I grew up in Bellingham, WA, splitting time between soccer and sneaking away from practice to go snowboarding. After graduating from High School, packed my bags and went to CWU in Ellensburg, WA. Spent a couple years doing the college party thing and figured out living in the middle of nowhere was not the life for me, headed back to Bellingham and went to college on and off for years, interned at K2 snowboards and eventually graduating from WWU in 2005 with a Marketing Degree. Originally hired back in March 2005 to be the Marketing Coordinator for frequency: The Snowboarders Journal and now am the Director of Marketing and Advertising for Funny Feelings LLC, publishers of frequency: The Snowboarders Journal, The Flyfish Journal and The Ski Journal.
Frequency fits a different mold than your average snowboard magazine; the quarterly publication is focused on high quality and limited advertising which is rare in snowboarding. Founded in 2001, Frequency: The Snowboarders Journal has grown to become a popular magazine for snowboarders wanting more than a throwaway magazine and the editorial/photography speaks for itself when published in a coffee table style journal. Located in Bellingham, Washington the office houses Frequency: The Snowboarders Journal, Ski Journal and Flyfish Journal. The new location that they are now housed in is more remote than their previous downtown Bellingham location but also offers a quiet workspace environment and you’d never guess such a quality magazine is in this location. [singlepic id=8900 w=267 h=401 float=] Upon entering the Frequency office, Jamie Lynn greets you at the door in the portrait done by Matt French. [singlepic id=8905 w=267 h=401 float=] The waiting area stocked with copies of Frequency, Ski Journal and the new Flyfish Journal await people for some leisure time before a big meeting. [singlepic id=8896 w=400 h=267 float=] In 2006, Frequency won the Maggie Award for Best Quarterly which is proudly on display in the office. The Maggie Awards honors editorial and publishing […]

Brah, dude, that’s really RAD! Have you ever encountered a rad moment but caught it on camera? Here’s your chance to win a contest designed around you. To start off the New Year, the crew over at Frequency magazine are stepping up to their first contest designed around being rad whether it’s snowboarding or just crazy weird action moments that surround you. Being rad of the month might even get you in the mag! What’s at stake? Just some Northwest loving from the fine folks at Frequency & Mervin Manufacturing (Lib, GNU) if you win rad of the month, you’ll get some some softgoods to keep you dressed rad this winter. To post up your rad or see examples, head to the Frequency fan page and check out their Rad of the Month Photo Album I can’t wait to see some of the submissions to this contest, because being rad is in all of us and winning free gear is always fun!

Just in time for the holidays, two Washington homegrown companies have collaborated to bring together a hat for loving support. Frequency the snowboarders journal and Spacecraft have created a limited run of beanies that are available when you purchase a new, gift or resubscribe a frequency subscription and put in the promo code shayboarder. The beanie is free when you subscribe or re-subscribe and helps support two amazing companies. If you aren’t familiar with Frequency Magazine, it’s the coffee style quality magazine that comes out four times a year and since it offers quality content over advertising, so there’s less flipping and more reading. Spacecraft continues to grow their urban art designs from the mountains to your home with their apparel and designs. These two Washington companies bring out some of the best most original work in snowboarding and I gotta say, these beanies aren’t bad.

Valuable content is where it’s at during these rough times in the economy. Relying on advertisements to fill content is going to disappear and being low man on the totem pole will give you a bigger lead than before. That’s certainly the case for Frequency where their quality content gives them the upper hand and when there is more content than advertisements, it’s something worthy of keeping around. [singlepic id=4588 w=400 h=300 float=] Issue 7.2 “As the sun breaks, the wildflowers blow and slush pits signify the changing of seasons, frequency TSJ welcomes the first signs of summer with the release of our latest: Issue #7.2. While spots like Whistler, Mammoth and Hood are still enjoying the rad, the season is just ramping up in South America. And that’s where frequency TSJ Issue #7.2 takes you, dropping in on Bariloche, Argentina for a two-week binge session of snow, discos, and more carne than you can consume. Back in the spotlight, Gretchen Bleiler sits with John Laing to discuss not only her contest exploits, but also her recent move to backcountry riding, where she continues to push snowboarding forward. As well, Natalie Langmann takes us to another remote locale: Haida […]

I received my Frequency in the mail right before my flight to Seattle, packed it in my carry-on, read it on the flight and took it on a journey. Since then I’ve read it, re-read it. It got buried in my truck below a pile of catalogs and moved around until I found it earlier this week realizing I missed writing about it. [singlepic id=7342 w=320 h=214 float=] Issue 7.1 “Where did snowboarding originate? Issue 7.1 reopens the debate with a feature by Jackson Hole’s Jeremy Jones who discovered a village in Turkey where they have been riding for four hundred years. Canadian icon Devun Walsh speaks on pushing snowboarding from the early 90s until now. British photographer Richard Baybutt chronicles his ill-equipped moto trip from England to the Alps in search of a bit more than powder turns. Colin Wiseman looks at the development of two small Canadian towns and their big mountains: Revelstoke and Golden, BC. Lastly, Vermont prodigy Kevin Pearce talks about going from the biggest contests in the world to filming in Alaska in his interview. From dirtbag couch surfs to Pemberton’s point break and the schoolyards of Alaska, frequency TSJ’s 21st release is dropping now.” […]

I was having a really bad day where I just wanted to go home and crawl in bed. I was frustrated from work and starting to realize that it might be time to move on. On my way home, I checked my mail and found Frequency waiting for me. Instead of crawling under the covers, I lied down on my bed and flipped open the magazine. By the time I read cover to cover, I had relaxed and immersed myself in the world of snowboarding. I’m being honest when I say that the magazine made me feel better and I find it incredible that a magazine can do that.Issue 6.4 “Frequency: TSJ’s third annual PhotoBook brings a new perspective to snowboarding. A collectible anthology of images from backcountry British Columbia to Stratton, VT, and the housing projects of Romania, photographers Evan Chandler-Soanes, Mark Gallup, Lorenz Holder, Jess Mooney, and Jake Stangel used everything from small format digital cameras to large format film rigs to bring you snowboarding from their unique angles. Whether it’s portraits of Trouble in Squamish, storm days in Stowe, or cat-accessed BC pow turns, this PhotoBook pushes the boundaries of snowboard photography.
