When it goes to magazine reviews, the Good Wood test is the most popular and longest running snowboard test. The Good Wood Test was designed to give the best performing park and all-mountain boards the chance to standout among the rest of the boards. For 2013, boards are split between men and women, over and under $450 in all mountain and park categories. TWS made a point of explaining the testing, how a board is scored and who the testers are. I’ve ridden over ten of the boards that made the list for this year. Standout boards for men’s all-mountain were the Capita BSOD, Lib T.Rice, TRS and Greats. For men’s park, the Salomonder and Ultrafear were favorites when I rode them in years past. For the women’s results, I completely agree with all of the all-mountain boards and can see how the other boards won for park. The best way to interpret this list is see what works for you and try it for yourself…your own personal test matters more than anything else. Top Ten Men’s Boards Under $449 Burton Super Hero (park) Burton Parkitect (park) Salomon Sabotage (park) Capita Ultrafear FK (park) Capita Defenders of Awesome (park) K2 […]

In the grand scheme of snowboard tests, the Transworld Snowboarding Good Wood test is the longest running and the most well known test that defines a list of boards to consider each season. I’ve tagged along with the Good Wood Test a couple times to see how they test each snowboard and got to see the Mammoth GW Test in action last spring. Here’s the list of what boards made the cut for this season and my thoughts on the list. For 2012, boards are split between men and women, over and under $400 and all mountain and park categories. When I first started hearing of the boards that won, I was happy to see which boards got recognized. I think it’s a list most like my own taste for reviewed boards from this year and past reviews. For the men, the Stepchild Powder Sucks, GNU Park Pickle/Riders Choice, Lib Tech Attack Banana, TRS and Box Scratcher have always rated high in reviews and been boards that are very popular with riders. For the women, the Arbor Swoon, GNU B-Pro, Roxy Eminence, Smokin Vixen, Arbor Cadence were all boards that offered up great choices for the female riders depending on […]

Shay: So tell us about yourself? Reid: I’m 26. I grew up on the East coast with some pretty cool parents who used our local hill as a babysitter when I was a kid. I moved to Colorado in 2001 to go to college at the University of Colorado and met some amazing people who opened lots of doors for me there. When I graduated in 2005 I moved to Utah for “one last full season of riding” before I had planned on applying to grad school. Three and a half years later and I still haven’t applied. me. [singlepic id=4548 w=300 h=400 float=] Shay: What is your job title? Reid: I am a snowboard coach and the adaptive program head for the Park City Snowboard Team. Shay: Did your parents question your job choice? Reid: Not at all. My parents have always been very supportive of my lifestyle and I am extremely lucky to have them. I actually think my mom and dad are the first people to defend me when other people question my job choice. Shay: What was your first set up? Reid: I’m not really sure I can even remember.
For the past 11 years, the Transworld Good Wood Test has set the standard for snowboarding board tests, consistently offering riders a glimpse into popular boards for the next season. While no test is perfect, the Good Wood has worked each year to dial it in and make improvements to the testing format. There have been many debates on if the Good Wood Test is legit and represents a true test of snowboards. I set out to find out the truth. In September, I talked with Annie Fast over the phone about the Good Wood test and received an invite to come see it done in person at Breckenridge. I accepted knowing that seeing it done is more valuable than being told how it’s done. On Thursday, April 16th I made the trek to Breckenridge to witness the Good Wood Test for 2009-2010 boards as they completed their 4th day of testing boards. The Good Wood Test is a collaboration between HCSC and Transworld to put on the test. [singlepic id=5547 w=400 h=267 float=] Each day the riders have a line up of boards selected for them to ride. This eliminates the last minute stress of finding a board and […]

So when I started hearing some of the winners back in May when the companies found out, I wasn’t surprised by the results. Usually there’s a couple boards in the Good Wood List that I’m surprised by, like how the hell did that board make it to the top of the lists? I don’t always agree on the list. But this year the list to me was actually very predictable. These boards in the 09 Good Wood are some of the most sought after, talked about on forums and popular boards. I’ve rode 9 of the men’s boards and 2 of the women’s boards in this test. Some of the boards haven’t changed construction so they might be older models. Of those 11 models I have rode, they were all fine boards…each suited a purpose, a riding style and something to offer a rider. Personally for me some of the boards in this list, definitely don’t suit me as a rider. I’m not the biggest fan of magne traction or really noodly soft boards but others love them. Even if someone asked me to pick one board that I liked, it would be determined by riding style and conditions. There […]

Each year two snowboard tests come out from respective magazines, Future Snowboarding and Transworld Snowboarding Magazine. These board tests are talked about and people do listen to them. I say with any board test or review, remember the people riding these boards are not you…you might interpret boards differently than a pro rider or test rider. Here’s my take on the list for 2009. I just started hearing about boards that have been placed in the lists this year. So here’s a heads up on the 2008-2009 Transworld Good Wood and Future Snowboarding’s board’s of the Year. The 2009 Good Wood Results List: Top 10 Men’s Boards over $400 1.
