It’s the second day of the Burton demo tour, so today meant an early start to make the most of the mountain with the early groomed conditions. The crowds have died down from the holidays so most of the day wasn’t too busy in the Chair 6 lift line. My camera battery died early in the day so most of the photos were taken on my iphone. The demo tent kept busy most of the day and each time there was a line to be able to get the next board/binding to try out. I ended up riding the Burton Nug with Scribe bindings, Burton Whammy Bar with Prophet bindings and Burton Lipstick with Stilletto bindings.

It’s a good time of year when the Burton demo tour rolls into town. It means getting on the snow to try out a bunch of gear in three days. Today was busy in the tents as the masses came up to try out the 2012 gear and get a feel for what Burton offers. It was an interesting day to demo on the icy, hardpacked snow and get a good feel for the board handling. While in line for demos, I heard from the girl working the tent that Burton wouldn’t blame the riders for impact from the bad conditions, so that’s a plus. I ended up trying out three setups for the day: Burton Feelgood Flying V with Diode bindings, Burton Aftermath with Malavita Restricted EST bindings and the Burton Fortress with Burton Escapade bindings. Halfway through the day I ran into my old co-worker Delaney to take a couple laps together and got a couple shots of him riding in the parks. A bunch of features are missing from the easier Forest Trail park so you only have a jump line and a couple boxes to play on. Looking forward to demoing more boards this weekend and […]

It feels good to be out on the mountain. Sunny slushy turns that make you happy even if you are just riding by yourself for a bit. I headed out to help on chair #3 again, shadowing for the afternoon and getting in an occasional turn or three while doing it. [singlepic id=11999 w=300 h=533 float=] I had talked with Sean earlier this winter about trying out a DWD board and we finally got it to work out, he shipped out the board last week and I got it just in time for late season riding. It has quite an interesting graphic on it but I really like it, haha. [singlepic id=11998 w=500 h=281 float=] Forest Trail Park is still up and running but you have to take into account the super slow dirt coverage and wax your board more often.

The mountain is in amazing condition for the end of June. We finally got the heat wave and sunny skies but it’s a reminder of how quickly the snow melts when it finally does switch to summer. I headed out to the slopes to help with chair #3 operations, it’s been fun to be a liftie some days of the week since I can get laps in during my shadowing time. I ended up taking out the Flow Infinity 159 for reviews, each board is getting a couple days of ride time before the season ends. The 159cm is on the longer size range than what I’d normally ride right now but it’s treated me good for hauling and stability on the mountain. I watched Daniel hit the big spring jump and snapped this shot of him. I ended up watching Pat Reddy stomp a backside 10 double cork from the bottom of the chair! He had been working on it all day and was almost landing it, finally it came together and he perfected it at the end of the day.

It’s June 15 and I’m still walking out on the snow to go snowboarding. That’s pretty rad considering most resorts have closed for the season or aren’t open daily. Last summer I was riding Timberline and now I’m at Mammoth enjoying the summer conditions. But it’s also a reminder that the season will end on July 4 and when it does, instead of seeking year round snow…I’ll be taking a break to get into mountain biking and enjoy a late summer. Snow conditions were perfect when we headed out, the pipe was softening up and most of the snow was soft but not slushy yet. It was good turns on the mountain. I took out the Flow Quantum for the day. The guys at Flow were kind enough to leave a board bag of 2012 boards for me to try out this month and I’m stoked to be able to ride a ton of Flow boards for review. Dan took this photo of me freeriding down from the park to Chair #1 on the Quantum. I took it through the pipe and Forest Trail parks today, just playing on the jump line with it. It’ll be tested out more days […]

It’s officially my 28th birthday! For the second time in my life, I spent the day snowboarding. Luckily for me, my birthday was good because of one person. He spent the time on the mountain with me, bought me lunch and coffee, brought home a cake and decorated it and then took me to a movie. Because of him, I had a great birthday. The mountain portion was just another day, more turns and I would have liked it to be better, but it is what it is. It was fun seeing the snake run start to evolve below chair #1 in the snow. Everyone takes the same turns and builds up the course better and better each day. Crazy how fast it grows and how much fun it is!

When it comes to snowboarding for Mammoth Mountain, I will always offer my services. Mostly because it’s fun to get out on the hill and get to help out when they need snowboarders to film for uplinks and videos. This morning, we were getting footage of our amazing spring conditions to send out. I headed up with filmer Amanda and PR Dan to be the models on the mountain. The first laps were just fun, warming up while Amanda shot scenic stuff. The parks were in good shape but still firm this morning. By 10am they soften up a bit with the warmer temps now. Today I was riding the 2012 YES Big City. JJ Jose asked for a review on twitter so I got in touch with Chad at YES to see if there was a possibility to borrow the board for review this month. The board arrived last week and will get a review. Since we ended up getting footage for the uplinks, Amanda let me have the footage so here’s a video of us cruising the groomers in the morning. This winter I’ve spent time playing in Forest Trail park just having fun on the line of […]

There are days when you show up to the mountain and everything syncs up for you: front row parking, no lines, no one hitting the features in front of you and just jamming along. As much as today seemed like that with the front row parking and no one on the mountain, it was deceiving for good reason. The park was empty and we had it to ourselves but it was empty because the snow was sooo sticky and slow with the new heavy snow we got that you couldn’t make a feature (let alone a jump) unless you hauled and skipped past 3 in front of it. After a couple runs through Forest Trail and Main Park realizing that riding was not going to be anything outstanding meant the perfect time to hit a new feature that was easy to hit. The concrete feature has been buried in Main Park, totally doable for barely ollie’ing onto and I just wanted to try it since I hadn’t yet. Of course the skier tried to haul it to the jump line but found out that even if you tucked today, you weren’t making it over the lip with any speed.
Finally the sun came out in Mammoth! I was out on the mountain early to help with lift shadowing so got a couple runs in before I headed to chair #2 for the morning. The snow was still bulletproof at 8:30am and only the racers were out enjoying the conditions. I took a lap through Forest where everything was rock hard and not forgiving but you had the park to yourself. Flow was kind enough to drop off boards for me to review this month so I took out the Flow Verve 155 for the day. It’s seen some hard to soft conditions and was able to take it through the park a bunch. When my shadow shift ended, I met up with the skier for a couple laps through the softened up park and got this shot of him on the C rail.

The weather wasn’t supposed to be cooperating for Saturday but it didn’t matter one bit. The mix of clouds and slight rain drops didn’t impact the fun that was had. I left the skier at home (ankle injury) and headed up to the mountain to see who was around. It worked out that after a couple laps by myself, I ran into Eric and Lucien from Flow Snowboards who were up product testing for the weekend. Later on Michelle joined up with us for some laps. The mountain conditions have been insanely good. I have to remind myself that it’s mid-May and the conditions are just as good as mid-winter on the mountain. Yesterday I swung by P3 board shop in town to drop off the 2012 Never Summer Proto so they could have it as a demo board and Trotter let me borrow the 2012 Lib Tech Trice so I could try it out. This has been that one board that is always requested but I’ve been hesitant to try it because it’s a mid-wide but it’s definitely not the first wider board I’ve ridden so finally caved in to trying it out. After a couple warm up runs […]
