When it came time to figure out where I wanted to spend my 30th birthday, it was an easy decision. I opted for a dirty thirty celebration in the actual dirt at Whistler Bike Park for a couple days to ring in the big day. It offered a chance to ride terrain I had accomplished previously and master new terrain when I reached the ripe age of 30. We arrived into Whistler on Monday June 10, ready to start the celebration at our condo. Since it was the big 30, I wanted something close to the lifts/bars and a spot where everyone had a bed. Our condo in the Carleton Lodge was sweet and I could check out the progress on the Bike Park Crankworx features from the balcony. Last year I had bought my first legit downhill bike, the Norco Aurum but unfortunately I didn’t want to deal with bringing it on the plane so thank to Whistler Mountain I was able to demo the Giant Glory bikes during my stay. Reunited with my Whistler Bike Park buddy Carrie for laps in the afternoon. She talked me into doing the GLC roll where i hit butt to tire and […]

It was a long winter in Colorado so when it kept snowing in May, I realized I needed to get out into some warm heat and sunshine. Moab, Utah offered up the camping, hiking, biking and heat without traveling too far to get it. Plus it was a far enough, it seemed like a mini vacation on its own. We loaded up the truck with our bikes and arrived late on Friday to find a camping spot. It was just us girls (Rachel and myself) for the first night before other friends (Laura, Nick and family) arrived for Saturday night. As night set in, we got to see the canyon walls lit up around us (still not sure what that was about) which was pretty cool! On Saturday we loaded up the bikes and headed just north of town to ride some easier trails with my dog. I had brought my downhill bike so it was a struggle getting up some of the hills but I made it.I was really proud of Capitadog for staying with us during the ride and leading the way. Really looking forward to spending more time on the bike this summer enjoying bike parks in […]

I remember the moment when I told myself downhill mountain biking was not for me. I was standing in the base of Whistler Village many summers ago as I watched the mountain bikers walking by with monstrous expensive bikes, full face helmets and padding covered in dirt. I could see the features, the drops and the berms from the base that they were riding. I was floored. I realized that that downhill mountain biking was gnarly and I could never be that gnarly. Despite living in towns that had lift accessed mountain biking, I never got into it. I always had the opportunity to ride snow in the summer and didn’t want to give that up. But it wasn’t until last summer at Mammoth that I realized there was no way I could snowboard that summer so I needed to give mountain biking a chance. I started on the easiest green trail (seriously, families could pass by me) where I started to get comfortable on the $600 used full-suspension Giant Reign I bought. I eventually stepped it up to the easy blues and harder blues. I went from sitting on the seat to learning to ride downhill properly, standing with […]

Yesterday was about kicking off winter with the Keystone Rail Jam but today was about finishing off the Bike Park closing day. I was pretty amped to get on the dirt, ride the trails and start to familarize myself with the Bike Park at Keystone. It felt great to finally be riding my new Norco Aurum that took me all summer to pay off but now it’s finally mine! I started out on the easy trails, green and blues to get myself comfortable. Girl Scouts, Suz’s Cruise, Eye of the Tiger, Mosquito Coast, Boy Scouts, Bluegrass, River Run Trail, Easy Street were the warm-up laps. After feeling a bit more confident and talking with a couple other riders about the harder trails, I decided that I just needed to do it. So I dropped into Cowboy Up, launched the first drop and kept riding through. I only got off to walk half of the rock garden before riding onto TNT and punk rock to Loggers Lane to Boy Scouts to River Run Trail. The vibes today were great. I met a couple people riding, shared the trail map when I had to figure out the next trail and had some […]

After spending Tuesday in the Bike Park with the bumps and bends clinic, today was about getting back on the same trails and motivating myself to continue to conquer them while working on my riding. Conditions were dry and sunny but the breeze up and down on the ride were perfect for mountain biking. I started out on Live Wire, then headed over to Gypsy for a couple laps and ended the day on easier Coaster and Easy Rider to get back to my truck. Gypsy has been a good trail for me. Super hard, heart pounding with technical rocks and really fun rideable features like rocks to bridges, rock stairs, crazy rock drops, barrels to rocks. Basically imagine a lot of rocks from small to big, sharp to dull on one run. I’ve managed to ride every feature in place except this one below. There’s something about the rocks in place especially the smaller ones that can move on you. I’ll have to redeem myself someday but thankfully I walked around it whenever I encountered it. I was having a great run on Gypsy until right before the wall ride, I was coming in to hit it and felt […]

When the Stevens Pass Bike Park opened late last summer, I was living out of state but still stoked to hear my home mountain opened lift accessed downhill trails. Since moving back to Washington earlier this winter, I’ve been anxiously awaiting for the snow to melt since Stevens closed for winter operations and today was finally the day for the Bike Park to open! Props to the hardworking Stevens team and crew to get it up and running despite the abundance of snow this season. It was an easy drive up Hwy 2 to get in some lift accessed riding this morning. Once I hit the unloaded my bike and got my ticket, I followed the clearly marked signs to get to the lift. Riding a new Bike Park is a good thing, it definitely pushes your riding to ride different dirt, trails and timing. I knew there were two trails open so I figured I would stick to the blue Rock Crusher (more difficult) trail for the day to get used to the design of the Bike Park here. I usually never push my luck on the first day of wherever I’m riding because I’d rather have my first […]

The last day of my Whistler trip finally arrived. Cue the sad sappy music. On a good note, the sun was shining, the lines were short and the trails offered up a more loose ride for the day. Today was a day to ride by myself, fast lap with the singles line and work on what I learned from the women’s bike clinic last night. There is a photo of me riding through Heart of Darkness when I took the first jump (it was my air of the day but I got air), click here to see it with a lot of watermarking covering it. I went back to lower Duffman trail to redeem myself on the sketchy rock part that I crashed on two days ago. Redemption was won. The best part about today was trying out the Norco Aurum from Fanatik Co in town. They mentioned taking out the demo bike yesterday at the shop so today was the day. I had tried a couple bikes this summer but hadn’t found one that completely won me over. The best part is they sell their demo bikes with brand new parts at the end of the season so you […]

For the past month, I’ve been progressing in the Bike Park. Sometimes it’s been baby steps, sometimes huge leaps. I’m still moving forward, gaining confidence (and losing it on some days) but I’m always having fun. This trip to Whistler was based around coming up just in time to experience the Whistler women’s night clinics to help my progression along with coaching. A little coaching can go a long way and it seemed like it was time to work on specific skills in the right environment. Today started in the local bike shop, Fanatik Co., to purchase new grips and a handlebar. It was cheaper than a new bike and should be a short-term fix for one of the issues I’ve been having on my current setup. [singlepic id=14213 w=500 h=375 float=] After getting set up, I got in a couple laps to get used to the wider handlebar. It was a less progressive day than yesterday, I enjoyed the runs without feeling like I needed to prove myself or get wrecked. I had heard so many good things about Whistler creating a clinic that helped women take their skills to the next level. For less than $20 with your […]

It felt really good to return to the promised land of bikes and boards aka Whistler to be able to work on my Bike Park progression. I’ve been missing the carefree environment, friendly atmosphere and all-around fun that goes on in resort towns so it’s been my main mission to return as much as possible. I scheduled this trip around the Monday night ladies night so I could partake in it with three days of downhill time in the Bike Park. Sunday was my only day to ride with my friend Carrie so we hit up the mountain, warmed up on the trails we knew and then immediately she pushed me to try the GLC ramp. Because anytime you hit a new feature, thinking about it all day is going to be a mental mindfuck. We ended up doing it twice, I had one stall coming up to it the second time but still managed to do it. With more terrain open, we ended up trying new trails on the mountain. It was my first time to check out a couple trails that I wanna work my way up to (same with Carrie). One of them has the first feature […]

It was a relief to see the sunshine come out after yesterday’s wet and muddy riding day. It meant the trails would be a bit drier, easier to grip and just as much fun. I headed back to the Whistler Bike Park to get in my laps and work on technique. Since I learned to mountain bike last summer, I didn’t ride with more experienced people till this summer so now I’m starting to get the tips and techniques coming my way. It’s much needed to be able to fine tune my riding as I’m progressing. My coach/riding buddy for most of today was Dan. As much as I love riding with the girls, sometimes you gotta have a boy riding behind you yelling at you to fix this and fix that so you actually do it. It was good to have Dan helping me work on riding berms and jumps. While I was working on technique most of the day, other riders were preparing for the Wednesday night downhill race that was going to take place on B-Line to Heart of Darkness. Dan was riding the trails with me so he’d be ready for the race as well. I […]
