Drake has been known for their bindings but behind the bindings lies a snowboard company with boards built in the GST factory in Austria. Their boards were stamped with the Drake name in 09-10 and they are bringing back their signature line for 10-11. Drake has added a few reverse cambers to their line with a new reverse camber name, the Drake smiley but still offer a majority of camber snowboards. The smiley concept offers a reverse free camber shape creating a constant arch from tip to tail which come 6mm raised compared to a regular snowboard. Other new technology is gumwalls where they inject 1mm of shock-absorbent rubber between 2-layers of ABS plates and over the boards sidewalls to provide dampening and protect. A new shape the Omega model shape improves the overall control of the board by keeping the full contact length but shrinking the actual board size. On the freestyle models, the jibbing boards come straight from the factory with a pre-detuned edges on the tip and tail. Drake DF1 Features: All-terrain, freestyle high performance for the advanced riders who’s looking for perfect control and enhanced playfulness all at the same time. Directional twin shape, radial sidecut, […]

Location: Whistler, BC Snow Conditions: Bluebird to overcast on hardpacked snow, choppy snow and ice in spots. Setup: I rode the Drake DF1 with Union Forces and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: Camber is like coming home…it won’t die and the DF1 proved that for me. Size: 155cm Weight: average Flex: The DF1 was on the stiffer flex side for a freestyle board, but that made it stable at higher speeds and still great outside of the park for freeriding. It was a tad stiffer in the tail and torsionally stiff between the bindings. Turning: It took me some personal adjustment to turning on a camber board again, just getting used to initiating and driving the board through the turn. The DF1 has a radial sidecut so once one edge, it is very predictable and won’t force you into some extreme turn you weren’t expecting. I rode the DF1 after the Bataleon and even though the carves weren’t quite like TBT (nothing is) it still handled carving and held an edge. Stable: I didn’t encounter any stability issues with the DF1, handled speeds and choppy snow very well, good dampening in the board to absorb any rougher terrain. […]

Location: Whistler, BC Snow Conditions: Bluebird with hardpacked ice in the morning and slush in the afternoon. The DF2 was the 3rd board of the day so the snow was getting softer and less ice on the mountain. Setup: I rode the Drake DF2 with Union Forces and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: Not bad, not bad at all Size: 156cm Weight: lighter than average Flex: I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first stepped on it, but the U camber was pretty easy to flex the nose and tail of the board with the center of the board having a bit more stiffness to it. The stiffness underfoot made also allowed for good stability when I ollied off a roller and when I was just freeriding down the runs. Turning: The best part about the DF2 was it was a really easy ride to adapt to, easy to transition into each turn and a good mix of flex torsionally and longitudinally so it rode well when freeriding, never felt like a park board that couldn’t handle the rest of the mountain. When you wanted to really rally the board on edge, it gave that performance back to […]

2008-2009 Drake Player Location: Keystone, Colorado Snow Conditions: Cold with hardpacked groomers and some choppy terrain. Setup: I rode the Drake Player with Drake Muse bindings and my Vans Omni Focus boots. First Impression: It is a snowboard that’s predictable. You don’t have to worry about naked people coming out of the closet with this board. Size: 156cmWeight: Noticeably heavier Flex: I thought it was stiffer for a all mountain freestyle board mostly longitudinally, torsionally it had some give to it but definitely a slower edge to edge without a softer torsional flex.Turning: The player is classified as a mid level board which I definitely agree on, I’d even say more entry to mid level seeing that it was very forgiving on edge without putting you in too much of a carve right away and it was gradually increasing with the transitional sidecut. Overall was very forgiving of a ride. Stable: I found the player to be quite stable for a more all mountain freestyle board. I had no problems with it when riding faster on the runs and going through choppier terrain. Pop: I didn’t test the pop on the player by doing any ollies or other freestyle riding […]
