for you to try for free.
A couple weeks ago when I heard about the Shop Demo coming up at Loveland…I knew I’d want to be there to try out as many boards and bindings as possible. So I made sure to get my name on the list and got the days off work. It was the best two days of demoing boards, having fun and snowboarding when I should have been working. I got up early Wednesday to make the drive down to Loveland. It was just me coming from Steamboat so I got to crank the tunes and rock out. Unfortunately we had freezing rain the night before…so the roads were slick and the drive took a bit longer than I wanted. I made it to Loveland around 9am to check in and get ready for a day of demos. I had originally made a list of boards/bindings I should try…but I completely forgot the list and had to go off memory. With every board I took 3 runs, mostly 2 runs on chair #1. Chair #1 is a shorter chair but I like the cat track for buttering and the wall for pretending it’s a pipe wall plus a couple nice kickers on […]

The plan was to ride Copper today with friends…but at the last minute decided to hit up Loveland instead. Later in the day I received a text from my friend Steve about the lines at Copper while I texted him back that Loveland had zero lines and great riding. Today was the first day my truck was full for the drive. I made the trek down with Amy, Aaron and Jacob. I made my way to the Santa Cruz tent to try out their boards for the day, Patrick was running the tent and doing a solid job of helping me pick out boards to try. Surprisingly I’ve owned one Santa Cruz back in the day and loved it…it was a solid board that I learned to progress with in snowboarding so it was great to be back on Santa Cruz Snowboards again. It was another great day at Loveland. It was colder in the morning and a bit windy but by mid-morning it was sunny bluebird with barely any winds. Conditions were hard packed, softened up during the day and then in afternoon some icy spots came out. It’s always good to recognize fellow snowboard.com members on the mountain.
Even though I’m sick with a sore throat and about to lose my voice…I made my way down to Loveland to ride for a demo day! Demo days always get me stoked and happy…cause I can ride other boards and compare them to mine. Plus it’s just fun. It was just me today from Steamboat…no one else wanted to make the trek unless there was new snow. Sometimes you just have to ride alone so I made sure I stopped by my work before taking off to grab my ipod nano so I had some company while riding. As soon as I arrived, made my way to the demo tents to check out what companies were there. Even though I went alone, I made some runs with cool people and got some nice lift talk going with fellow snowboarders from the area. Finally got one run with Gag’s the NS rep and later found myself on the chairlift with Cameron who works with Rossignol. Cameron and I have a mutual friend in common, Chad Frost…so that was fun making turns with him and talking. Today started out as a bluebird Loveland day and by afternoon, clouds started to roll in. […]
