Location: Mission Ridge, WA Snow Conditions: Softpacked to fresh snow on groomers. Setup: I rode the GNU B-Pro with Union Trilogy bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 155 First Impression: There’s good reason why this is the longest running women’s pro model board but seriously the 2013 graphics are AMAZING. Weight: Average. Flex: The B-Pro is on the higher end of a medium flex for women. It’s definitely built for mountain handling with a stiffer flex and the camber zones but the banana tech between the feet gives it good torsional ease and engagement edge to edge. The B-Pro features C2 BTX technology which is banana rocker between the bindings and camber from the inserts to the contact points. It offers the playfulness of rocker but with the stability of camber. Turning: Probably one of the best features of the B-Pro is the turning handling. Even if you want to take it easy on this board, you certainly can. It’s easy to engage into turns but without being too aggressive. It’s smooth handling to get each turn and then lets you play with the turn you’d like. You can go higher on edge to engage into short quick […]

GNU snowboards are handbuilt in the US by snowboarders with jobs and designed for snowboarders who rip pow, parks and pipes. For 2013, GNU continues to offer men’s and women’s snowboards featuring a variety of technology from straight up BTX for park riders to C2 for freeriders and EC2 for those wanting something more. For 2013, asymmetry is more frequent in the GNU line-up with a couple models getting different heel and toe sidecuts on the boards. Backcountry riders can choose between the men’s Riders Choice splitboard and the women’s B-Pro splitboard. GNU Impossible More technology than any board in history! The Impossible perfectly balances nature’s asymmetry allowing complete freestyle freedom. Features twin asym sym sync freestyle shape and geometries, EC2 BTX elliptical banana camber combo, MTX, magnesium fiber, asym columbian gold eco core, bio beans topsheet, glow in the dark sidewalls, sintered base, flex=5.5-7 depending on size. Setup: I rode the GNU Ladies Choice with GNU B-Free bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 151.5cm. First Impression: Offering up the whole mountain on a platter and giving you a deck that can handle whatever you give it. Weight: Average. Flex: The Ladies Choice is a good medium flex range snowboard for women. It’s a stiffer flex underfoot to help with stability on landings with a softer torsional flex between the bindings. Overall it’s a mid range for flex, it’s not a soft board by any means and it’s not a stiff board. It’s right in the middle which is perfect for handling everything from park to mountain freeriding. The Ladies Choice features a C2 BTX technology which is banana rocker between the bindings and camber from the inserts to the contact points. Turning: Easy to initiate into turns, making it a bit more forgiving of a ride than I expected. But once into turns, you had total control of the aggressiveness of the handling into each turn. The board was quick and responsive for shorter quicker turns and could still ride […]

Easy in, easy out – that’s the motto behind GNU when it comes to developing snowboard bindings. Over the past couple years GNU has entered into the backdoor of binding design with bindings that are very simple and straightfoward. Make it easier to get into and get out of. All the dirty connotations set aside, GNU offers a range of bindings for a ability levels. All of GNU’s bindings offer a reclining highback design and some models feature auto open straps so that when you flip down the highback, the ankle strap magically opens making it easier to get out of. For dampening, GNU bindings has TPU shock pads, base buffer and a full EVA footbed to make the ride more enjoyable. GNU Choice High performance all mountain and park riding binding. The Choices’ features give you ergonomic support with asymmetric highback and strap components for increased power and control. Features FT-3 asymmetric highback with lateral adjust, micro adjust forward lean, asymmetric inverse seam construction ankle straps, premium denim and synthetic leather strap materials, triple dampening: full EVA footbed, TPU shock pads and base buffer. Flex-8. Setup: I rode the GNU Riders Choice with my Union bastardized bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 154.5cm. First Impression: C2BTX does the Riders Choice good. Weight: tad heavier than average. Flex: The Riders Choice is meant to be a stiffer board that handles aggressive freestyle lines and landings. It’s stiffer both torsionally and longidinally but with a good amount of pop. Despite the torsional stiffness it wasn’t hard to get quick response from edge to edge and the overall stiffness made it perfect in the powder. It felt comfortable from the beginning. The Riders Choice features C2BTX which is banana rocker between the bindings and camber from the inserts to the contact points. Turning: The last time I rode the Riders Choice in 08-09 the mtx was too grippy but that wasn’t the case with this board, it turned on a dime easily and held an edge without being too aggressive into the carve. On the hardpacked spots, it was natural just to ride without thinking about it, no catching and no overally grippy feeling. Shorter turns were easy to get […]

Under the Mervin Manufacturing umbrella, GNU Snowboards are handbuilt in the US by snowboarders and ride the parks, pipes and pow by snowboarders. GNU continues to bring environmental practices to their snowboards with their bioplastic topsheets, sustainable woodcores, on-site recycling and 100% vegan. For 10-11, C2BTX is added to two new boards in the line up with the Altered Genetics and Riders Choice and the Danny Kass and Billy Goat continue to offer it. For women, you can find C2BTX in the B-pro. New for men is the dirty pillow BTX, a twin pow terrain banana for fun float in the pow. New for women is the women’s park pickle designed to give women a asym ride down the mountain. I came home with a couple shots of GNU at SIA, but in the tightly cramped space I didn’t get every board so here’s the catalog images for each board and specs. Remember these might be changing by the time they hit production.
Location: Loveland, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy conditions on the mountain. Setup: I rode the GNU Street Series with my Force SL bindings and Bonfire Geo boots. Size: 154cm. First Impression: Definitely a jib stick that I’d keep in the park, I wasn’t sure it there was magne traction on the board either. Weight: average Flex: The Street Series is a softer flexing snowboard, softer between the bindings and a tad stiffer nose and tail which makes up for the board in pop. I was a bit surprised by the flex since I thought it’d be more of a noodle but it wasn’t and the flex made it a lot of fun in the park and more playful. Turning: It was really quick edge to edge on sharper short radius turns which was fun and easy to ride and maneuever down the mountain but when I took it into a full carve uphill to see how it held on edge, it kicked out of the carve midway up. The long radius turns just weren’t as stable on edge but I didn’t mind the shorter turns on the Street Series. Stable: I honestly was surprised this board had magne traction […]
