After I viewed the 2012/2013 winter outerwear line-up at SIA in January, I had to select what gear I would be rocking this season. It was a tough choice merely because I had absolutely no idea where I would be spending the 2012/2013 season at the time. In case I was in the Northwest, I needed enough waterproofing and in case I was back in Colorado, I needed enough warmth. I ended up picking two jackets that met both criteria and kept with my go-to pants for all-around riding. 686 Smarty Satellite Jacket The Satellite jacket is built for warmth on the mountain which is perfect for night riding or cold days in Colorado. Fully taped outershell jacket seams with an 100g infi-loft polyquilted smarty vest. I figured with this jacket/vest, I could rock the jacket, the vest or both on the mountain. 686 Plexus Storm Jacket A good jacket for the snowy days on the slopes, the Storm is just like the name. Good waterproofing with 20,000mm/15,000gm with all the tech features you want from 686. Plus I love blue, the color was really what sold me on the jacket. 686 Smarty Original Cargo Pant My go-to pant is […]

My first taste of the backcountry was years ago when a friend took me out on a borrowed splitboard and backcountry gear to “earn my turns.” It was tough with lots of sweat but it was also a blast and it felt amazing to ride terrain I hadn’t dreamed of. Since then I’ve slowly been acquiring the gear needed to make the full backcountry collection. The first year, I bought the collaspible ski poles, then the next year the shovel and probe and finally got the beacon as a Christmas present (thanks family). The splitboard and bindings were harder to come by so I borrowed them and this year, I am happy to finally round out the collection with my own gear. Of course being in the backcountry requires education and I’m already reaching out to get my hands on the books and the classes so I can be safer in the outdoors this winter. I’m looking forward to skipping the Christmas lines and making my own lines out of the resort, especially the sidecountry at June and exploring some more scenic areas around the area. K2 Panoramic Splitboard What can I say, I’m a fan of bambooyah so definitely […]

Typically I wear one set of outerwear each year but this season, I’m able to try out multiple brands on the slopes. After meeting with Oakley at SIA last season, I got in touch with them to see about goggles and ended up with a whole kit from head to toe for the season. I really liked the Oakley Pro Rider Series and the ease of an outfit designed together so I found my tastes were similar to Eero’s setup. For eyewear, I only knew I wanted to try the Airbreak goggles after a reader requested them and ended up with Shaun’s style for the eyewear. The combination is interesting but it’s always fun trying both out on the mountain and getting them ready for future reviews. Oakley Airbreak Goggles New this year is the Airbreak goggle, making it easier to switch lenses so you adapt to the varying conditions with good vision. I received the Airbreak goggle in the Shaun White signature series design, same thing with a name and new graphic on it. It comes with two lenses so you have an assortment ready for mountain conditions and never have to worry about being blind on the mountain. […]

Usually I know exactly what outerwear I want the second I see it at the SIA Tradeshow but 686 was hard to choose from this year. They really do a good job of making designs for every style of rider. But there were so many options to consider: going bright, going snaggletooth or just going back to the basics with technical features. In the end, I went with my two favorite colors: blue and black to round out my 686 outerwear for this season. This season I’ll get to rock this kit with a few others coming down out of the woodwork. 686 Plexus Hydra Jacket Fully taped seams. 20,000mm/15,000gm. That’s what I like to hear when it comes to a snowboard jacket. This year I went with the 686 Plexus Hydra jacket after loving last year’s Plexus Sonar softshell jacket. I wanted something that was lighter, less bulky than last years and still in my always favorite blue color. There are also a good amount of pockets in this jacket, something I craved more from last year’s jacket. 686 Smarty Original Cargo Pant My go-to pant is the original cargo pant from 686. It works, it’s comfortable, it fits […]

When you live in the mountains, dealing with snow becomes everyday life. Often before the plows or shovels come out, you are wading around in deep snow to get to your vehicle, to get to work and to get around town. When I first moved to the mountains years ago, I bought a pair of Sorels that withstood the deep stuff and kept my feet warm. This year, it was time to upgrade my boots so I donated the old ones and got two new pairs of snow boots to make this winter warmer and easier. [singlepic id=12530 w=500 h=222 float=] Sorel Women’s Tofino Canvas (seen on left) I picked up this boots during the first storm of the year in October from McCoy Sports in Mammoth Lakes with my employee discount. I wanted to replace my old Sorels with a new updated look and went for the fun bright canvas color in red/black. Per my co-workers, I bought the snug size after being told they would pack out. Since then I’ve been wearing them around town, breaking them in with slightly thin socks. These will be my main snow boots to get to the mountain, dig my truck out […]

Usually when you flip through a magazine you might check out a couple ads but the latest Columbia omni-tech advertisements featuring naked people holding up the omni jackets in the winter definitely stop you in your tracks. Omni-heat claims to be 20% warmer than the ordinary lining by breathing and regulating temperatures so you don’t get overheated. When Columbia got in touch with me about being about to test and review the omni-heat, it was an easy decision…just send it over. Luckily for me when the jacket arrived, I got to try out a puffy perfect for cold powder day jacket. Columbia Men’s Powder Bowl Parka featuring omni-heat [singlepic id=10301 w=500 h=281 float=] For the last couple months I’ve been rocking the jacket in the morning with just a t-shirt underneath on the cold chilly days and playing in the snow with. It’s my warmest jacket in the collection and so far the omni heat has treated me great in the cold weather. It also keeps me dry when it starts raining like this morning.

It’s no surprise that I love snowboard gear but what I really love is outerwear. Luckily each year I get to try out more and more brands of outerwear, the first of which is 686 which I’ll be wearing this season. This rider driven outerwear brand mixes it up with technical collections that range from the fun and quirky to collaborations to downright simple designs built for riders. I caught onto 686 years ago and all it took was one jacket that lasted to know I found a brand I liked. This year was tough when it came to selecting what I’d like from 686. I liked a lot of pieces so it was difficult figuring out which one to finally select. Eventually I went with two jackets (one crazy, one solid) and bright pants. One of the jackets is the softshell which I fell in love with last season in the Kr3W jacket, I liked that it suited the mountain without being overly warm for me. 686 Plexus Sonar Softshell Jacket 686 Smarty Original Cargo Pants [singlepic id=10131 w=400 h=497 float=] 686 Snaggletooth Jr Jacket 686 Smarty 2.5 Complete Ply Pants (from last year) [singlepic id=10130 w=400 h=517 float=] […]
