It’s harder to find the smaller snowboard companies for demos so when they do get on a mountain tour, it’s a good thing to check them out. Ellis Snowboards is starting to make their way around Colorado offering up demos, giveaways and more. Here’s the information for their Colorado demo tour and what mountains they’ll be hitting up near you. The first one starts at Winter Park this weekend!
The 08-09 season just winded down with a greatseason ending at Windell’s Camp for their last session. It’s been an amazing year of snowboarding and I’m really thankful that I can ride as much as I do and write about it. I’m in the final stretch for another year of 12 months a year of snowboarding. If I hit September then I have rode at least once a month for the last year (my second time doing this). In just 19 days the snowmaking will begin here in Colorado, bringing the winter season one step closer. Until then there are plenty of snowboard films/premieres to distract me and possibly the chance to start the shred season early on a snow patch. This was the second summer of Industry Profile Interviews and each person I get involved/each interview that comes back I am always stoked to see how they come out. The season comes to an end later this month, so I’m wrangling up the last interviews to be completed and I hope you enjoy the stories of these amazing people. I’m also working on Summer 2010 Industry Profiles so if you have a recommendation or someone you know who might […]

In my constantly moving chatbox, Pierce asked “how do you meet all these people I would love to be as involved in the snowboard community as you are.” The snowboard industry is small, seriously smaller than you can imagine. If you know one person, chances are through them you know, or can potentially know, a lot more people. It just takes an introduction or communication to establish a relationship. When I did Industry Profiles last summer, a lot of people spoke about the snowboard industry saying that “it’s not what you know, but who you know.” Six degrees of separation says you are only six steps away from everyone, in snowboarding I think it’s more like three steps…just gotta get out and make the step. The most noticeable thing for how I’ve met people is networking. There are lots of words for it: make contacts, meet and greet, schmooze, mingle. My friend Bruce once told me I was really good at networking because I stay connected to people, constantly in contact and a hub of information. Really it comes down to making connections. I’ve found that anyone I email, I will try to meet in person especially when it comes […]

Well last night was a late night, stayed up partying and went to bed around 2am. This morning was a little rough but after some coffee I was awake and hanging in there. Here’s the video for day 3 of demos, today was just trying out a couple boards and having fun with friends while riding them. Rocky Mountain On-Snow 2009 Demo Day 3 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. I spent the first couple runs with Dan and Jay who were able to get away from the Lib tent. It was becoming a beautiful day, still cold but at least the sun was out and fun to ride the mountain with. My early morning was spent on the Park Pickle which was requested a couple times and glad I finally got on it because it was good. Real men wear pink pants K and myself taking a break Boards I rode today were: -GNU Park Pickle with Union Forces -GNU B-pro with Union Forces -Rossignol Angus with Union Forces -O-matic Extr-eco with Union Forces -Flow Era with NXT-AT’s -Rome Pusher with Rome United’s and Rome Madisons We ended the day on a high note, enjoying a cold beer in the sun.
While the rest of the condo had to get up to set up the demo tent, I got a extra little bit of sleep in the morning before I made my way out to the demos on day 2. Here’s the video for the day, with my friends in the park and getting some demos set up. Rocky Mountain On-Snow 2009 Demo Day 2 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. Day 2 brought out the cold weather on hardpacked groomers with winds. It was overcast with flat light most of the day.We had a crew of friends riding together and demo’ing which was great since it helped you forget the cold easier. Our crew was Tj, K, Adrian, Lauren and myself. Gags and Tj showing off their facemasks on the cold days MTNOPS came out for the demo. Mark Sullivan made the trek from Idaho to bring down some boards and I managed to take two of them out. Pete from Unity setting me up. Mark who does the Flow Blog (Flog) was on hand today at the demos so we got a shot together, bloggers unite!
Well I made it out to Keystone for the on-snow industry demo’s. Each year after SIA is the on-snow demo giving the industry a chance to ride the products that we checked out at SIA. This year I made a video as I was at the demo, from riding to checking out the gear to getting the boards from the reps. Here’s what it looks like. Rocky Mountain On-Snow 2009 Demo Day 1 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. The day started out really beautiful which never happens at this demo, typically it’s snowing and bitterly cold. Soon enough to weather changed to the latter but the morning was beautiful.I spent my day taking out boards. Here’s what I rode today: -Capita Indoor Survival FK with Union Trilogy -Arbor Coda with Union Force -Lib Tech Dark C2 with Union Force -O-matic Extr-eco (regular camber) with Drake Super Sport -O-matic Sweet with Technine Nines -Bataleon Enemy with Union Force -Ride Crush with Women’s Contrabands Me with the Arbor Coda Normally I ride demo days alone but this year I spent the day riding with Zac (Hybrid Sessions), K and TJ. Ending the day at Ride Day 2 is quickly approaching and I’ve […]

Each year after SIA, there are industry on-snow demo’s for the next year’s products. Not every company is there, but a good amount of them participate in the demos. February 10-12th at Keystone, I get the opportunity to attend and check it out the 09-10 snowboards. I’ll be spending 3 days on snow to demo boards, bindings, boots, goggles and whatever else is there. So this is where the readers come in, I want to hear from you on what gear you want me to ride and review. I’d also like input on how long you think I should ride each board and review. Typically during these demo’s it’s 3 same runs with each board, giving about 8 boards per day (sometimes more, sometimes less). Do you think that is a fair amount, would you like to see more runs with less boards? Or continue with the same 3 runs? I won’t go below 3 runs, because that’s not fair to the boards and by the 3rd run I have a good idea of the board, enough for me to feel confident about talking about it. Please remember that I am an average rider, I spend the majority of my […]

I came down to Keystone friday night to hang out with friends at a condo for the weekend. I enjoyed the condo a lot more than them since I was feeling under the weather last week. It finally caught up to me that I needed to take a day off from work and riding. I feel a lot better now and am glad I’ll be flying to Vegas without being sick. Today I was determined to hit the snow before I headed to Denver. We hit up the mountain in the early morning and was able to hit up the end of the Burton Demo Tour stop. I spent a couple runs on the Vapor, finally! Supposedly it was Keir’s vapor (had the frends sticker) so thanks Keir for giving it back so I could ride it. It definitely didn’t make me ride like Keir so bummer. I’ll be up the Vapor review soon, maybe tonight if I have internet access definitely by tomorrow. I didn’t do a good pairing job with the bindings, the lexas were a bit too soft for the vapor riding. I will say this…the board isn’t worth the price. I understand the […]

I left Steamboat Springs this morning with the snow guns cranking away to make the lower mountain and base area covered with snow. Steamboat opens on the 26th so really looking forward to being able to ride my home mountain. Today at Loveland was the Christy Sports Demo. Also this weekend, Copper has demos going on so if you are in Colorado and want to try new gear…this is the weekend! The Christy Sports demo was very busy, lots of people trying out gear to decide what to buy. I came down alone for the day but was able to ride a couple more boards. Boards I rode today: Lib Skate Banana, Lib Dark Series, Salomon Official, Burton Women’s Supermodel, Burton Feelgood, and Rossignol One Mag. The One Mag is way too wide for me but I figured I had the chance to try it on icy spots for a reader and one run was interesting with my size 8 boots on it. I didn’t try any new bindings today, used my tigre’s most of the day except when riding Burton then I used escapades.Even with driving down alone and riding alone, met up with a couple old faces and […]

Today was day two of the demos at Loveland and in typical form it was snowing throughout the day. I arrived early and spent the day from one tent to another trying out boards. Conditions were better than yesterday, it wasn’t as cold and windy but it was still cold and windy. The snow conditions were better, less icy spots and some powder turns to be made. Loveland was prepping for Chair #2 to be open tomorrow and coverage looks a lot better after the recent snowfall. The powder wasn’t much but it was a good area to try out the boards in for the float factor. I found some goods but also found a buried log in the process causing me to do a nice tumble and roll in the powder. Gary and I on the chairlift I was able to demo Smith Heiress goggles for the day with gold sensor mirror lenses and I was impressed, good fit with my face and in the conditions today I had good visibility and no fogging. I checked them out in the AM while waiting for first run with Gags and I didn’t return them till 3pm.Made laps with a couple people […]
