Earlier this week I watched as friends from Tahoe came down to enjoy the recent snowfall with a jib sesh and came back totally stoked on the snow. I didn’t make it out with them but realized today I should head to the snow before it melts. You can call today Shay’s-unsuccessful-jib-sesh. I put out some calls but in the end, it was myself with my dog to check it out and make an afternoon of it. During our morning hike we saw a corrogated tube right next to the snow which I thought would be a great way to start the jib sesh by setting it up and having a go at it. I ended up eating shit every single time I hit it…definitely the best falls to start off the season. I should have known to just find a log that would be easier to ride off of and not have to ollie onto…but I figured I’d try. It hurt but I had fun doing it. The good news was no one was around to watch and I did not take video of it, haha!
With the Colorado shred season underway now that two mountains are open, it’s definitely the time of the year that my free days are spent on the mountain. Saturday was the perfect day to drive down from Steamboat with friends for an afternoon of shredding. We had a minor glitch in the plans when we realized Philip left his snowboard pants at home, but a phone call to friends in summit county solved that. Made a small detour to borrow snowboard pants from Joey, huge thanks! The best part of driving to Loveland was seeing the K2 Van pull up next to us on the highway and waving to JP the rep, its time to see all the CO shredders once again. [singlepic id=6486 w=400 h=300 float=] We didn’t roll up to Loveland until 11:30am but from the highway we saw that there was still parking and no lift lines (yes on a Saturday). It was really mellow and laid back for the day. Teddy from Omatic was grilling up in the parking lot and we got wind of how long the lines were at A-basin. It’s why I would rather pay to ride Loveland than use my season pass […]

Well I hope everyone had a great dinner last night, I know my fridge is packed full of leftovers so I’ll be enjoying turkey sandwiches all week. Yesterday I heard that Copper’s superpipe would be open today and planned to wake up early to drive down to Copper. I woke up and found that it has snowed outside here in Steamboat Springs which made me re-think driving down, so I slept in and then went riding here. Met up with the skier girls (Michelle, Steph, Tamra) to hit the mini park and get back on the rails. The early season park has been busy! I used to ride rails back in Washington and I never really got into them, I really suck at them to be honest…so this year I am trying to get back onto rails and better myself to be a better all-around rider (rails, pipe, freeride, whatever). With the limited amount of terrain open and really nothing else to push me, today was a mini park day in Steamboat. Here is me going back to basics…50/50ing a mini rainbow box More 50/50 action on the longer box rail Here’s a shot of Steph I took We kept […]

Amy and I drove down to ride Copper today. It turned out to be a busy day on the slopes but a beautiful day out with demos to choose from. Every ride up the chair, I checked out the mound of snow soon to be Copper’s halfpipe. Copper usually has the first halfpipe in the United States and I really like riding halfpipe. The base area was packed with demo tents giving skiers and riders a chance to try out new gear. Reverse Cambers were very popular and constantly out on the mountain. The lines were long and the runs open were pretty packed at Copper today. It’s good riding another mountain but riding Copper in the early season always is not as fun as the other mountains. The main reason is the safety people to control the speed of skiers and riders coming down in a populated run. I understand it completely, but at the same time…I should see fairness. I typically see the ski racers flying down the run without being yelled at and I’m being waved to slow down. Or better yet, I should have pulled out the camera to record the safety person who was […]

Saturday night I attended the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) benefit in Breckenridge which was great, I’ll have more on the benefit later. A couple of us crashed in Frisco so we could ride today. After dealing with the long lines and mess of people yesterday, I was looking forward to Loveland today. For those not familiar, the reason the other mountains are so busy is they share the same pass. Loveland doesn’t share a pass with anyone and is totally worth it to not deal with crowds. Thanks to Duncan and John who make it so the magical riding happens. The other reason I was looking forward to Loveland is Never Summer was demoing today there. I really got my start just going to demo’s and getting to know the people turning the screws and now I enjoy being able to see them and catch up. Gags turning screws at the demo He just added Sales Manager to his title for Never Summer…much deserved to a hardworking man. A good collection of boards in a variety of sizes from Never Summer to demo. The rules of the demo…no rabid ferrets in the tent please.
The morning started out at A-Basin where I met up with Becky and Bru to ride for the day. We expected that A-Basin would be less crowded than the openings of Breck and Keystone. It is a bummer that Vail Resorts only allowed their employees to ride at A-basin when Breck and Keystone were open. However we were wrong, it was very busy and with the 2nd chair not open yet by 10am…lines were bad on the 1st chair. Becky and Bru riding down A-Basin After one run on the lower half (not even second chair open yet), waiting in line for a good 45 minutes we decided to head over to Keystone to see what was up there. Keystone is less than 10 minutes from A-Basin to easy quick drive over and find parking. We walked to the new Gondola in River Run and as we came around the corner, we had to laugh at how long the line was for the gondola. Here’s us at the end of the line, it went around the corner to the right in front of the gondola.
This morning we turned the clocks back one hour which always makes it interesting when you plan to meet your friends in the morning. Luckily we managed to all meet with the time changing and get on the road to hit up Loveland for the day. I carpooled down with Amy, John and Jakub. There was another car of friends from Steamboat and we parked next to Steamboat guys as well so everyone joined up when it was BBQ in the parking lot time. John got a shot of me riding. I spent the day riding my Evo-R and Raiden Tigre bindings. John and Amy. John brought out his new NS Titan to bomb with.I gave Amy the Infinity-R to ride for the day and she sported my Union Contact bindings. I was told she would never give it back…she liked it them that much. The morning was spent just lapping runs as the sun shined on us, caught up with Bru and Joel who I know from the sierra forums. We rode a couple laps and then called it time to BBQ. On the way down ran into more sierra people, the more the merrier […]

I stayed true to my word last night that I wouldn’t choose drinking over riding. Halloween was a fun time here in Steamboat Springs with friends but I made sure to get the cab ride home at midnight so today I’d spend it on the mountain instead of hungover and tired from partying. Unfortunately I was the only one of my friends from Steamboat to follow that plan. Luckily Jay was up for the day of shredding and made sure to bring up Lib/GNU boards to ride. Loveland now has 2 chairlifts open, offering up 5 trails. In the morning the clouds were out, bringing overcast and flat light conditions. By late morning, the sun started to show through and then early afternoon, the clouds were back. I expected the day after Halloween to not be busy, but there were people on the mountain and no lines all day. With Jay there I was spending more time on 3 snowboards during the day, TRS, B-Pro and Lando. Jay and myself on the chairlift. I was rocking the Bula hat today and tried out the Giro goggles in the AM with the lens for the snow conditions. […]

We were planning to ride A-Basin today but with such a beautiful day and less people at Loveland yesterday, we ended up back at Loveland. It was a definitely busier today but still more ride time than lift line time. The view of Loveland surrounding people strapping in. The lift lines weren’t too bad Spent the morning making laps down the two open runs on the mountain. For a while it was a mine field…I guess the beginners decided today was a perfect day to learn. I really wish people would take at least a lesson on how to turn and stop before going out to the masses on the hill. Bru coming down the run. I met Bru through sierrasnowboard.com and finally got the chance to ride with him. Around lunch time I got a call from a friend who was in the parking lot. My friends Amy, John and Jakub had drove down and saw my truck a couple rows ahead. We took a break from riding to head down, meet up with them and enjoy their fine BBQ in the parking lot skills. Best beer and burger ever! The easy choice was Loveland; no lines and 2 runs are now open offering up more terrain. I picked up Tom and we met up with Jay at Loveland. Jay was kind enough to borrow some Libs for the weekend…so I could get time in on them and give you guys feedback liked you asked. The boards today were the 157 TRS BTX, 160 Phoenix Lando BTX and 152 GNU B-Pro BTX. The Travis Rice I skipped out on riding today so another time for that board. Jay and Tom walking up to no lines at 9:30am Even with the winds, it was sunny out for the majority of the day. It had snowed in the week so conditions have improved with a mixture of man-made and natural snow. The runs are filling in and the mountain shows less rocks on the un-opened terrain. I’m pretty good at remembering how a board rides especially when it’s a couple in the same day with different sizes and flex…a […]
